....of a f**ked up culture?  I think I might be done with this game.  The constant verbal abuse.  The criticism without teaching or advise.  The win at all cost behavior among opponents.  The exploitation of early committing of CPU goalies.  The exploitation of getting stuck on the post of human goalies   The grotesque lack of team play in what is arguably the consumate team sport.  The pursuit of goals and assists at the expense of teamwork, camaraderie, and winning.  The carelessness, rudeness and lack of courtesy with which people treat each other.

My honest opinion is there is nothing redeeming or uplifting about playing this game online and it saddens me because this is what I always wanted in a sports game....to be able to take a persona online and compete with/against other people and their personas.

These comments have nothing to do with playing with Web or Brent.  This game represents everything I vehemently hate about the human race.  I don't think I can play it anymore and stay emotionally healthy.

I think any online game playing with the GenPop will get this kind of play.  Personally I can't stand it.  I played Duke Nukem yesterday and got stuck in a room where the "N" word was flying out of everyone's mouths constantly.  Then I entered another room and someone yelled "get the F out of my room" - since it was a ranked match, it wasn't his room.  Finally, I played one match where the lag was so crappy that I had to back out - this morning I noticed I got negative feedback for leaving early.

How does the online communication count with teamplay.  In other words, if there were three of us on a team, can we play with the other three being AI or does it force you to add more humans?  Do you only hear your own team talking or do you hear the opponents as well?

You can play with any mixture of humans and AI with a minimum of 2 humans.  Before and after the game you can hear the other team.  During play it is only your team.  In case I was not clear in my post all of the verbal abuse and criticism I complained about is coming from team mates in random ranked OTP BAP games.  The exploitations are primarily in EASHL club games.

What is GenPop...haven't heard of that.

Oh, sorry.  GenPop is my anachronism for General Population.  It seems more benign than the label I want to use ..... a-holes.

I'm of the belief that most people are assholes and the asshole ratio increases when you include online gaming and the internet. The sad fact is that most of your online gaming with randoms will usually turn out to be a negative experience.

Agreed, and which is why I stick to playing with friends from adult groups.  Unfortunately, I often tend to be an achievement whore, and Duke Nukem has three achievements easily attained by playing ranked matches (right Fazeo?).  Plus, when I played DN on the PC, it was my very first online experience and I never had a problem ..... people were still respectful back then (and couldn't talk to each other!).

The problem now is that you have all these internet tough guys and wannabe gangstas. My blood pressure would go through the roof if I played with these assholes online and I'd spend more time than I'd admit trying to track them down to kick the sh*t out of them. The only reason I come off as a nice guy is because I'm treated with nothing but respect from everyone here - I give what I get.

I'm the type of person that goes out of my way to hold a door open for someone in a public location, but have no problem telling them to f**k themselves if they don't acknowledge my gesture.

After saying all that, I really want to go online and kick the sh*t out of someone's hockey team tonight. Anyone going to be around later?

I'm in the mood for sh*t kicking myself, but my system is now a goner. :(

Let's see how long I can last being a Wii-only owner...

Nah, I'll have the original Xbox hooked up too, I'm sure.  Never did finish some good titles on there...

Great fun tonight, pucks hitting the net help. ;)   Ted, you need to share your strategy from game 2. It was a classic.

Brent, thanks for restoring my faith in this game online tonight.  It helped that we played 3 opponents that were more evenly matched with us, but  you certainly made the games fun.  The final one that we won 5-0 was just great.

I'll share my instigator tactic tomorrow LOL

I'm really sorry I missed out again tonight. I started working out again after a 6 week layoff and it's made me very tired at night.

Jason, I hope you can play soon.  Last night was a LOT of fun (finally).

The story of the tactic Brent referred to is this....

We played Pimpin in our first game and lost in shootout at the end of a 1-1 tie.  The two guys on pimpin were a #69 and a #1.

Brent had pointed out that #1 wasn't that good and watching a few replays showed that this assessment was correct.  #1 didn't have much of a deke move during the shootout and in general was giving up the puck alot.

Just by coincidence we got matched up with Pimpin again in the enxt game.  Much of the same game as the first.......So it was late in the third period and we're tied 1-1 again.  #69 once again had been taking the body all game and was hitting after whistles like a wild man.  On top of that his skater had two black eyes.  This guy must like to scrap is what I thought.

I told Brent my plan.  "Brent, I'm gonna instigate a fight with #69 and that will leave you 1-1 with the #1 guy.  I think you can beat him alone."  Brent sounded dubious about it, but gave me the go ahead.

It didn't take long.  At the next face off I started jamming on the Y button and #69 took the bait.  The fight was over quickly and I lost (my first loss in 6 fights), but the trap was set.  Brent and #1 went into OT.  About 1 or 2 minutes into OT #1 takes a tripping penalty and now it is just Brent 4 on 3 with the computer.  It didn't take him long.  I couldn't see what kind of shot he took, but he scored the game winner and we got retribution.

I realize the fight and tactic probably didn't really help us win, but it was cool to use the tactic to see what would happen.  Of course all the credit goes to Brent for finishing and getting us the win.

I finally gave in and cleared my cache this morning and I was only able to get through one game of NHL 09 before receiving the "Dirty Disc" error again Angry. EA really needs to patch this quickly. I'm going to try logging in under my son's profile to see if that works.

Have you tried clearing your cache?

Clear the Cache on the Xbox 360

To clear the cache on the Xbox 360 do the following:

  • Go to the Xbox Dashboard, select the System Blade, and select Memory.
  • Highlight the HD symbol and press Y.
  • Press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X.

You will see a confirmation message to confirm system maintenance, proceed.

I don't understand how the cache can cause a DDE?  And how would a patch address this since we're not all getting DDE?  Do you think you should try to exchange the disk for a new one.  It's been less than 90 days.

I've read about other people exchanging the game numerous times and still getting the DDE with the new discs. The good news is that EA is acknowledging the issue.

The one thing I did notice was that this starting happening after I downloaded the Tiger Woods patch this week.

I do think this year's has a LOT of bugs.  I've seen all kinds of issues online with freezes and the EA servers are having a hard time handling the load I think.  All kinds of weird things happen.

I'm almost afraid to type this, but I've played 3 games with no DDE's since doing the above [Fingers Crossed].

#3 is just hilarious.

#1 reminds me of a OTP BAP random game I had about a week ago.

LW:  Is anyone else getting high right now?

RW:  I am, hmmmph.

LW:  This game is sooooo gooood when you're high.

RW:  I knoooow man.

Arrrrgh

I love this thread.  It's why I'm not too interested in on-line gaming in traditional sports (and some other genres).  They're marketing the games and services directly at 15-20 y.o. tough guys.

Now on the other hand -- you should SEE how nice people are at avapeeps.com when trying to get a date or try to get a RL phone number... ;-)

Related question: Did any of you ever try Ultimate Baseball Online -- geared more at sports-fan culture than gamer-culture -- with tons of humans playing at once ?  If so, what did you think ?
