Analysis from NPD's Anita Frazier:

"The industry experienced its worst year-over-year decline in April since July '09, and the fourth largest year-over-year percentage decline ever after September 2000, June '09 and July '09."

"Some of the decline is explained by the shift of Easter timing. In April '09, consumers attributed $55 million of industry sales to Easter as a purchase occasion, which would account for about 21% of the decline from last year since Easter purchasing happened in March this year."

"Across hardware, software and accessories, the PS3 platform is the only one to have enjoyed growth over last year for both the month of April and year-to-date."

"The portable side of the industry contributed more than its fair share to the industry decline. The portable business across hardware, software and accessories accounted for 25% of total industry dollar sales in April but declines in portable sales compared to April '09 accounted for 61% of the total industry decrease".

Hardware

"The PS3 and the Xbox 360 both enjoyed a unit sales increase over last April while all other systems declined. Compared to March '10 on an average sales per week basis, all platforms declined between 37% and 63%. Inventory at retail could be playing a role in some of the systems' decreases."

"Of the platforms that declined versus year ago, the NDS accounts for 71% of the decline. Keep in mind that the NDS sold over 1 million units last April. Even with the decline, the DS was the best-selling hardware system for the month."

"Among the platforms that increased over last year, the PS3 and the Xbox 360, the PS3 accounted for 84% of the total unit sales increase."

"The NDS is approaching the PS2 as the best-selling hardware system of all time, and by October or November of this year, it should meet or exceed the install base of the PS2."

Software

"A big contributor to the decline in software sales comes from the March '10 new releases, which fell off more dramatically than did last year's March releases. In aggregate, March '09 new releases dropped off by 54% in April '09 sales, while this year, new releases in March '10 dropped off by 75% in April."

"The April software sales were more concentrated among the top-selling games than they were last year and April '10 new releases sold more units than did last April's new releases so it wasn't the top-selling games or the new releases that were at the heart of the software decline. Those compare very favorably to last year."

"The genres we loosely group under the umbrella of "casual" games (Action Oriented Racing, Fitness, Multiple/Other Sports, Music/Dance Games, Party Games, Platform/Scrolling Character) comprised only 24% of software dollar sales in April 2010 as compared to 36% last April, and indication that more core content shored up better than did some of the more casual or non-traditional content."

Accessories

"Of course we know that there is game content sold and revenue generated via digital distribution. As one point of reference in that regard, this is the second consecutive month that the Xbox Live 1600 point game card was the best-selling accessory item for the month."
