Ted and I were discussing a NASCAR 09 racing league and wanted to see who might be interested. We'd like to get at least four players and would like to race 30 minute races at least one a week on all the tracks.

When does that come out?  I am definitely interested, although I suck at racing games in general...

I'm on the fence on getting this one, but I have to admit that a league would increase my interest in buying the game.  I'll let you know as it gets closer to release ...... I'm still considering Grid as well.

NASCAR 09 should be a big improvement over NASCAR 08. This is going to be the first NASCAR game I buy the day it's released.

I like 08, LOL...  That doesn't mean I'm good at it, though.

I haven't followed 09 much at all.  Are there any online league capabilities built in?  I can't remember if a racing game has ever had that kind of thing before...

Good question. I haven't heard anything yet but will keep an eye on the online capabilities.

I'm leaning toward getting this one ahead of Grid.  I won't be purchasing either until June 15 though (next paycheck) ..... I can only afford one game during the first half of the month and my money is set for another game.

If you're still thinking of doing this, I'd be interested provided I can race you.  Ted and I tried to race last year but couldn't because the 360 recognised my game as NASCAR 08 EU, so I'm hoping that with us getting the game in the same week this year we'll be able to race online.

Definitely interested in the league.

Jason, I think Fazeo (from PGR Friday nights) will be getting this game at some point.  Let's pressure him into joining the league ..... I keep giving him peer pressure to join SGN but he keeps ignoring me - maybe if you hound him, he will get his head out of his butt.  He's a good guy and he likes to play sports game (NHL, NCAA, etc.).

Is the league going to allow full individual set-ups and tweaking, or will folks be running with the same type of set-ups?

I guess we'll see what everyone wants to do. I don't usually mess with my car set-ups and would like to see everyone on a level playing field, but I don't mind either way.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of using custom set-ups. It would force me to learn an aspect of the game that I've never used before. Would the guys that are familiar with this be willing to share their setups or help a newbie like myself?

I'd like to allow for custom setups.  I'm no expert, but I have enjoyed tweaking setups in the past with other games like Indycar Series.  I'd be willing to share any success as well.

My personal experience is that the setup that allows you to go fastest isn't always the best.  There is something to be said for a car that is stable and handles predictably.  Clean races score points.

Gamefly shipped Nascar today.  I'll be racing by Monday I'd guess.

If you guys can, give me a day or so notice for when you think a few of you will be on together, and I'll try to rent this from a local store so that I can tag along.  Gamefly just sent me a bunch of other games that I will be keeping for a little while, so I'll go the local rental route if I can to get on the track.

We need to discuss some of the details for the league now that we tested out the online play. Here are some of the things we need to discuss:

  • How many races?
  • Race Length?
  • Wear Factor?
  • Number of AI?
  • AI difficulty?
  • Damage and Flag options?

Regarding the league, I really don't care what rules you want to use.  I'm pretty sure I'll finish last, anyway.  I'm not very good at racing games!  I'll just try to stay to one side of the track, so you guys can all go by me safely...  Smile

  • How many races?  1 at each track.  We can do this with a 22 week firm schedule.  One track per week.
  • Race Length?  15%.  This approximates to a 20 to 30 minute race at most tracks.
  • Wear Factor? 4x.  This will require at least one pit stop and up to 3 with 15% races.
  • Number of AI?  Full field
  • AI difficulty?  Easy, mostly to have them as traffic so blocking could be possible.
  • Damage and Flag options?  Definitely full flags.  I would also like to see us use damage in order to create consequences for aggressive driving *cough*Grambo*coughWink and reward clean racing.
I'm thinking Fridays or Saturdays might be best for the late night start required by some of us.  I can start as late as you guys want since I'm the lone west coaster (I think).

I might be getting pushy here, but this is how it could work as I see it.

We just run through the tracks alphabetically.  22 tracks = 22 races.  We could start on Friday or Saturday, June 27 or 28th.  10 pm Eastern start to show up and practice.  Qualifying starts 10:30 firm with racing immediately following.  Anyone not in the room by the end of qualifying is disqualified.  Race should be over between 11 and 11:30 Eastern.

The game awards you the points for your finish, plus laps led and other things.  Whatever points you earn go on your total for the season.  We run 22 weeks.  As long as two guys show up then it is a league race.  One or none show up the whole weeks is scratched and we move to the next track next week.  No make ups.  Excluding the holiday weekends like July 4, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving, the season will end before Christmas (I think December 13 actually.

Driver with the most points takes the cup.

I think this could work nicely because it is a set schedule so we know when the whole thing ends and we only need 2 for a league race so if guys have to miss some it should be fine.  I imagine all of us will miss some races.  This format also rewards the guy with perseverance to show up for them all.

Are we going to go with performance points or will everyone be required to have an online profile with no boosts?

To add an interesting slant is anyone interested in "loose" team affiliations?  Since the super speedways are going to reward drafting, but 14 car fields or less make it pretty wide open on the track, maybe some of us will want to strike deals with others to become draft buddies or something.

Oh and I'm claiming the #40 Tums car.

Hey now!!!  The only one I hit on purpose was Fazeo!!!  And that is a tradition for me!

I like one race per week as well, but I think we should do it in order of the official Nascar schedule.  15% sounds good, but let's do a wear factor high enough to force two pits - one pit only results in somebody using it during a caution - with two pits, you are increasing the chance that one may have to be done by strategic driving.  Full field, yes.  Easy AI and full flags.  Oh, and bonus points for taking down Ted!

Saturdays are best for me.  Is there a Rolaids car?

Posted By: JasonSGN

I also think we should race one track per week. I don't mind racing at each track once, but I was hoping that we could have 2 races at certain/popular tracks - once at the beginning of the season and one towards the end.

I'd like the races to be a bit longer (20%). That would put the races at 30 to 40 minutes which is still much shorter than an online football game. NASCAR is all about endurance.

I agree with the 4x Wear Factor. Pit Stops are a major part of the racing strategy.

I agree with a full field of AI.

I agree with setting the AI difficulty to Easy. The race should be against the track and other gamers - the AI should only serve as obstacles for us.

I'm not sure about full damage and flags. Accidents do happen and I'd hate to see someone get knocked out of a race in the first lap due to a mistake.

I'd also prefer cars with no performance points. It should be an even playing field for everyone.

I love the "loose team affiliations" idea!!!

I may have come up with a way to handle to scoring on the league web site so that it's easy for everyone to post their points earned.

Fridays work for me, but I'll work around everyone's schedule. I do think we need a set night and time though.

  • How many races? --I'm partial to racing the Nascar Schedule too
  • Race Length? --15% to 20% is fine
  • Wear Factor? --4x
  • Number of AI? --Not totally sold on a full field yet.  AI seems to be more aggressive online than off, and in my very limited play online I saw quite a few CPU caused accidents.
  • AI difficulty? --Easy or Normal
  • Damage and Flag options?--Full damage and flags
  • Night and time of race?--Weeknights are better for me than weekend nights, but I'll try to make whenever.

I'd prefer no performance points and even all using the default 'veteran' car setup, but I'll live if you guys want to tweak away.  I'd also be okay with taking 'real' drivers instead of using custom cars.

The other option would be to run with a 'cap' of performance points.  It might be kinda neat knowing that some of us have advantages on the short tracks, etc.  Have many of you powered way the heck up yet?  If we're low, I can see how running with minor upgrades would be fun for a bit of flavor.

I only have 15, having only completed the one good ole Jeff Gordon leads you to when he's showing you around the place. :)

By the way, I'm digging the game enough to keep it, so I'm officially 'in' for the season.  I may miss more races than I would like, especially if they are run on the weekend, but I'll be around 'til the end.

I'm not all that good, either, so consider me just a bit more of an obstacle than the AI...

I'm setting up the league site to track our points:

http://www.sportsgamingnation.com/leagues/standings.php?conf=7 - NASCAR League

Here's my work-around:

There's a team/driver called "NASCAR" on the site. After each race, everyone will report themselves as the home team defeating "NASCAR" as the away team. Enter the points earned from the race as your score and record the away team score as 0. We'll all show up as having all wins and no losses, but the points (Points For) will keep track of the standings order.

I had fun racing in NASCAR 09 with you guys the other night, I'm looking forward to participating in the NASACR 09 league.

It is too bad about the performance points being carried over to the Live portion of the game, I guess it is similar to how your golfer in the TW 08 gets "performance points" and that carries over to your Live play too.

I wished they would have a host option that would make everyone have the same car/points to make it more equal.

THAT explains a lot!!!!!

The Brits drive on the wrong side of the road ..... they still think the metric system is relevant (although for some reason, they are still infatuated over the mile instead of the kilo), and now this!

Tums spelled backwards is SMUT!

I am fine with 20% race length and actually prefer it.

4x wear sounds good.

I am fine with running the real schedule as long as we announce what the next track is in advance.  If it takes more weeks to run and we go into next year it doesn't bother me at all.

I would like to restate and encourage that we use full flags and damage.  I will concede that on the short tracks and road courses it could be detrimental to fun so maybe we can just do flags on short track and roads and full on speedways and super speedways since there  is more room to maneuver and less traffic.  I think there should be some consequences to fast and loose driving.  Could we maybe give it a trial run on say the first two speedways and/or super speedways?  If it fails miserable then we'll forget the damage.

So are we going with online profiles that are clean with no performance points or are we going with full performance points.  I don't care either way, just think we should level the playing field.

I am also for allowing setups, but if most want to use veteran and not allow it I can go along.

Pretty excited about this one, guys.

Guys,

I wanted to put a caveat out there.  What I have noticed both online and offline is that even though you set the wear to 4x and the game says (for example) 2 pit stops will be required it may not be so.  It should say 2 would be predicted.  Things like the amount of cautions affect it greatly.  I have determined that I actually won a race on a short track with 6 or 7 other humans on Xbox live because I didn't pit (I didn't need to) because we had so many cautions.  Derek, you were in this race and it was the glitchy one that put me in 1st and then we finished under caution.

Now I DO NOT believe we should make a house rule that if it says X pits required that we have to pit that many times.  I'm just warning everyone to watch their fuel and be tactical in their approach.  If it is in your favor to not pit and you don't need to then by all means do what you would do in real life......stay out on the track.

The down side to the off line racing is that the CPU doesn't think for itself.  It will always pit the number of times it is told to, not taking into account how much race is left compared to what they have in the tank.

-------------

Posted By: JasonSGN
Date Posted: 06-19-2008 at 6:27am
I'm glad that the game isn't 100% accurate with the number of pit stops required. That would take some of the skill and strategy out of the game. I ABSOLUTELY AGREE that you should pit as little or as much as you want to - that's part of the strategy.

So what do you guys think.  Do we run the first four at Daytona like the real schedule?  I can see that being boring by the end, but it could also allow us to flesh out the damage setting we have been talking about.

Also, that is 41 races = 41 weeks.  Is that realistic?  Maybe we could eliminate some that would end up falling on our excluded holiday weeks.  So that would take care of one of the early Daytonas......  just thoughts.

Thanks for posting that, Derek.

I'm in, and looking forward to this.

I apologize in advance for my wreckless driving.  It's not because I'm trying to cheat you guys, or because I'm angry about something, but rather I just can't seem to drive safely  in a lane around an oval.  Embarrassed

Still about 35 or 36.

I have another suggestion.  Let's start the season.  Once we race a track we can vote if we want to race there again if it shows up on the schedule.  Simple majority wins.  That way we'll hit every track once and hit the ones we like again.

Thoughts?

I would recommend everyone sign up.  The season is long.  You can come and go as you please and the races will be scheduled in advance.

I like that idea, but the only problem is that we won't know how many total races there will be until we get close to the end of the season. What about everyone listing the tracks they'd like to eliminate now?

Could we have everyone list their best available days and also they days that absolutely do not work so we can start to firm up the schedule.  I'm thinking that maybe we can races run on different nights periodically to accommodate those with tougher schedules.  Remember we start practice at 10 eastern and race at 10:30 eastern until about 11:15.

  • Ted:  Best Friday and Saturday.  Sunday no.  Rest of the week OK.
  • Grambo
  • Derek
  • Jason
  • Fazeo
  • Kevin
  • Seth???

Thanks,

Unless Grambo and Seth (if he wants to play) throws a wrench in it then it looks like Friday should be the primary racing night.  We could always try to schedule some unusual nights to accomodate during the season.  With so many weeks maybe everyone could get to pick a couple of races and have it be on the night of their choosing?  Or am I making this too complicated now.  I have no problem eliminating Saturday and Sunday nights from the mix seeing as they are pretty bad for several.

Wed looks like a good alternate night right now.  (Mon does too, but racing one week on Mon and one on Friday could mean a very long and/or very short time between races)

Web, all of the tracks on the 2008 NASCAR schedule are in the game.

To clear something up for those who are more casual stock car followers, Jason's schedule is the one you're running if points races are all you're interested in.  As Web said, the one he posted has special events (the Budweiser Shootout, the two Gatorade Duels, the Sprint Showdown and the Sprint All-Star Race) which are all either qualifying races for other events or exhibition races.

Derek, are you saying you would prefer Wednesday to Friday?

I'm pretty much available any night if the starting time is 10 EST.  If it is 9, then Wednesday is tough ..... this may change in the fall as I am heading back to college to work on my Masters, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

Oh, and Fazeo, does Ted's spreadsheet remind you of anyone?

While I personally would prefer Wed to Friday (I just have a better chance of missing some Fridays), I wasn't intending on saying that there. :)  I was just saying that based on how the Xs were lining up, Wed (and Mon) were looking to be the next two best days, if we wanted to occasionally mix it up or something.

Friday by far looks like the preferred day.

I'm very sorry you can't join us, Adam. :(  Yeah, I left the special events in, not knowing if we wanted to run a few as special events of our own.  Not necessary at all.

Wednesday certainly works for me.  And the start times are planned to be 10 pm practice with 10:30 quals and races.  That's 5 saying Wednesday is good.  Let's go ahead and make Wednesday race night....first scheduled race is Wednesday June 25 @ Daytona.

Is Grambo as anal and geeked about stuff like I get?

Hey Guys,

What do you think about dropping the AI completely?  After seeing a few funky things during pits under yellow I'm wondering if we should just nix them.  They certainly aren't going to help us, even at the Supers because they are too slow to provide any draft help.

I'm leaning towards dropping them at the moment.

I'm fine either way but found Lowes to be less exciting with only three cars on the track (after Grambo's engine failed). If we decide to race with CPU drivers, we should definitely keep them set to "Easy" as they are much faster and aggressive online.

Yeah, I like the AI cars as well.  Although truthfully I didn't see much of that race last night ...... blown engine after 2 laps in a 67 lap race ..... what a loser!

You may not have been on the track much last night, but I had quite a few good laughs at your expense WinkLOL. I'll never forget the view I had of your car going high and low on turns when I was behind you and how scared I was to pass you LOL.
