Anyone picking up the PS2 version of MLB 06: The Show? I wasn't crazy about last year's game and am really satisfied with MVP 06, but there's a small part of me that wants to buy MLB 06: The Show. If it gets good reviews, I may not be able to help myself .

I'm interested, but I'm definitely going to wait for thoughts from some of the release-day buyers.

This thread at OS has almost guaranteed that I won't buy the game: http://forums.operationsports.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=159206 - http://forums.operationsports.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?t =159206

I hate the fact that the batting style is directly tied to the diffuculty level you play on. I want to be able to use zone hitting on any level (especially Rookie ).

Sorry guys, I played three games the night I got it and posted some thoughts to DSP, but I've been swamped with work and previous engagements ever since.  Hopefully I'll get some more time with it this weekend, as there's a lot to like (and a little to be nervous about)!

MLB 06 The Show is a very good game. I wouldn't say it's better then NCAA Baseball. The graphics are tremendous, but the gameplay isn't as challenging as EA's game. The announcers are very good, but newbie Rex Hudler brings nothing to the commentary. For $39.99, I say it's a good buy...

Welcome to the forum,  BBatts.

What do you think of the hitting model compared to EA?  And is the pitching harder or easier to throw strikes than EA?

Thanks for the impressions.

Thanks for the welcome. The hitting in the MLB game is actually easier then last years game, but I still think EA's has the better model. As for the piching, I'm still not sure how to be effective in the MLB 06 game. I've thrown a few behind the cather, and my control isn't what I would like it to be. EA's piching is better and easier. The big difference between the 2 games is the grahics. MLB 06 has the edge over EA in this category. For some reason, you can't slide in the MLB 06 game, not sure why. Overall edge to the gameplay goes to EA. Bottom line, EA still has the better the game, but it's not by an overwhelming advantage...

I want to like Sony's MLB series but there are too many things that bother me. I hate that the baserunning is either completely automatic or manual. The fielding controls feel sluggish compared to MVP's and I hate having my batting scheme (zone, timing only, etc.) tied directly to the game difficulty (eg. Rookie, Pro or All-Star). If I want to play on rookie mode with zone batting, I should be able to. Finally, almost every fly ball look like to bounces off of home plate first.

You're right about the graphics though, MLB has excellent graphics and animations. The presentation is top-notch too.

BTW, welcome to the forum BBATS.

I actually played a 9-inning game of MLB 2006 (not 06: The Show) and had a pretty good time. I played on Veteran so that I could use zone hitting and won a close game against the Orioles 6-5 (I used the Yankees).

I forgot how much I liked the pitching and saw a good variety of hits at the plate. I still feel a little disconnected from the fielders when set to 'Assist', but find the game is too frustrating on 'Manual'. Also, I need more practice with the baserunning controls (I used manual baserunning).

I still felt that most of the fly balls look liked they bounced off of home plate first, but I was able to look past that after a few innings. Overall, I enjoyed the game more than I expected and may have to play this one a little bit more. At the very least, it's a nice change of pace from MVP 06.

I played another game of MLB 2006 last night and enjoyed it quite a bit again. For those that have 'MLB 06: The Show', how is the fielding compared to last year's game? With assisted fielding, it never feels like you're in complete control of the player and as good as the animations are, they seem to take away some of the player control. Are any of these issues addressed in 06?

I barely played last year's version, Jason, because I simply could not lose as the Yankees.  I got rid of that sucker quick.

Anyway, IIRC, in the new version you do feel like you have (a little) more control than in the old, but still not nearly as much as you do in MVP.

Do you see a big improvement in 'The Show' over last year's game? Also, are you having any problems with lockups or bugs in the game?

Edit: How's the online play? Any lag?

I see a big improvement mainly because the cpu can score this year.

Seriously, I dumped last year's offering very quickly because the AI was absolutely no contest.  It is this year, at least so far.

I have had no lockups, though I have seen that odd play where outfielders don't even try to field a short hop ball.  I'm not sure what is up with that, but since I've altered my approach (Hang back more on those) I haven't seen it again.

I have yet to play it online, though I did pop on to download the current roster set, which was nice!

I played online last night with a buddy.  The game had some lag, to which you could adjust (Swing and release the pitch meter a bit earlier) and hardly any chop or stuttering through the nine innings.  It played well.

One thing that is a little strange, though I think this may have been in last year's game as well, is that when your opponent guesses your location there is no pitch meter...Bam, you go right to the pitch and the pitch will hit the guessed location.

I guess they had to do it that way, since poor performance on the meter could very well make the pitch go to a different location than was guessed, but it feels a bit odd in execution.

I had a blast, though.  Anyone who has it and wants to play online, let me know!

It really does, Ted.  Last year's had all these annoying problems, like loading up games you didn't actually appear in when "sim to next appearance" was pressed, and a dumb difficulty system that started you off on Rookie no matter what and then progressed as your player progressed.  I like that you can play this year's at a fixed difficulty.  I started a career on the PSP version at HOF difficulty, going out for the center fielder spot in the Tigers organization.  I had an anemic spring, hitting only .210 with no power whatsoever and some shameful fielding, but managed to get a contract offer to play AA ball, where I'm tearing it up.

I like the career mode so much, I picked up a used eyetoy for the PS2 version so I can put my face in there.  I really like the idea of doing a career as a starting pitcher and turning the fielding to auto, so I'm really only playing my character.  Just sim to the days where I'm pitching.

If webdanzer is interested, it would give us 5 players. I'd like to have everyone play everyone else 3 times for a total of 12 games. With an odd number of players (5), it would probably be easiest to just have one division with the top 2 teams playing for the World Series.

I can go American or National if we need someone to switch leagues.

I think if I remember preferences of people:

Ted:  Mariners (AL) or Dodgers (NL)
Jason:  Yanks (AL) or ? (NL)
Web:  Yanks (AL) or Phillies (NL)
Kev:  Indians (AL) or ? (NL)
Slumber: ? (AL) or Mets (NL)
G7: ? (AL) or ? (NL)

So I guess it depends on if G7 joins us and what league he likes better.  Both Mariners and Dodgers are weak so it doesn't matter skill wise for me although I'd prefer Mariners.

Should we just have everyone post their team preference by league?

HA!

It all stems from the '86 series.  I wasn't too young to understand that for Boston, is was the stomach punch of all stomach punches, to the benefit of my team.  So I always pulled for the Sox to finally win one.

I'm no Yankee hater though, believe me.

You'll laugh at this - my choice for the NL is probably going to have to be Pittsburgh.  That ballpark is my favorite in all of baseball.  Yeah, I'll lose every game, but I probably would anyway, so I might as well enjoy my surroundings!

Here's the link to the controller cheat sheet: http://www.gamesegment.com/gamecards/cheatsheets/MLB_06_The_Show_PS2.cfm - MLB 06 Gameplay Controls

Thanks for the link!  If all goes well, I'll get mine tomorrow, too!

How do I save my gameplay options and tuning settings? I've made adjustments to these settings, created a profile and saved my profile, but the settings do not stick when I shut off my PS2. I make sure to load my profile as soon as I turn the game back on and my settings are never there.

When I make the changes, the game ask if you want to add the modifications to the option file. I always say 'Yes' but can't find where to save this file. The manual is no help at all. Do I need to create a season to save these settings?

Thanks.

Mine save, but I am in a season, so I'm not sure, Jason.

How are you liking the game so far?

I've only played about 3 games but like what I've seen so far. The presentation is phenomenal and the online play was lag free last night. There are a few online issues though: you can't do mound visits, the R2 button doesn't bring up the manager options and you must hold down the L3 button to chat. These aren't game-breakers though. I'm looking forward to giving the game a good workout tonight. There do seem to be a lot of foul balls hit behind the plate though.

Edit: It seems that you have to create a season for all of the settings to save. What I'm doing now is loading a season (with my settings saved) and exiting out into an exhibition game. It's a little annoying that something as simple as a 'Save Settings' option wasn't built into the game.

I started using the 'Guess Pitch Location' (not the 'Guess Pitch Type') option last night and love it. What's nice is that you still need to time your swing right and place the bat in the correct zone to get solid contact even when you guess correctly and 'Lock on'. By no means do you automatically get a hit when you're locked on and I've missed and made outs on plenty of pitches that I've locked on to.

I use both guess pitch and guess location pretty regularly when I'm playing my solo season games on HOF.  You are definitely penalized for guessing wrong, though, and it's much harder to guess the location out of 8 zones!

How do you guess the location of the center zone?

Every zone counts the center.  So if you guess location at all, you'll always be right if the ball sails down the center of the plate.

On HOF, at least, though, that doesn't happen much...

I haven't played a game of MLB 06 since Friday and I'm going through withdrawal. I know I like a game when I can't get it off my mind at work.

Played 3 games...  Like what I see!  need to practice, though - haven't won yet, and I'm on "rookie!"  Using the Pirates, though, which may explain some things...

I played my first game with 'Auto Baserunning' ON and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It was a fairly low scoring game (3-2) so I didn't really see too much of the auto baserunning in action, but I didn't miss handling the manual baserunning like I thought I would. I'm not a fan of letting the CPU handle things automatically for me, but I may do that with MLB's baserunning this year.

That is correct...it does affect both CPU and Human.  And yes, that is correct..it is weird that it is only appears in the CPU tuning menu.  :)

Hey Chris, welcome to SGN.

Can I assume the same thing with the baserunning aggressiveness slider too?

Well, the baserunner aggressiveness slider does not affect how aggressive you are as a human controlled runner. :) It only affects the CPU stealing, and/or taking extra bases.

I have read many comments about the baserunning controls etc. for this years game.  I generally use the L1 for advance all for most of my base-running.

As soon as contact is made, I hold down L1.  For instance, if you have a runner on 2nd and you hit a ball to the gap, or down the line, I hold down L1.  This sends the batter thru 1st and the runner at second towards third.

The trick is just letting go of the L1 button at the right time, the runner from 2nd will continue home and the batter will stop at 2nd.

I should have specified the human baserunning aggresiveness when using automatic baserunning Embarrassed.

Thanks for the tip - I always tapped L1 repeatedly instead of just holding it down. I'll have to give manual baserunning another shot.
