Excellent. The only thing left to determine is the length of the season.

Looking forward to the Daytona 500 Thumbs%20Up.

I guess we go with the full 36 races.  There will probably be some that get skipped along the way.

I found this at OS and thought there were some good ideas:

  1. Use a headset! (Communication is key to running green flag races.) However, idle chit chat during practice is cool. But once qualifying starts and then the race, it should be kept to a minimum. If you are talking, you aren't concentrating on hitting your marks and driving clean. Not to mention it's distracting to those who are concentrating and it clogs up the airwaves when someone does need to communicate.
  2. Watch your language. (Nothing is more irritating than having to hear profanity every other minute.)
  3. Be respectful of others on the track during practice. If you are stopped or you pause the game, move to the shoulder or the grass.
  4. Stick to a difficulty level you are comfortable with. (Don't use Pro/Legend if you can't consistently turn laps without spinning out.)
  5. Do not pass cars on the inside before the start/finish line at the start of the race or during restarts. (This can be avoided by black flags but some rooms don't turn them on.)
  6. During green flag pit stops... Let everyone know if you are pitting and when you are coming out the pits.
  7. Do not accuse folks of cheating. (It's tempting, especially if they are running 2 seconds faster than you. It is what it is.)
  8. If you have a faster car than the car in front of you, let him/her know. Tell them! "John, you have me coming high." or "Jane, you have me coming low." (When you do so, preface it with the name of the person you are trying to pass.)
  9. If you host a race, give a 2 minute warning when you proceed to the next stage. (Folks may be working on their setup and need to save them.)
  10. Host a private room vs. a public room whenever possible.
  11. Don't lose your temper! Remember, at the end of the day, it's just a game.
  12. When you are coming outta the pits, even during practice, stay on the pit lane until the backstretch. I see way too many people who just pop out onto the track in turn 1.
  13. No passing until the backstretch after a restart.... Almost every caution after a restart is due to cold tires and a first turn pass. While your tires won't be warm by the back straight, chances are your going to be in a much better position to make a safe pass on someone by turn 3 than you are in turn 1 after a restart.
I want to add one of my own for Kevin:
  • No more quotes from Talladega Nights Wink

I like those pointers.  I have to say I think we could avoid half our yellows with a simple "(Name), going low or high" before passing.  I don't think any of us are trying to block and if the guy behind us is faster or running a better line we're willing to let him through, especially if it isn't the last 5 laps of the race.

Another thing I have noticed that people are doing (myself included) is that when we lose our line and drift high we try and let off and dip back down onto the line asap.  If a guy is close behind he is rightly seeing this as an opening to pass.  The guy who lost the line should be cautious about trying to dip right back down.  We are coming back down hard on top of each other and this has been causing some avoidable wrecks.  Check your mirrors and also the guy behind should announce his move if he's going for the pass at that point.  I've been trying to stay high if I lose my line and re-establish it on the straightaway.

If a driver is swerving back and forth across the lanes he is becoming a hazard.

Race night is Wednesdays.  Practice starts at 10 pm Eastern.  Qualifying at 10:30 pm and racing immediately after.

Settings:
Race Length: 20%
Wear: 4x
AI strength: Easy
Damage: Full*
Flags: Full

I'm good with and like these settings.  If we had just a few more guys (like 8, even) I'd probably prefer AI off because I've seen them do some really crazy things online, but I do understand that the track can get lonely feeling, and that's not nascar.

Ted, I also TRY to hold my line when I'm high and I know that someone is underneath me, but sometimes I swerve back down a bit too far while trying to avoid that wall that likes to jump out in front of me! Embarrassed

Yeah, I'm pretty confident going into tomorrow, but Auto Club next week is giving me fits.  I can't get anywhere close to the times the AI puts up on hard.  I might just have to hope for a decent finish next week.

What is the easiest way to remove performance points?  Do I have to delete my save?

Posted By: TedSGN
Date Posted: 06-25-2008 at 12:43am
Unfortunately I think you do.  I had to delete mine because it would freeze every time it loaded.  The setups and my car were still there though so that was good.

Did you apply your performance points?  I had earned about 150, but didn't apply any of them.  So if you haven't applied them I think you can just continue on and not delete.

Yeah, I earned and applied 15 when I first got the game, by basically following Gordon's tutorial on how things worked.

No biggie at all.  It was just the one challenge, and I hadn't started a career or anything.

This might be (probably is) a stupid question, but do the performance points only apply to a "custom" car?  In other words, I've applied some to a car I've painted up and all that, but not to an existing car.  So, could I join in, choose an existing car, and the points won't apply to it?  Does that make sense?

Unfortunately, performance points will help you out online no matter what car you select. :(  Dumb move on EA's part.

I "may" have a problem tonight.  The Direct TV guy is here to install my dish, so I'm not sure how that is going to affect my cable tonight.  My DSL hookup isn't in yet, so there is a chance I may not have internet access tonight.  I should know in a couple of hours (of course, if I lose internet, this may be my last post until tomorrow!).

Good race tonight guys.

Just noticed a small problem with the league site - the "Points For" (PF) only allows two digit numbers. Let me try to get that fixed tonight.

I'll keep an updated season table and race by race table in the first post of this thread as well.  It will allow us to have a few stats to look at also.

Do we need to skip a week since next Wednesday is the Wednesday before 4th of July weekend?

Good race tonight, guys.  The yellows at the end kind of threw a wrench in things and pushed us all behind the AI for the final two laps.

I was happy to finish 2nd and start Simpson Motorsports and The 40 Tums car on the road to ultimate victory this season.

Hope everyone can make next week.

From EA's Blog:

Last thing, we have seen the reports of some problems surrounding the performance points and how they can be exploited. We are investigating the reported problems, and are examining the feasibility to fix those issues. We should have more info on that at a later date.

Just to reiterate from what we were talking about last night, we now can choose any car, run any setup, and have any number of performance points, right?

Posted By: JasonSGN

Any car and any setup is fine. How does everyone else want to handle performance points? I don't have any, but don't think it's fair for people that want to play a career offline. I'm hoping EA addresses the issue now that they're aware of it.

Ugh...  I deleted all of my stuff last night for the league.  I had over 1300 RP's, and probably 100 points in upgrades that I'd applied between the 4 tracks.

Oh well, that was mostly for the review.  I don't mind starting over.  You can play a career without ever using PP's, so I would be okay with not using PP's at all, but it really doesn't matter to me.

Just let me know what we're going to do.  I need to get Ricky Bobby back on the track!  Smile

It sounds like maybe we caused a few people grief by forcing them to delete their performance points.  If it means we are more likely to keep all six of us that was racing last night in the league to the end then maybe we should allow performance points.  If there is an exploit that is being used by the online community in general then hopefully EA can eliminate it with a patch.

I've posted my Daytona setup for download from my locker if anyone is curious.  There is another race at Daytona this season and you all are welcome to use it if you like.

I'm good with anything, though I think we should have an official policy.  I only had 15 points which I deleted before yesterday's race, so I didn't lose anything much.  So we can go:

1)No points

2)Performance points to a capped level--possibly built around what the guys who raced with PP's for the first race are currently at, so we aren't asking for deletions.

3)Unlimited

I think PP's do make a noticeable enough difference, and the 'real' driver I took last night was also noticeably faster than my default custom 0 PP car.

Posted By: TedSGN
Date Posted: 06-26-2008 at 10:34am
I'll have to run a test and see if my 40 car is faster than my custom car with 0 PP with the same setup.

I hear what you're saying, D.  We just need to be consistent.

Some of this will depend on how 40's driver is on the type of track you run on, though.  When I switched to a Pro I made sure to choose someone with a high Superspeedway rating.  If your driver isn't all that good in that area, you may not notice that much of a difference.

I think performance points are overrated, I have quite a lot and you saw where it got me last night. Wink I don't think they are a real issue. I'd be more concerned with the numerous yellow flags and the AI ramming into you repeatedly coming out of a yellow flag which just causes another yellow flag or worse black flag for someone.

Simpson 'Delighted' With Points Lead

Speaking after last night's race at Daytona, Simpson Motorsports principal Adam Simpson said, "Ted did a great job out there tonight - he had the car dialled in from the very start and he drove to the level we know he's capable of.  We know Ted's got some worries about Auto Club next time out, but we're quietly confident that we won't have to invoke the 'release the hounds' performance clause in his contract."

Twopenneth on performance points from someone who isn't racing - they do make a difference, though the difference is more pronounced on some tracks than others.  At Daytona with hard AI, I can't qualify a 0 PP car anywhere above the high 30's in the order, but with a maxed out car I'm on pole by a mile and able to drive away from everyone in the race.  The speed difference isn't so pronounced at some other tracks, but it's easier to be consistent with a higher-rated machine, and you won't be chewing up the tyres in so much of a hurry trying to go quickly.

In all honesty, I saw it in you pretty obviously last night.  Your car was quite fast off any sort of restarts...noticeably faster than the average.  For all the ones while you had gas in your tank, that is. Wink  You even had a bigger giddy-up than Ted.

Posted By: TedSGN

D, everyone had more giddy-up than I off restarts last night.  The setup I run has a lower differential setting and accelerates slower than the veteran setup.  If you were comparing Fazeo's to mine that would not be a good comparison.  However, if he was using veteran and so were you and he was walking away from you on the starts then you must be right.

Yeah, it was against the field...not you specifically.  I just mentioned you too because of your sick times Clap

It's really no big deal for me personally, though, because I know I'll be missing a few races here and there and I'm not going to spend much time with things other than the actual race night.  I'm just saying I can see a difference.  Last night it was my 0 pp car vs the pro car and Fazeo's starts that really stood out.

I guess we should also decide what happens to folks that miss a week, since I'm unfortunately going to have to do that as soon as week # 2.

1) See if other folks want to move the day. (I'm against this, but it's an option)
2) Big Fat Zero!
3) Some sort of AI scoring...Avg AI points? Best?  Worst?  Position of AI points corresponding to your position in the league?...eg, I'm third in the league at the time of missed race, so I get the 3rd best AI points...

Something else?

I'll be missing a couple in July due to my vacation.  For the record, last night was the first race I've ran with a 0 PP car, and I could tell a difference.  I'd say it cost me a second off of my best times (which I don't always run anyway, for obvious reasons!).  That said, I really don't care too much what you decide.  I'm just in it for the fun.  Someone has to be "Dick Trickle" in our little league!

Well, the original plan was that we have one race per week and as long as at least two drivers show up it is an official result.  If one or none show up then we just move to the next race on the schedule.  Drivers that miss races would get 0 for that week.  I think we are all going to miss some races in the next 35 weeks.  The one thing we did mention was holiday weeks.  Are we going to hold races during the holiday weeks like July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas?  I don't really have a problem with the league going dark on holiday weeks.

The July 4 holiday week is why I'll be missing next week, so if we skip it, that works for me! :)

But I do want to be fair to everyone else, though, and if I'm the only one with a problem with it, I'll take the zero!

Here are the results of my test at Daytona.  I used three test vehicles.  My custom car #140 rated 50/50*/50/50 with no performance points added, my regular ride #40 Tums with Dario rated at 76/79*/65/92, and the #008 Nascar driven by Jesse Clemmons who is rated at 99/99*/99/99.  I ran 10 laps at Daytona using the setup I  used last night in the league race.  All test runs were clean with no rubbing the walls, dropping below the apron, or squealing the tires.

Make of it what you will.  The interesting things to me was that I was most consistent with the 50 car which followed the typical bell curve from pit to pit.  Second, I was  fastest with my regular ride.  Third, the 99 car felt a little bit more powerful, but it didn't translate into a faster time.  Maybe I expected it to be more powerful.

At this point I think we should just go ahead an allow guys to run what they want to run.  You want to use the 008 car for the 99 ratings?  Do it.  You want your own custom ride with the points going where you want them?  Do it.  You want to run a specific car for the whole season like I am doing?  Do it.  The only thing I would suggest is that you pick one car and stick to it for the season.  It is easier to recognize each other on the track that way.  I personally like to run with the player bubbles off because they are distracting when racing so being able to recognize another human by sight because they are always in the same ride is a plus.

I think we are all in this for the fun and competition and don't think any of us are out to exploit anything EA may have left out in the code.  This stuff is impossible to police anyway and it is more fun to just race.  I don't want to start a system where we limit points.  It's easier to say all or nothing.  And I think allowing the points will let the league complement the single player experience and vice versa.

Unless there is disagreement among you let's go with allowing the points and my apologies to those that deleted their points before.

Simpson's Motorsports not happy with finish, driver vows never to share a setup with Jason again.

When asked about his disappointing finish in tonights race at Auto Club, driver Ted threw his helmet across the garage and used some colorful language to describe fellow leaguer Jason.

"If that son of a ***** doesn't get into me on lap 28 after I announce I'm pitting, the leaderboard looks a lot different.  We have 15 or 20 laps of clean racing and then he pulls his aggressive stunt.  After that the AI must have figured....heck if he can do it why can't we."

Some race observers did agree that after Jason and Ted rubbed each other in turn 3 that the AI and others became a bit more loose resulting in 5 cautions in the final 22 laps of the race.

When asked about his pit strategy mistake and having to pit with two laps left, Ted became enraged and went off on Jason again.  As he was calming down Jason walked by with champagne and hot chicks gathered from the winner's circle and Ted went running after him with a spanner, threatening to do grievous bodily harm.  Before he could reach Jason, Ted was tackled from behind by Nascar officials, restrained, and later fined $10,000 for his unsportsmanlike behavior and giving Nascar a bad image.WinkWinkWink

I think my only chance to get a top 10 finish is when some guys can't make it, like last night, LOL...  My goal is to lead just one lap in one race this season!

Anyone watch the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona on Saturday?  I caught the final 25 laps.

I have now been reborn.

I have never watched more than one or two races per year, but I don't remember there being the contact and aggression, especially at a Superspeedway, that I witnessed at Daytona.  What a mess.  4 or 5 yellows in the final 22 laps.  Those guys were worse than us!

This got me to thinking that I worry too much about being a "clean" racer and how clean we are racing as a group.  Yeah, yellows are a drag, but I'm going to start being a bit more aggressive out there.  I took some lessons from the guys running 2 through 7 on Saturday so the rest of you better watch out cause I'm going to bump, rub, and push my way into position from now on.

This goes double for you, 24.

LOL

Yeah, I watched the race Saturday night. It's a shame what happened to Jeff Gordon at the end.

There's a big difference in racing aggressively and dirty. Bumping, rubbing and pushing are part of the sport and not considered dirty.

"Duck and Cover," Says Simpson Motorsports Principal

Quizzed on the increasing needle between the drivers of cars 40 and 24, Adam Simpson was quick to back driver Ted Leiker, enthusiastically supporting his driver's claim that the 24 crew could expect to wake up in the morning and pi$$ excellence, spelt 'blood', should they wreck the 40 car again in Las Vegas.  "I don't know what the fans should expect from Wednesday night," he continued, "but I sure hope they know the fundamentals of duck and cover.  One thing I do know - this can only end well."

With that encouragement I'll be looking to get back on top of the leaderboard Wednesday night.
