is coming on November 19th ( http://majornelson.com/archive/2008/10/08/the-new-xbox-experience-is-coming-november-19th.aspx - link ) and Tekken 6 was announced for the Xbox 360. Sony fanboys can't be happy about Tekken's 360 release LOL.

I'm looking forward to being able to load Xbox games on the HDD. The console is much quieter without the DVD drive spinning. I may look at buying a 120GB HDD for this reason only.

Apparently games will load quicker too:

Hands On...

Just posted on http://gizmodo.com/5060875/hands-on-with-the-new-xbox-experience - Gizmodo :

Quote:
The New Xbox Experience is ready to go live soon as part of the Xbox fall update, and after getting some quality face time with the UI and it's new features, I'm pretty impressed. The update addresses the core Xbox software on two levels: most notable is that the design of the UI received a complete overhaul, (mostly) eschewing the blades for a more immersive, intuitive, Media Center-like experience. Secondly, it adds new functionality, allowing for Netflix streaming, group-based gaming, heavily customized avatars, ripping games straight to HDD and an all new quick menu that comes up when you hit the home button.

The first thing you notice while using the new UI is how fluid and dynamic it is. Microsoft wasn't content to just create some static screens and call it a day. Many of the menus have multiple animations and 3D elements at work, which give the software life. Your avatar sits on the menu, fully rendered, loafing around on your screen. Moving from section to section is so fluid that you stop thinking about what your doing with the controller. There's also the Spotlight menu subset, which highlights the games and features of the Xbox you use the most, so that you don't have to waste time surfing menus. And this efficient mindset extends thoughout the entire Xbox UI.

We've touched on it before, but the level of customization you can put into your avatar is nuts. Clothes, Face, Body and Hair are all heavily modifiable within the avatar creator. And they not only feature prominently in menu system and Xbox Live's social features, but they will also be integrated into more games down the road.

The ability to rip games to your HDD is a neat feature that can not only cut down on load times, but the sound that comes with using the DVD drive. It's not intended to archive your entire games library, but rather the few games you play ALOT. In this context, I see it being very handy. It still requires you insert the game disc when you start a game each time, just so it can verify it's not a pirated copy, but after that, the disc drive lies dormant.

I didn't get a look at the Netflix software in this version of the UI, but based on the performance of the Roku and the screens of the Xbox Netflix interface, you can pretty much guess what that experience will be like.

Theme junkies will be glad to know that Themes 2.0 for NXE are far more integrated into the UI than before. Instead of a background and matching color scheme, Themes 2.0 now has features like 3D renderings instead of tiles behind each menu object, that relate to the theme in some way.

Party-style gaming is another new feature Xbox put a lot of effort into and are touting as a main feature in this new UI. I didn't get to see a ton of this mode in action, but I got the sense it will be popular amongst groups of friends who don't always want to play the same game the entire time they're on Live, but want to stay in touch just in case. The menus for creating parties are pretty simple, as you only need to select create party or invite friends and add friends from a list.

Lastly, the Video and Game Marketplaces has been revamped and are pretty well thought out. There are multiple ways to search for content, whether it be XBLA games, XNA games, additional game content, or video, you can search by name, genre or category, and the list continuously repopulates itself as you refine your search string letter by letter. Featured titles appear in the front menu.

Overall, the New Xbox Experience seems to be focused around an polished and efficient experience. We'll be getting our hands on the final version soon, so keep your eyes peeled for a full review.

Also you are forced to use an avatar, even if you completely despise them. It will not be optional.

From what I have read they will be pretty tame. No violent avatars, per say.

Xbox 360 Memory Upgrade Program

The New Xbox Experience requires at least 128 MB of storage. That means that some Xbox 360 owners won't meet the minimum requirements to download the new user interface when it launches on November 19, 2008. As a result, Microsoft is offering storage solutions.

If you own an Xbox 360 Core with less then 128MB of storage, you are eligible for either a FREE 512MB memory card or a refurbished 20GB HDD for $19.99; and if you own an Xbox 360 Arcade with less then 128MB of storage it appears, you may be eligible for a refurbished 20GB HDD + 3 months of Xbox Live for $29.99.

If you meet the criteria above, just go http://www.xboxstorageupgrade.com/ - here and enter your system's serial number and ID.

LOL I'll have to check that out tonight. I thought the avatars were optional, but I had to pick one before doing anything else this morning. For now, I just picked a default one and haven't customized it yet.

The Netflix thing works great, takes almost not time or effort to get set up.There is a lot of  more obscure stuff and music things available than I thought. Finally putting the Media remote to good use.
Install to HDD is smooth and fairly quick-at least as fast as DVD2Xbox on the old-gen Xbox.
Be sure to change your launch setting before doing it;you will then have the option to install or play the game in the disc tray.
Overall, this kind of has the feel of XBMC with the streaming and integration. Some sort of basic browsing capability would be nice, too.

I am loving the NXE so far. The dashboard is much quicker and everything is better organized.

I can't believe Bastille is ripping on my avatar, his avatar looks like a roadie for W.A.S.P strung out on meth.

I going to try installing NHL 09 and NCAA Football 09 to my hard drive tonight. It'll be nice to play those games without the disc drive whirling around.

Ditto.

By the way, I played a fantastic game against Jared last night for my online AGE dynasty.  He and I were the only ones of a dozen players to actually have a versus matchup in the bowls.  His 15th ranked Miami team took on my 14th ranked LSU team in the Chick-Fill-A Bowl, both teams sporting an identical 9-3 record.

I started the game off with a four minute TD drive, and he rebounded with a game tying score in the 2nd quarter ..... 7-7 at the half.  In the second half, we kept trading scores.  With about 3-4 minutes to go, I went out in front, but he scored a quick TD to go up 24-21 with just over a minute to go.  My first play from scrimmage was a long screen pass play to get me close to field goal range, but he sacked my QB on the next play.  On fourth down, I got "close" to FG range with 15 seconds left and only one time out.  I ran a quick HB run inside and called time out with 3 seconds left.  He iced the kicker and I had to kick a 33 yarder in "ice-out" mode.  The kick started off to the right but then hooked to the left and barely made it inside the upright ..... overtime.

My ball first.  Grinded my way to a TD.  Jared's turn ..... first play from scrimmage, Interception!  First turnover of the game for either side.  Final score, LSU 31, Miami 24.

Sorry to hijack this thread with a football story, but that game was just so much fun, I'm antsy to get some more games in soon!

Edit - Jared was 10-2, we were 9-3.

Sounded fun GB...  We need to get our little Online Dynasty and Season back up and running.

Just downloaded all 6 games I owned.  No big difference in loading for most but the fact that stupid drive is not humming makes it all worthwhile.

I'm seriously considering the 120GB hard drive for the game installation feature alone. For some reason I couldn't install NCAA Football though. When I put the game in, the Y button wouldn't show up. Was anyone else able to install NCAA Football?

I know the install to drive feature isn't available for every game, but I don't know if NCAA Football is affected by that.  Might be worth a quick google.

I'll have to try again tonight because people over at OS seem to have installed NCAA Football to the HD.

Yes, it should work... via Pastapadre:

" Size of Install: 6.3 GB
Start-up of game into the menu screen: 1:12 (disc) vs 1:01 (hard drive)
Loading into a play now game: 24 seconds (disc) vs 16 seconds (hard drive)
Loading out of a game into the menu screen: 35 seconds (disc) vs 34 seconds (hard drive)
Total time saved: 20 seconds"

I have all my games below (in my sig) installed (which includes NCAA 09).  Still have around 78GB's left on my drive.

From what I have read the one game people can't get to install is Crackdown.   Also Halo 3 is apparently a bad choice to install to the HD because it loads much slower.

I plan on copying the half dozen games I play the most, and will keep rotating it.  I just did NHL, but I plan on adding NCAA, Tiger Woods, Fallout and Left 4 Dead, plus probably one other.

Even though the load time changes are basically negligible, it is nice not hearing the whhhhhhrrrrrrrrr of the disk, plus it cuts down dramatically on the chance for a DDE.  Really glad I got the 120 gig unit last Xmas now.

I don't know what happened last night, but I was able to install NCAA Football today with no problems.

I have to say it is fairly amusing scanning the friends list and seeing all the new avatars! :)

I also see that Ted has been buying/renting/playing a lot of the new non-sports stuff!!

Influence of your son, Ted? :)

I try them, but he plays them more than I do.  Actually we're having the Thanksgiving-Christmas internet slow down again so I've been spending more time back with MS Flight Simulator.  I installed a bunch of mesh and scenery and have been creating my own scenery now and it is pretty addictive.  Back to 360 though.... we play Rock Band and RB2 on Fridays with my sister over Live as well.  All I'm really playing is that and NHL with Jake as we are working through our second season in the AHL.  Almost done and we feel good about contending for the the Calder cup this year.

I noticed Jason's avatar was asleep with some music instruments behind it.  Do you have RB or RB2 now Jason?

Maybe we could get those of us here that have the game a regular jam night for an hour or so.  We're even trading off singing between my house and my sister's on Fridays.  Talk about torture.

I don't have either, so I'm not sure why there would be musical instruments behind my avatar.

I've gone back to playing my real guitar again and even purchased a new amp a few weeks ago.

The backgrounds on the avatars are random.

I have RB2 as well.  I have to find my adapter to talk on Live, but I would be down, even though I suck at it.
