VERY First Impressions:

The first thing I noticed is that the force feedback with the wheel is MUCH stronger than in the demo (that's a good thing). Also, the wheel didn't automatically center itself when coming out of turns in the demo but it does in the retail version Thumbs%20Up. There's no way I could ever play this game with a controller again.

The graphics look the same as the demo although this doesn't surprise me as the demo was very good looking and the AI drivers seem to be much smarter/tougher in the retail version.

All the drivers are available in the "Race Now" mode (unlike last year) and the sun actually sets at Daytona during the Coca Cola 400.

More to come...

Does the AI seem to be "aware" of you and not try to run through you.  I noticed this was good in the demo, but thought maybe on higher difficulties that they may be more aggressive.

How many laps are the races you are running?  Do you have to pit in the short races?  Can you go online and try a random room and see how the lag is?

Are you going to cry when you lose in this league?Wink

I'm playing on the "Normal" difficulty and the AI seemed aware of my presence and was not overly aggressive. They did a good job of blocking me but didn't ram into me like in 07.

I just ran short races tonight, but you can set the 'Wear Factor' to 1x, 2x, 3x or 4x so that pitting is necessary even on short races. I had the 'Wear Factor' set to 4x and had to pit at least once per race.

I'm using the 'Pro' handling with some of the driving aids on and have been using the 'Chase' and 'Far Chase' cameras (don't see much of a difference between the two this year).

I haven't tried the online racing and don't know if I could deal with randoms tonight. Hopefully someone I know will have the game soon.

So far, this is the NASCAR game I've always wanted: great graphics, great gameplay and highly customizable.

Dream on controller-boy. I'll be racing circles around you with my wheel LOL.

A couple of things I have noticed:

- it looks like online is Pro mode only, but you can adjust damage, etc., so that shouldn't be an issue.
- it also looks like the maximum amount of cars online is 13 or 14, and that is a mixture of human and AI, so no 30 or 40 car fields.  I should have guessed that because there is probably no way that bandwidth would allow for such a massive field.  Still, its too bad.

Also, will the EU version of the game be compatible online with the US version?  I noticed that the EU version is listed as NASCAR 09 EU on the games played menu.

I found this out last night and was a little disappointed too. I still think there's a lot of fun to be had with 14 cars though.

It won't be compatible, no.  It was the first thing I looked for, since it's the issue that stopped me racing with Ted last year - they're recognised as two different games so it's not possible to accept an invite to play.

I almost feel like they're a bit too aware sometimes.  If I go up or down the track at Daytona looking for cars to draft with, sometimes a car catching me from behind will lift when it could have got away with staying on the throttle for a couple of seconds without hitting me.  When I'm passing, though, they give me enough space to make the move but not so much that they're jumping out of my way, and the passes they make on me are generally well-judged.

I haven't really found anything I dislike so far.  The handling with all assists off in Pro requires full attention without being impossible, which is exactly what I wanted.  The graphics are great, the engine sounds are nice and full, the career mode seems like an improvement on last year, Rusty Wallace's track guides are a nice touch...I wish I could race it online with people outside Europe, but otherwise I'm loving it.

Real sorry to hear that.  I was hoping to get some more time in with you.  Can you import a US version and play with us then?  Is that possible or is it that your machine won't play a US version.

I was sorry to hear it as well.  Was really looking forward to racing with the whole crew here.   Hell, they are the same freaking game ...... how could EA be so short sighted?

OK, some observations after a night long infatuation with this game:

- MUCH better than last year's version.  Also, I was pleasantly surprised that I got about 12 bucks trade in today for the 08 version.  Hell, I have already played more 09 in one evening than I played 08 in almost a full year of owning it!
- Even with a shortened race, check out the shadows changing during the day races.  As you get toward the later laps, the shadows on some turns are more pronounced and actually pose a challenge!
- The challenge mode is better than last year (more in-depth), but still tough.  I find it difficult to keep up with the lead car in drafting mode.
- After 12 career races, it gets a little tough just going around in circles, but the career mode is so deep, it keeps sucking me back in.
- Track ownership is fantastic!  It only compares you with people on your friend's list.  Sorry Jason, but I stole ownership of Lowe's away from you and got a 10 point achievement for my efforts.
- The short tracks can be nasty!
- Black flags piss me off!

Too tired to think of more at the moment.  Thankfully I am in an online poker tourney tomorrow night, so I can rest up for the weekend.

Confusingly, Jeff Gordon's intro piece when I selected XBox Live told me I could race drivers from around the globe.  I don't recall seeing any of you in my Own The Track list, though.  I'm sure it won't work, but if one of you happens to see me online, I'd appreciate it if you could send me a game invite and see if our two games know each other this year.

Ted, I'm assuming from the way my copy is NASCAR 09 EU and yours is NASCAR 09 that there's region locking in place, and my 360 can only play PAL games.

The more I play this game, the more I find to love about it.  I thought I was imagining the shadows getting longer until I saw Grambo mention it, the sun in late afternoon going into the last turn at Watkins Glen or turn 4 at Daytona is dazzling, the cockpit view is wonderful and fairly easy to race with, and the driver challenges have started springing surprises on me (as an example, when you come to race Gordon at Talladega, there's a wreck avoidance section at the beginning.  They don't mention it until it happens, and you've got to go through absolutely flat-out otherwise you lose the draft and have no hope of winning).  It should be great online with a sensible bunch of players, because the controls allow for side-by-side running and the tracks have more than one workable groove.

One last thing - have you noticed how a car that qualifies up front doesn't necessarily stay there?  I don't remember that happening in past games, but it's another realistic touch.  I had David Gilliland start on pole at Daytona and work his way back outside the top 20 by the end, while David Reutimann (or the UPS car, at any rate - I was a bit busy going backwards through the field so it could have been Jarrett going past me) came through from 39th up to the fringes of the top 20 by the end.  There were other less dramatic examples of it all the way through the field, and I do like knowing that there'll be AI cars with a strong qualifying car who'll fall away in the race while others do the opposite; it feels much more like a proper race this way.

IGN has posted their not-so-good review of NASCAR 09 and it starts like this:

"To me, the sport of NASCAR is a bit like classic Russian literature. I respect it, but I don't really claim to understand it." http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/881/881704p1.html - Full Review

Hmmm...So let someone with little NASCAR knowledge review a NASCAR game for a major gaming site Rolling%20Eyes.

He gives the game a negative review based on some ridiculous complaints:
  • As with NASCAR 08, there are no team dynamics this time around. (Thanfully EA got rid of this crap on the new-gen consoles)
  • Pitting is also boring, as there are no mini-games or quick-time events to keep things interesting. (Who wants to play mini-games while racing?)
  • I raced most of my first career on normal mode with only yellow caution flags turned on. I easily won almost every race I entered. (Try a harder level and turn all the assists off)
The reviewers from these these big sites are just clueless when it comes to sports/racing sim games.

Unfortunately, Adam and I couldn't race against each other online. I don't know why EA has to release different/incompatible versions for the UK.

Atlanta is slowly becoming my favorite track so far. I love how it goes from dusk (complete with a setting sun) to night time during the race. The track is good size too - not too big and not too small.

Watkins Glen is, was and always will be my favourite NASCAR track.  Yes, it has right turns, but I'm terribly European like that.  Oval-wise, I like Bristol, Richmond and California, or Auto Club or whatever they call it these days.

Have any of you looked into the car customisation options in the game?  I've just finished painting my first car through the EA Paint Booth (available at easportsworld.com for those who've not already looked).  I didn't have any painting programs on my PC besides Paint so I downloaded paint.net as recommended by EA.  Even though I've very little idea of what all the icons mean, I managed to knock together a Jagermeister car inspired by the famous orange-coloured Porsche sportscars and BMW touring cars of years gone by, and though it's nothing more than one colour fill with some pictures saved from websites and layered on top, it looks very nice in game.  On the same car, I suspect that I've made myself the only driver on the NASCAR circuit to carry sponsorship from Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville.

What difficulty is everyone racing against offline? I'm finding it pretty easy to beat the CPU set to normal on the speedways and super speedways. I can't even finish a road track though Embarrassed.

Same settings as Ted, with manual gears.  I can win the road courses, the short tracks and the superspeedways no problem (my superspeedway car is maxed out using performance points from the driver challenges, my road and short cars are enhanced but not maxed), but on the speedways I'm what a charitable observer would call 'inconsistent', even though my speedway car is maxed out too.

Jason, if the road courses are your downfall, remember there's a European on these boards LOL Get the majority of your braking done in a straight line, let the car roll into the corner, roll gently and steadily back into the throttle, repeat, and don't do anything too abruptly because a big, heavy stock car will spit you into the fence before you can say 'Easy, tiger' if you do.  The other big thing is to practice at Watkins Glen to start with (or put WALMART EVERYDAY into the cheat code area to unlock a nice, flat road track around Chicago Pier), because Infineon's elevation changes and switchbacks will do nothing but give you fits initially.

Thanks for the advice. I had started at Infineon (because last Sunday's race took place there), but quickly realized that I should start with Watkins Glen. I'll have to check out the Pier track.
