Saudi Arabia upsets Tunisia in snowy World Cup opener.  The only goal of the game came off the foot of Jaler at 51'.  Although outnumbered 3 to 1 in the box, Jaler found the ball on his foot after a lucky bounce and put it far side of the keeper to give Saudi Arabia a victory in their first group stage game.  Tunisia will be hard pressed to find a way into the round of 16 still having to face Ukraine and Spain.

The Ukraine set themselves up for a good shot at the round of 16 by dismantling Saudi Arabia 2-0 under sunny afternoon skies yesterday.

Led by Schevchenko, Ukraine was able to out pace and out muscle the Saudis for 90 minutes.  Threatening early and often, Ukraine bounced one off the crossbar with their first shot and sent the rebound wide.  Settling down, forward Voronin scored twice, at 15' and 51'.

The Saudis never looked comfortable and were forced to deal with early crosses that created a lot of havoc in the box.  While statistically the two teams looked even, the class difference between the two teams was very evident.

Saudi Arabia will need a miracle win against Spain to even have a hope of advancing, while Ukraine can try and put away Tunisia for a guaranteed trip to the round of 16.

The rain was unkind to Tunisia again, as Ukraine held off a furious second-half assault to remain undefeated in Group H.

Shevchenko opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a low ball past Tunisia's diving keeper, and Gusiev followed up with a blast from outside the penalty area in the 37th minute to put Ukraine seemingly in control.  Tunisia was unable to mount much of an attack at all, as Ukraine nearly appeared to be playing with more than the alotted 11 on their side.

It was a tale of two halves, though, as Tunisia dominated the majority of the second half.  In the 46th minute, Tunisia earned a penalty, as Cleypon stepped forward to put Tunisia back in the match.  However, a diving stop by the Ukraine goalkeeper kept them off the board, for another two minutes, anyway.  Feeling the momentum shift their way, Gemandiar displayed some fancy footwork through the reeling Ukraine line and punched in a right-footer from 6 yards out to make it 2-1.  Six minutes later, Goldhane clanked the equalizer off the woodwork, which put a scare into the Ukraine faithful.

After some timely defensive substitutions, Ukraine was able to regain some composure and fend off the Tunisian attack for the remainder of the match.  With two wins in the group, Ukraine is virtually guaranteed a spot in the round of 16.

LOL - There so much more I left out...  I could not keep Jason out of the middle of the field in my half for the entire second stanza.  He also had some big time speed on the wings, which neutralized my crossing game.

We had a lot of fun.  It really was like two different games.  In the first half, I could do no wrong, and in the second half, he was unstoppable.  I got lucky to get the win, given the PK and the clanger off the post!

I'm looking forward to finishing up group H...  Seth, are you out there?!

Nice work stopping that PK.  While odds are that Jason would not advance with Tunisia to the round of 16 with a draw because he still had to face Spain,  that save probably guaranteed Ukraine's advance.

I added Weather Condition to the bottom of each post so far.  It will be interesting to track the number of rain/snow games we get.

I'm loving this tourney!

Spain eliminated Saudi Arabia tonight, but not before giving up the tying goal and being given a run for their money by the spunky Sauds.

The Saudi manager set up in a defensive 5-3-1-1, hoping to hide in their turtle shell until the second half and and go for a late draw.  Spain so outclassed the Saudis that this looked like the only viable strategy to give the Saudis any hope of making the round of sixteen.  Get the draw and hope that somebody beats Spain badly enough to advance through the backdoor.

Spain pressed hard throughout the first half and at 25' Fernando Torres was able to draw a penalty kick off an overzealous Saudi back who inexplicably made a sliding tackle in the box.  The kick was right on target, down the middle, and put the Spaniards up 1-0.  The half ended and Saudi Arabia switched to a 4-1-3-2.  At 49' Torres put away another shot to go up 2-0.

At this point the Saudis showed some real spark and roared back, answering tackle for tackle and running up their own foul total against the typically bullying tactics of the Spanish manager.

Just three minutes after Spain scored their second goal, Saudi Arabia's Shilafay scored a beautful header off a cross from the wing that occured after the wing broke loose by several yards.

Seven minutes after that the Saudis drew their own penalty kick and tied the game.  Rather than retreat back into their shell, the Saudi coach felt his players had the momentum and was able to visualize the Spanish coach punching his couch, gripping his controller with white knuckles and sweating profusely about the brow and armpits.  The Saudis went for it.   Momentum was on their side.  Several more shots and headers threatened, but Spain held the line.

Then at 88' Spain's Reyes found the ball on his feet and put a nice, low, and hard shot away to give Spain the go ahead goal late.  The Saudis, desperate, dashed forward, but imploded late, scoring an own goal on the last Spanish corner kick.

Spain, breathing a sigh of relief, shored up their chances of making the round of sixteen and the Sauds go home.

Ted, great write-up of last night's game!

Jason and I played tonight, and the results are below.  It was pretty nuts, and I think a lot of the blame falls on the less than stellar performance of Tunisia's keeper.  Someone needed to remind him that he was allowed to actually stop the ball... not just re-direct it into the goal behind him.  Tunisia managed two very sharp goals nonetheless, and managed to block a penalty kick in the second half after the ejection of Jaynie for a dangerous sliding tackle in the box.  Of the eleven goals scored, nine came in the first half.  Fernando Torres continues his streak of excellence, netting the hat trick, and Reyes chips in for another two goals on the tourney.

That scares me...  Jason shredded my Ukraine squad in the second half much the same way!  It looks like I'll be playing "keep away" as much as possible against Seth!

Are you available anytime Saturday, Seth?

I'm just pretending the first half never took place since the score was 1-1 in the second half .

Seth's really good at dribbling through traffic (something I cannot do) and puts alot of pressure on the opposing offensive players. He forced me into making a bunch of mistakes.

Wowie...  I was no match for Seth...  I couldn't get the ball away from him, or keep him from getting it from me!  And, in the rare moments I actually had space, I'd panic and give it right up.  I'll save the details for Seth's match report, but it wasn't pretty...  Smile

Funny... my impression of the game as were playing it, was that Kevin was a very good passer and did a good job of pressuring me in the early going... I was pretty nervous.  Ukraine did have a tough time getting good looks at the goal, as evidenced by the disparate 'shots taken' tallies.  Fernando Torres continued his magical ways, utilizing an effective dribble fake in the box and sending home a low, hard shot to the side the keeper was actually covering to get his first goal at 28'. 55' saw Torres strike again, sending home a nice header off the corner kick.

Things went quiet for the next thirty minutes, and Ukraine wasn't out of it until a JAW-DROPPING effort by the Ukrainian keeper in which he lunged again and again to block THREE (!) close range shots before finally allowing a Reyes header to slip past him (84').  Torres was given the rest of the day off, and Reyes nabbed one more for safety after establishing position in the box, turning, and shooting low (87').

Paella and sangria for everyone!

Seth, your ability to control the dribble and tackle effectively are incredible.  I need to work on those moves!

I just wanted to get out of there without being embarrassed.  Unfortunately, those back-to-back goals around the 80th minute did me in.  That series with my goalie was impressive, though!  I just couldn't clear...

I learned a lot, though, and had fun!  Smile

The Odemwingie goal was really nice.  Whenever your guys got some space, their shots from distance were very strong and on target.

Goals:

Portugal - Simao - 37',  Pauleta 89'

It was a frantic match from the get-go, as both sides used speed and pressure to create opportunities.  At times, it appeared to be more of a pinball match than a game of footie, as the ball was flying all over the pitch.  The Nigerians were relentless in their pressure, but failed to get off any decent scoring chances in the first stanza.  Portugal pressured down the flanks, as expected, and Simao put up the first tally off of a beautiful service from Ronaldo.

In the second half, it was all Nigeria for the first forty minutes.  They used their speed to force the issue in the Portuguese half of the field, but were unfortunate as two shots bounced off the woodwork, and many more scurried just left and right of the mark.  It took all of the Portuguese skill and fortitude to fend off the relentless attack, and occasionally mount a counter.  In the 89th minute, Pauleta put in another service off of a counter-attack to seal the Nigerian's fate.  One can't help but believe that on any other day, the score would be reversed.

Great game between Mexico (Jason) and Iran (me) last night... I wrote down the details but got sucked up by Oblivion before I had a chance to post them.  Long story short:

Great defense all around.  Iran outshot Mexico 20 to 7, but the only goal scored came off a cross that an Iranian player headed towards goal, but ended up bouncing about four different players before finally being directed in by what I believe was the Mexican goalie's left shoulder.

Jason mounted a good late game attack, drawing a free kick from what was literally inches outside the box in the closing moments.  The save was made, but the ball frittered in front of goal as time wound down, as several clumsy legs vied for it.  Iran finally cleared to preserve the 1-0 victory.

Portugal - Simao 26'

Portugal was in top form tonight, as Pauleta scored a hat trick against an out-manned Mexican squad.  The Portuguese pressure was relentless to start the match, but the Mexicans defended well, until Simao headed home a beautiful service in the 26th minute to break the scoreless tie.  To finish off the scoring in the first stanza, Pauleta displayed some fancy footwork to outwit the right side of the Mexican defense, and loft a pinpoint left-footed strike in the upper 90, off the keeper's mits.

An aggressive Mexico squad formualted some solid attacking opportunities in the second-half, only to come up short.  Portugal's counter attack was deadly, as cross after cross found its target in the box.  The opportunistic Pauleta capitalized on a give-away from about 30 yards for his third goal, and netted the last home on a service from the flank, as the inside size and strength advantage of the Portuguese squad was evident.

Well!  Obviously it was the Vednikram show tonight.  Just insane.  Portugal jumped out to the VERY early lead, but Iran stormed back and held control for the entirety of the match.  Iran's physical strength has made them the surprise of the bracket, as they always seem to successfully fight their way to loose balls or maintain position for the entry pass.

Don't give up hope, Kevin!  Iran is a pretty good team!  There will be brackets in which to exact your revenge!

I just can't stop anyone in the middle of the field.  I didn't help myself when I got frustrated, which led to a couple of PK's, plus a couple of poor give-aways in my own end.  I was literally trying to run and hide to kill time at the end of the game.  It was brutal.

I'm sorry I just can't give you match, Seth...  From now on, I'll just concede.  That's only a 1-0 victory for you, right?!  Big smile

Good defensive match tonight... don't be fooled by the score.  Two were situations where the ball was bouncing around in the box like bumper pool and both times it happened to scoot out under the control of my player for a point blank shot.  The second of the three goals was an unfortunate own goal, where the ball glanced off the leg of the French keeper.

Seth's got a killer defense. He puts constant pressure on the ball, doesn't give you any breathing room and forces the offense to make a lot of mistakes. Now that I've played him a few times, I can honestly say that his defense scares me more than his offense (which isn't too shabby either).

France wins their first match in the SGN World Cup with a hard fought victory over Senegal 3-2. France came out strong and jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first half, but Senegal would not go quietly and scored 2 goals in the final minutes of the game (Slimcasila @ 89' and Dozaa @ 90'+) to pull within 1 goal. Fortunately for France though, time ran out on Senegal once they got momentum on their side.

Great game Ted. I was lucky to have a stronger team tonight and jump to an early lead. I was really sweating the final minutes of that game - excellent comeback Clap.

Senegal draws with Korea to keep hopes alive.  With conservative play they were able to hold off late game pressure by the Koreans to earn a point and stay in contention for a berth in the next round.  If Switzerland can miraculously defeat France and then lose to Senegal, the Senegalese will advance to the round of 16.

Brazil quietly dispatched Croatia tonight with a 2-0 victory in their group matchup.  Brazil controlled most of pitch and didn't allow the Croats a single shot on target.  Ronaldinho was in poor form and sat out the first half.  He was substituted in the beginning of the second half, but did not make much noise for the Brazilian side.  Hopefully his form improves for the upcoming matches against Japan and Australia.

Senegal had their dreams dashed in draw with Switzerland.  The Swiss stay alive and have a chance for advancement with a victory over heavily favored France.  France needs only a draw or better to advance to the round of 16.

In the most pivotal match of the tournament so far, Switzerland, who had to win to advance, came back from 1-0 to defeat France 2-1.  It was a spirited match from the beginning, as France's aggressive style earned Squillaci a yellow in the 3rd minute.  Switzerland, being out-manned, attempted a "blitzkrieg" offensive assault in the first half, and put considerable pressure on the French.  However, that strategy backfired as the world's finest striker - Thierry Henry - spearheaded a counter-attack to put France up 1-0.  The Swiss regrouped at half-time, as Vonlanthen squeezed a well-targeted shot between to defenders just inside the left post, to best France's staunch keeper in th 47th minute.  Both sides traded shots - and missed golden opportunities - until a bad giveaway in the French half led to a richochet goal from Frei, who bounced it off the keeper, and then back in off of his thigh, for the go-ahead tally in minute 66.

The French would not retreat, and put several scares into the Swiss defense, which at times looked like Swiss cheese against France's superior skill.  However, the ball simply would not travel into the goal for the unlucky France squad on this day.  The Swiss advance, staving off France's desparate attempts to draw even, which would've put France in the 2nd round of the tournament.

Ted... sorry I was a little incommunicado post-match... I got a phone call.

Another defensive struggle!  I like how you saved Ronaldo and Ronaldhino as subs for the final charge.  Was their condition too poor to start?

Both blue.  I subbed out 3 or 4 blue starters and a white starter.  Fortunately I had some reds on the bench so half my squad was subs, but in good form.  You played a great match, Seth.  I tried a bit of everything, but you found a way to keep my out of the net.  I commend you, sir!

And no problem about post match.  I kinda had the feeling you got pulled away.  I gotta produce a win in Brazil's final group match to guarantee the advance.  (fingers crossed)  It will be embarassing if I dont' advance with that team.

Brazilian player continue to struggle with form, but match up well with a similarly struggling Japanese squad and clinch a spot in the round of sixteen.  The singlular highlight for the Japanese was a spectacular save of the penalty kick awarded Brazil midway through the second half.

This game was more one-sided than the score indicates. Seth dominated from the opening whistle. The fact that I had 0 (ZERO) shots on target should tell you how badly I got my ass kicked.

Great game Seth. I forgot how stingy your defense is.
