Great games tonight Ted. I didn't realize until halfway through the 2nd period of the first game that I was using classic controls. I couldn't figure out why my guys weren't shooting when I pushed the analog stick Embarrassed.

DOH!

Well, you certainly figured it out by the second game.  Nice spanking.  I may have to consider replacing my headset.

Lots of fun tonight.  Gonna create a ladder?

It was alot of fun. I'll create a ladder to track our games, but I'd like to do some sort of league too. Have any ideas?

Let's start off with about 12 - 20 games.

Playoffs too or a straight best record wins the championship?  We can always have a single tiebreaker game if necessary.

I'd love to have a best-of-5 playoff series, but it would make the regular season pointless with only two players.

Also, when are you available to play again online?

I am available any night this week.

By best of 5 do you mean a playoff tournament instead of a season...or playoffs tacked on to the season?

I guess the question is do you only want to play with NJ?  Or are you willing to play with other teams like we did in the NCAA Football season?

I think and East-West format would be fun.  If you take NJ I'll take Vancouver, which is the closest team to where I live.  We can play just within our own divisions, a home and away for each.  That would be 16 games total, 8 for NJ and 8 for Vancouver.  If we were close to even at the end of the season we could have a simple single game or best of 3 championship.

How did you like 5 minute periods?  Long enough?  The medium game speed seemed just fine to me.

Also, I joined the ladder so you can post your two victories.

I'm available any night this week too. Let know what nights are better for you. I can also play as late as 10pm during the week since the games are quick.

I was thinking about playoffs tacked onto a season, but would like to do what we did with NCAA Football. Can we work in a home and away series for NJ and Vancouver during the season to extend it a little bit. Hopefully it's close at the end of the season so we can have some type of championship.

5 Minutes periods are fine with me. What's the next option? 6 or 10 minutes?

I actually chose "Slow" as the game speed for our second game. I thought that's what you picked for the first game too. "Medium" is fine with me though.

We could use the new standings site: http://www.sportsgamingnation.com/standings/index.php?conf=1 - http://www.sportsgamingnation.com/standings/index.php?conf=1

It's much easier to use and was made for hockey.

That is interesting, but wouldn't the standings look funny with NJ and Vancouver having 8 games played and all the rest having 2?

5 minutes is fine for me too.  We can stick with slow if you like.

We can always do a home and away with NJ vs VAN.  That would put us up to 18 games, still within your request for 12 to 20.

Let's go with "Medium" speed.

So the schedule would look something like this (played in any order):

Looks right.  It might be easier to do the home and away for each opponent on the same night.  In any order works for me, but I think we should save the big match for the end of the season.

How did I play last night? I tried to play "smart" hockey but don't know if I really did. I tried dumping the puck on offense when I had a slow line on the ice and went for the breakaways when I had a fast line on the ice (Elias & Gionta).

I have no idea if my defense played "real" hockey.

You won both games right?  It looked like a hockey game to me.  If you are adjusting your tactics to which line is on the ice then you are doing  a better job strategically than I am so far.  At this point I'm trying to study your play and find some weaknesses.

I wouldn't worry about if I was playing "real" hockey.  It is a video game and as such a representation.  If there are tactics that work in the game that wouldn't in real life I would definitely still use them and vice versa that if there were tactics that were highly effective in real life, but not in the game I would avoid them.  The dump in 07 was a prime example of the latter and thankfully is a much better tactic in 08.

Edit:  I just had a look over the old tactics and tutorials I wrote on hockey and realized there wasn't anything in there about defense.  Perhaps I should write something up.

Medium speed seems perfect to me.

Are you leaning towards 10-minutes periods now? If so, we may have to limit our games to one a night or we can save the 10-minutes periods for certain games (playoffs, Devils vs Canucks). Let me know what you think.

BTW, I still haven't played an entire offline game yet. The only other time I've played, besides playing against you online, was when I played one period when I first bought the game. I'm hoping to play some offline games tonight though.

I just wanted to give the 10 minutes a try to see how long it lasted (in real time).  I noticed our shots were a little low in all three games.  But we can stick to 5 minutes for the sake of efficiency and getting through the schedule.  I have no problem with it.

No problem. I'm hopelessly hooked on this game. Last night I had to fight the side-effects of Nyquil to squeeze in my first full game against the CPU.

I always watch "The Soup" with my wife on Friday at 10pm and Bill Maher at 11pm. I could always squeeze a game in from 9:30pm - 10pm or 10:30pm - 11pm but I really wanted to try out 10 minutes periods.

How are you looking for tomorrow night? Actually, if I'm not too tired (or asleep) after Bill Maher, would you be able to play at midnight EST? I can't guarantee that I'll make it though.

Ted,

Do you use the shot-stick offline? I was testing it out in the free-for-all mode and really like how intuitive and responsive it is. The reviewer from  http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/sports/nhl08/review.html - Gamespot that said the shot-stick is unresponsive has no idea what he's talking about. It's a shame you can't use custom controls with the shot-stick though.
