I have finally decided to stick to one for now and that will be NHL08. I might get 2K8 after a price drop, hockey games tend to drop in price quicker than most sports games.

Purchase on the PC. For sure rental on the PS2 and possibly a purchase there for kicking your butt this winter.
Still loving NHL07 on the PC. 10 bucks and some really great hockey games.

Reviews trickling in
IGN review of NHL 08 (360 version):
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/819/819016p1.html - http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/819/819016p1.html
8.0 Presentation
While it doesn't feel quite like a TV broadcast, there are plenty of
nice touches. The Stanley Cup celebration is excellent and the
inclusion of real AHL players is a plus.
8.5 Graphics
A good animation system, attractive ice, and great crowds make for a game that's pleasing to the eye.
8.5 Sound
The play-by-play hasn't changed all that much since last year, but it
now has a direct correlation to gameplay. The crowd is intelligent and
the sounds on the ice are good.
9.0 Gameplay
The opponent AI is outstanding. This looks and plays like a real NHL
game. It's not perfect, but it's the best AI EA has ever had in a
hockey game.
8.5 Lasting Appeal
The Dynasty Mode is stronger than ever with better trade logic and
pickier free agents. The addition of online leagues and support for
6-player online games is huge.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/819/819015p1.html - http://ps3.ign.com/articles/819/819015p1.html
Now for the bad news PS3 owners. EA once again does you a huge
disservice. With its first NHL title on PS3, EA has really dropped the
ball visually. While the gameplay and feature set is identical to 360,
the framerate is not. And while EA would like to say the PS3 version
runs at 30 frames per second, that's questionable. PlayStation editor
Greg Miller put it best upon first seeing NHL 08 running on PS3: "It
looks like they're playing hockey under a strobe light." You can still
play and enjoy NHL 08 on PS3, but don't you deserve a perfect
framerate? Shouldn't you demand a better-looking game? Write your
Congressman and get EA to pay the PS3 a bit more respect. Nearly a year
into its life, the PS3 should have sports games that run smoothly.

This found this info on the PS2 and PC versions :
NHL 08 on PS2 NHL Producer Blog:
Hi everyone,
Pete Trenouth here, on site at EA's Burnaby Campus, where we're just putting the finishing touches on NHL 08 for the PS2 and PC. I'm a complete hockey nut, so having the opportunity to work on NHL 08 has been a dream come true.
We've put together a really tight game for this year, and I wanted to share the highlights with everyone.
Our focus this year was two fold for Current Gen. First off, we wanted to make our Core Gameplay experience more fun, and secondly, we wanted to keep building on the depth we already have.
Skill Stick
To make our Core Gameplay experience more fun, we decided that we wanted to expand our skill stick from passing in NHL 07, to passing, shooting, body checking, and stick dekes. We wanted to ensure that we were going to nail this, so we started working on it super early.
Shooting: Shooting was where is all started for us. We really wanted to make shooting easy to use, more fun, and more rewarding. With all of the shooting controls on the right analog stick, every kind of shot is right at the point of your thumb.
Want to take a quick snap shot? Flick the Right Analog Stick towards the goalie.
Want to let the booming slapshot go from the point? Flick the Analog Stick back then forwards. Like picking the corner with your wrist shot? Easy! Just move the Analog stick to the left or right then towards the goalie, and you'll be putting it upstairs no problem.
If you're new to NHL, you'll be able to pick it up, and have fun right away. An old vet? You'll love the skill stick dekes and all of the nifty puck handling you can now do.
And for rewarding, wait until you score your first one timer. In the words of one of our playtesters: “I love the way you take your shots, pulling pack on the analog stick and flicking it forward is an awesome way of playing the game.”
Dekes: When skating down the ice, you can now stick handle the entire time, by moving the left Analog stick right or left. Moving it right, will make the puck carrier hold the puck out to the right, and moving it left will move the puck out to the left. It's a great way to try and beat that least Defenseman and get a shot on goal.
Passing: We've also kept passing on the Right Analog stick too, but it's activated by holding down the right shoulder button on the controller. Hold down the right shoulder button, and you'll have directional passing with the Right Analog stick, perfect for threading the pass through to the slot..
Body Checking: Love the open ice hit? Looking for that player skating with his head down? You're going to love using the right analog stick to throw the big hit. It completely changes the way you look for the hit on defense, and feels great. Slamming the Right Analog stick in the direction of the puck carrier, and then watching your defenseman slam the puckcarrier into the boards is one of the best feelings you'll get playing NHL® 08.
AHL Integration
Looking to build on our stable of teams and leagues that we support, we went out and added the entire AHL and all the teams. Want to play your buddy with the Toronto Marlies? Now you can. Feel like playing a season with the Philadelphia Phantoms and making a run for the Calder Cup. Choose our AHL season mode, and set your sights on winning the Calder Cup
Dynasty Improvements:
We also made a few tweaks to our Dynasty mode as well:
Weekly Goals: We added weekly goals, that allow you to improve your team quicker if you meet them. It also makes every game all that more important.
Contract Negotiation feedback: We added our contract negotiation feedback screen to give you (as the GM) an idea of what sort of salary a player is looking for. If you low ball a player too many times, he won't negotiate with you at all, so this tool gives you an idea of what kind of contract to offer.
Fantasy Draft : We heard you! Now when you start a dynasty, you have the option to use the default rosters, or draft every single player on your team using our Fantasy Draft. Think that you can do it better than the GM's? Now's your chance!
Well everyone, I hope I've been able to wet your appetite for NHL® 08…it's a game that is a bunch of fun to play, and that anyone can pick up and enjoy.

Interesting. I hope the controls are configurable. I'd rather have the passing just straight up stick movement with the shoulder button added during shooting.
I hope they made the wingers more aggressive on the forecheck and programmed them to hustled into the corners during all types of play. If you dump and chase in 07 you have to do it one specific way with a soft dump to the opposite corner to give you wingers time to get in there. They just don't hustle enough on default settings. Maybe a sliders would change this, but I don't mess with sliders anymore.
Edit:
Other than that I was really happy with 07 and still play it on PC. The two minor things were that in all the games I played I didn't see one fight or one on ice injury. So that needs to be tweaked maybe.

Even though we've been pretty hard on 2K8, you will find some positive
signs that the developers can build upon for next season. Graphically,
this edition is much prettier than previous entries (the franchise
finally looks like a new-gen hockey game). Also, we really enjoy the
new faceoff mechanics -- and we don't mind the physicality that goes on
there. Lastly, in true 2K fashion, this game comes stacked with
Franchise and online options. Still, from 2K8's tricky new controls to
the number of gameplay hiccups, we simply can't recommend this skater
over EA's for this hockey season.

Man, I can't believe we have three pages of posts about NHL video games! I wonder if they're more popular than the sport they represent?! It sure seems so around here!
(I keed, I keed...)
Video game hockey seems fun, although I know so little about the game, I probably wouldn't have much success. Plus, I really don't have time to learn and follow another sport.

I'm one of those guys that love hockey video games even though I'm not a big fan of the real sport.
After reading Ted's posts about the things the AI in hockey games should do, I sometimes wonder why he enjoys playing against me when I'm pretty sure (actually, I'm positive) that I don't do those things either. Many times, I don't even understand what he's talking about . Ted has taught me a lot about the sport though and his http://www.sportsgamingnation.com/sgnforums/forum_posts.asp?TID=34 - Hockey Primer is a must-read.
There's no other online game that get my blood pumping as much as hockey though. I've screamed out loud many times during my wins and losses against Ted.

Being the contrarian, I picked up NHL 2K8 for PS3 -- loads of offline play for me! Anyway, as some have suggested, the game would have been well served to force users to pick the control scheme and complete the training BEFORE jumping into the game. I did that and was comfortable in All-Star sim settings with a couple of games. Enjoying it a lot, little to no drawback at this point.

Not to my knowledge. I hadn't played EA hockey since 2002, so I didn't know you could do that until I tried the NHL 08 demo.
I am enjoying the controls in 2K8, they just take some getting used to. This year was a tough year for me to make the decision between EA and 2K -- I can't imagine next year will be easier, if both improve even more.

Gamespot apparently wasn't too impressed with the PS2/PC version of the game:
If you've been following EA's sports game releases on older consoles and the PC over the last couple of years, the following sentence should be of absolutely no surprise to you: NHL 08 on the PS2 and PC is a lot like NHL 07. Once again, EA has phoned it in on these versions, adjusting the control scheme a bit, adding minor league management to the dynasty mode, and calling it a day. Apart from that, the game still plays the same lightning-fast and patently unrealistic game of hockey it has since NHL 2005, and unless you're devoid of any current-gen consoles, there's little reason to take the plunge on this year's game.
The most significant change to NHL 08 on the PS2 and PC is the addition of the skill stick, the excellent control feature from the Xbox 360 and PS3 game that lets you deke and shoot using the right analog stick (PC owners can still use keyboard buttons, if that floats your particular brand of boat). Unfortunately, this version of the skill stick isn't all that great. It's certainly an improvement, but it lacks the precision of the stick movements found in the 360 and PS3 versions. Dekes feel a bit stiff, and slap shots are a pain to pull off. Half the time you wind up for the shot, your player won't slap it forward, no matter how hard you push the stick forward to shoot. Wristers, at least, seem to work without a hitch.
There's no arguing that the addition of the skill stick is a nice bonus. It's just that this skill stick isn't dynamic enough to really make a significant difference, especially when you're playing the equivalent of speed hockey. NHL 08 still feels way, way too fast to be remotely realistic. Checking is still too frequent and too heavy, and scoring is only slightly less out of control. Once you get a handle on the stick, you can still average seven or eight goals a game just by hammering slap shots (when they work) and constantly crashing the net up the middle, periodically faking out the goalie with some of your fancy new dekes. Defensive artificial intelligence is weak enough to where you can pretty much do this over and over and guarantee a win on practically every difficulty level--especially when the defense decides to start getting tangled-up opposing players in front of the net in a gigantic bunching formation, making it easy for you to move to the wing and snap one in while the goalie is screened. The ridiculous speed and high-scoring nature of the game make it relatively fun if viewed purely as an arcade hockey game, but it's not really any more or less fun than last year's game, or the year before that, for that matter.
The only other gameplay addition to be found is a goofy "buddy buzz" feature that lets players in two-player team matches tap their sticks on the ice and, as a result, send a quick bit of vibration to their puck-handling friend to let them know they're open. And the PC version doesn't even have this feature--just the PS2 does.
In terms of modes, NHL 08 includes all the same ones from last year, including European elite leagues, tournaments, the free-4-all minigame, and the dynasty mode. Dynasty mode is the only one of these to really get much tweaking. Now the mode includes proper minor league management, which ties into the salary cap. Unfortunately, none of the negotiation aspects of the 360 and PS3 versions' dynasty mode have made it into the PS2 or PC game, and you can basically sign free agents until there are no free agents left. The salary cap doesn't appear on the free agent signing screen, so you won't know if you're over the cap until you go into the contracts menu and take a look. On top of that, the fantasy draft option is totally busted. You can draft up to 40 players, but draft never tells you how much each player costs, and the computer-controlled teams seem oblivious to the cap. So once the draft is over, you start seeing players like Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley sitting on the free agent market because teams couldn't afford them. It's just silly.
Online play is utterly untouched from last year. Head-to-head play, leaderboards, lobbies, it's all there. PC owners can access the EA Sports Online features, like clubs, tournaments, and head-to-head matchmaking, provided they register the game online and figure out how to make the EASO installer work (it doesn't install to the game by default). The online experience is relatively smooth on both platforms, at least.
Beyond these meager distinctions, NHL 08 really just is another coat of paint over the same basic game EA has been releasing for years. Graphics have seen next to no improvement beyond a few improved goalie animations and slightly better player faces, and the audio hasn't changed a lick, right down to the same repetitive commentary from Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson that's been recycled to death at this point. While it's certainly no shock that the PS2 version would get this treatment, since it is an aging platform, the PC version's neglect is both surprising and irritating. There's no reason why EA couldn't port the 360 or PS3 version of the game to the PC at this point, and that it hasn't yet is just kind of disgusting. Either way, neither the PS2 nor PC versions of NHL 08 should be your first, or even second, choice for a hockey game this year.

Well that sounds discouraging. I really wish I could try the full 360 version of 07 to see just how different it was to the PC and PS2 version last year. Oh, and the ps2 and PC versions played identical in 07 and there wasn't anything wrong with that. It's a little hard to imagine what could be so different about the 360 version. And the guy admits that they did add skill stick to 08 ps2 and PC and if you read back to last years review I think they said that the skill stick was the only difference between the next gen and current gen games. So maybe they are a year behind with PC and ps2, so we are getting last year's 360 game which isn't necessarily a bad thing since it will be fresh to those of us without next gen.
As far as phoning it in since 2005....I just don't see it. There was significant gameplay improvements between 06 and 07 on the PS2. I never played 05 so don't know about that and didn't play 06 on the PC.
I can't imagine this game (any version) looking any better on the 360 than it does on PC at 1920x1200 resolution. It's drop dead gorgeous. Everything from the players to the equipment and arenas, to the ice itself is beautiful to look at and watch.
Disappointing about the lack of change in play by play team. Guess I'll keep that turned off again this year.
I'll definitely post comparison the ps2 07 to 08 as well as give impressions. Store says they think tomorrow since they get their shipments on Thursday.

No, you can hold down R2 and pass with the right-analog stick (I think?).

Frustrating. I ordered on 9/20 and amazon is still showing "items shipping soon". The expected delivery date is 10/2 to 10/8. I've never seen it be delayed like this between order and shipped.

They pull that B.S. when you select "Free Shipping". That's why I stopped ordering from them.

I always do the free shipping and this is the first time it has happened, but if this becomes the norm I'll take my business elsewhere.

NHL 08 (XB360) was a blast. I may have to re-think my PS2 purchase if the shooting-stick is as much fun on that version.

Ted,
Can I map the "Pass" button to X and use the right-analog stick for shooting only in 08?

You don't have to map it. That is how it is. You can either pass with x or use R2 on the same controller config.
But you know that the ps2 08 controls are not the same as the ones you played today right?

Yeah, but the all the buttons can be re-mapped in the PS2 version, right?
Here's what I want to do:
Offense:
X = Pass
R1 = Speed Boost
Right-Analog = Shoot
Defense:
X = Switch Player
O = Body Check
Square = Hook/Tie Up
Triangle = Dive/Block
R1 = Speed Burst
If I can setup that layout I'd be happy. Also, can I aim to the player I want to pass to (with the left-analog stick) if I'm using "Quick Pass" (X) or does it automatically pass to the closest player?

You can have any of those controls custom, BUT you lose the shot stick if you customize controls. You only get shot stick with the default hybrid controls.
Passing on "x" is default hybrid and yes you can control the direction of the pass with the left stick. You can also pass using R2 and the stick.
Switching player on defense is "x" by default.
It's taken me 10 games, but I'm 80% comfortable (read don't have to think about what button to press) with the new controls. In fact I'm worse with 07 controls now and am about equal on both games at this point in time.
Putting the sliders back to 07 defaults has really changed my opinion of the game. I went from a "not as good as 07" stance to a "very slightly improved over 07 with the slider adjustments to 07" stance.
Don't feel any pressure to buy it if you want to save for that 360. I'll get some single player use out of it while I wait for my 360.

That sucks. NHL 07 let you completely customize the controls and still keep the passing on the right-analog stick. I still may pick it up though.

Brent,
Can you change the button layout on the 360 version and still use the right-analog stick for shooting?

You can change it to classic which lets you use the buttons and the R-Analog can still handle shooting, dekes and checking if you wish. It is what I use because I like to change players and pass with "A" button.
The buttons can not be remapped so you are stuck with them.
Something like
A - Pass/Change players B & X - Shoot and poke check Y - Body Check
The shoulders and triggers stay the same

I haven't played it, but not because it isn't good. It is more convenient for me to play on the PC so I play 07 there. And I have spent most of this last week flying in FSEconomy with my gaming hours.
08 is a good game, just as good as 07 with the sliders reset to 07. I even did a little slider adjusting *gasp!* last week and was pleased with the way the game looked while playing, but as usual I neutered the CPU so I went back to 07 default sliders for 08. After getting the hang of the shot stick and adjusting to few nuances in 08 I like it a lot. If you dont' get it I'll wait for the $10 price tag on the PC version next summer. Of course by then I'll probably have a 360 as well and if so I'll just get that version.
So, yes NHL 08 is holding up. I'm just not using the PS2 right now, unfortunately.

I'll most likely pick it up if there's a $10 price drop on the PS2 version. Hopefully it'll happen soon.

I'm also thinking of picking up MVP NCAA 07. I played a few games of 06 last night and enjoyed it a lot. If the frame rate is any better in 07, I'll be very happy with it. I'd like to get NHL 08 (on sale), NBA Live 08 (on sale) and MVP NCAA 07.

I like both 08 and 2K8 on PS2;the shot stick on the EA game is a nice addition, but I still think 2K plays the better game.Progressive scan on the 2K game give it a definite edge in graphics.
MVP 07 plays a nice game of baseball, and I didn't experience frame rate issues. The graphics are absolute butt though, and the rosters are now 3 years out of date.

Thanks for the info koebner. The rosters in MVP 07 don't bother me because I don't know any of the players anyway. Glad to hear the framerate/studdering issues seem to be resolved in 07 too.
Isn't Toys R' Us going to have a "Buy 2 get 1 free" soon?
