I was a little surprised that EA didn't make all of the positions start out with even points totals.  At first glance I come to the conclusion that there is no reason to make either kind of defenseman and just put a grinder or power forward in front of the goalie to play defense with a human.

The way the online level ups work is you get 3 points to distribute in each of 3 categories (offense, defense, athletic) for a total of 9 points.  The next level up you get 4 each for 12, then I think it progresses 5,6, and finally 7 points.  So if you earn the legend card you can get a total of 25 points across the three categories to distribute (75 total).  So far I have the second level (3 and 4) and every attribute costs one to increase except for speed which costs 2 until 82 and then it costs 3.  I figure that some of the others might cost more as you get higher in them.

More to come....

So why pick either type of defenseman to go online?  I can't make an argument to do so at this time.  You are at least 9 points down to start with (that's one whole level) and you never will make that up in progression.  Maybe they make it up in much higher defensive attributes.  Let's look.

First there are some attributes to throw out because they are either equal across all types or they make little to no difference in the human game and probably should never have points spent upon.

I think there are seven attributes that fall into this category and these include offensive awareness, defensive awareness, endurance, toughness (fighting), durability,   and discipline.

More to come...

Good stuff.  I forgot where I put my 9 points for online play, being so few I doubt it matters much.

The one thing I think EA Canada screwed up was the menus and functionality. It is like these guys paid homage to Seabass and those horrid menus from PES/WE years past. Took me forever to find my invite (why not have it send a PM to your XBL account?)  and with all the modes it is rather intimidating for a newbie.  Please give some explanation of the Be a Pro and how you have an offline/online version of your player.  Seems the logical thing would be to have the edit attributes for online BAP in the Xbox Live area and reference it as such.

Anyway when my big complaint is about the menus and navigation, you have a good game on your hand.  Next time I get points, will get with you to tell me where to spread them out.

The revised total in the table above is the total with the subtraction of the seven categories.  Among the seven categories one falls under offense and three each under defense and athletics.  NHL 09 is obviously slanted towards offense despite the new defensive controls.

Before I go further let me say that I'm not doing this to prove the game is broken or to even complain about the slant.  Personally, I agree with the slant as I can tell after playing in 26 online games that people care more for their goals/assists stats than they do about their win record and plus/minus.  And that's OK.  I would think that most people do have more fun in 5-4 shootouts than in 2-1 defensive battles.

The point of all this is to hopefully provide some insight into what kind of skater to create and which ones to avoid.  I would say that if you know you will always play defense and never play another position it would be all right to create a defenseman.  However, the likelihood of that is nil so it is best to use a defensive type of checking forward in defense when you have to unless you want to redistribute all of your points every time you play another game.

I plan to go a little deeper into each of the player types, but for starters I will say that if you like to play forward and defense or anticipate having to do both it is probably a good idea to start with a power forward or a grinder.  These types of forwards can fit in well on the blue line and all they are really giving up is acceleration and balance ratings over a defensive d-man.  The GR is a better checker and shot blocker than a defensive d-man.  The PF has better puck control which can be crucial in the defensive zone with aggressive forecheckers.

About the only thing the offensive d-man has over the two defensive forwards is shot accuracy, passing, and the deke.  He really is worse on defense than both a grinder and a power forward.  In fact if you want to make an o-d-man you should just create a playmaker instead.  You'll get more offensive bonuses and not lose hardly anything on the defensive side.

The BEAUTIFUL thing about the online BAP is that you can start over at anytime, recreate your BAP without losing any stats and redistribute your points.  Basically you could create a new BAP before every game if you wanted to and not lose anything ever.  So if you decide on what you want to be, just do it and redistribute your points.

Looking more and more at the Dangler it seems almost like this could be a base type for everyone and then you distribute to what you want to become.  The type is the most athletic and defensive deficiencies could be overcome with time.

It seems there is more to some attributes than numerical ratings.  I found that in order to get the hardest possible slap shot power I had to pick the stiffest stick and then also match it to a big guy.  So my guy is 6' 6" and 221 lbs.  That seems to be the minimum size combo for the hardest slap shot.

Whatever you decide to pick make sure you match your equipment (sticks, blade, skates) to the type of player and type of offense you want to play.

I'm pretty confident you lose speed and acceleration with bigger bodies, too..

I think you are right.  I am a power forward now with intentions on playing a lot of defense.  With my lack of finishing ability I think all I can hope for are deflections when I'm a forward and huge slappers that rebound and get assists on the blue line.  Actually, I'm pretty fond of my new guy, Teddy Hammerzeit.
