Really old demo from an earlier E3. I remember watching the video. Outside of the cutscenes which look great, the in-game gameplay has a few graphical issues. Lots of screen tearing, shimmering and the FPS really takes a hit at high speed. Over at Neogaf they are seeing the same thing and the PC version, if you have the rig, would be the way to go. The mission was fun but I knew exactly what to do, due to the video. Love how the old cars control and the music (not so complete list) but it has Buddy Holly and other legends.
Will wait for the reviews to see if some of the graphical issues get fixed. |

Hey Brent, I thought you were pretty much a solid 'sports-only' gamer? What made this one appealing to you?

I like the sandbox games, but usually for just running around and causing mayhem. Love anything Mob related and I did play the original Mafia on the PC.

I just got around to catching up on Just Cause 2 and that looks perfect for me. Plus it has already dropped to $49.99 so I am going to pick it up today and hold off on Mafia 2 until it goes through all the patches and hopefully a price drop.

Guess I should have read the reviews of Just Cause 2. The game was close to being great, unfortunately a big part of the game was a complete bust. How they came up with the shooting system and lack of cover is beyond me. Outside of headshot it does not credit you for good aiming. Heck, you have one of those auto aim that considers a shot outside of the person a hit. Of course it takes 5 to 10 shots to take down someone, unless you get a headshot. Even then I found it taking a few shots to the head from time to time. Terrible since the was so much to do and the grappling hook provided hours of fun by itself. So the game went to another owner a couple days after purchase.
I only bring this up because I did go out and get Mafia 2 and GTA4 (plus the Episodes from Liberty City disc) to keep me busy until L.A. Noire hits. That is the one I am looking forward to the most. Hopefully it still makes it out this winter but there has been a lack of info on the game. Edit: Just looked and LA Noire has been pushed to Feb 2011. |

What possessed you to buy GTA4? You were busting my chops when I bought it in June.

I never finished it and of course never played the two expansion episodes.

Mafia 2 is really growing on me. It uses a similar cover system that GTA4 uses and the controller config can be changed to copy it for the most part. I actually got goosbumps when I left the bar to go home for the first time back from the war and "Let it snow" by Dean Martin is playing (would have preferred Frank but you take what you can get). You really do have to like a game with a heavy story line and while it is really linear, you can still run around and cause chaos by loading chapters and just messing around instead of worrying about the objectives. That is another nice feature where the 15 of the chapters become available as you complete them. So you can play in the sandbox as young Vito or the later years (on three different difficulty levels).
