Anyone (Brent) know if there are any good video game deals this week? I'm especially interested in finding a copy of 'MLB 06: The Show' on sale somewhere.

Taking the plunge, Jason?  I was tempted last night...  I'll wait to see if it's going to make the online rotation, most likely, but I am definitely interested in it.

Kev,  have you tried NCAA this year?  I'm interested in what you thought of the gameplay.

I think it's a matter of "when" it's going to make the rotation, not "if" it will. MVP 06 will certainly remain in our rotation for a while too and it's been on sale for less than $25 during the past few weeks.

That's the plan. It would be a blast having 4 guys online with MLB 06: The Show.

I'll sell my copy for 25 bucks plus shipping. I'll also sell my PS2 slim with eyetoy and 8mb card for 100 bucks. I can't get into this game. MVP05 with updated rosters have me hooked.

I didn't.  I'm heading to the mainland Friday to pick up my daughter.  I'll have hours to kill before getting to the airport and I've got some errands to do.  However, I'll be checking out the game stores and I'll probably have a hard time resisting the urge to get something.  Like maybe a 360 if they are in stock.  My wife's gonna kill me.  If I don't make a post here after 3/17 and before 3/22.......call...the....poleeeeeeece.

LOL, Ted...

I'm thinking really hard about "the show."  I'm also thinking about picking up Gun for the Xbox, now that it's $29.99 new.  I'm still looking for some good old fashion western action!

For me, "the Show" would only be for online play.  MVP 05 will suit me just fine for career play, plus, I just don't like running franchises on the PS2, with the memory card issue.

Let me know when you guys get it.  I'll take the plunge.

The Show is definitely worth it.  I had some rough goings early on with regards to a fielding issue (you can read all about it over at DSP) but now I'm having a blast.  Maybe my favorite baseball game ever and definitely my favorite video game pitching experience thus far.

On another note... I know it's not a sports game, but if you can find a cheap used copy of Mercenaries and have never played it, it's pretty awesome.

Web,  I should be able to give you a definite answer by 9 pm.  Would it be ok to ask you to check back in at 9?  If you want to move on to something else or are able to make firmer plans for your online time I understand.

Lost 11-5.  I hit two home runs including a grandslam and gave up two homeruns.  Have a lot to relearn about the pitching in this game.  There's a lot I like, there is some stuff that I miss from MVP, but overall this is a very good game.  It still looks like the ball deflects down on fly balls off the bat, but in the replay that doesn't happen.  I'm curious how good and customizable the game is online.

Ted,

How's the fielding and zone-batting compared to MVP?

I think the fielding is harder and I feel more detached from my player.  It feels like the players are heavier than MVP.  I think fielding grounders is easier than fly balls and in real life I would have a harder time with grounders than flies.  But then again I was a natural outfielder.  This game just seems opposite to real life in that regard.  I really like that most of the throws from the outfield are off line, sometimes a great deal.  It makes you appreciate a good outfielder.  On the other hand I find that all of the throws I made during my game in the infield were right at the first baseman's chest.

I find it easier to time my swing than MVP, but it is harder for me to tell which zone the pitch is going to end up in.  The guess pitch is just like I remember it from 05 (the last version I played) and it helps to figure out where the pitch may end up or what is coming.  I miss hitter's eye from MVP.

After one game there was nothing about The Show that made me think it was a great game (meaning a 9 or 10), but there was also nothing that irritated me.  That may sound boring, but that is not what I mean to say.  I think it is just a solid baseball title.  Personally I'm interested in the college game more than the pro, but this is a good game without a doubt.

I did really enjoy hitting that grand slam.  I had bases loaded with 0 outs after a leadoff walk and two singles.  I got a 2-0 count and guess right on an inside fastball and tee'd off on it.

I also had a cool moment when I noticed during Giambi grounding out to 2nd that there was a rover in right.  Sure enough I checked and the infield had automatically shifted and only my third baseman was between second and third.  Either my SS or 2B auto shifted to cover Giambi's pull tendency and it resulted in an out.  Totally unexpected and the first time I've seen a video game play an extreme shift like that.  Giambi did burn me the next time he came to bat by going the opposite way with a bloop single.

A-Rod tagged me for a dinger and I hit one over Matsui's head that bounced off the top of the wall.  Matsui went up for it, but was just a little to the left of the ball and missed.  It was nice to see the CPU mimic a human that way.  I also saw Damon make a lunging grab for a base hit in the gap that he kept from going to the wall for a double.  He rolled over and came up firing to second.  The throw was offline and I might have had a chance at the double anyway, but his grabbing it kept me from hitting L1 to advance.

I'm looking forward to playing more.

I just created an 'MLB 06: The Show' ladder so you can record the scores of your online games.

11:30 will be good, Ted.  I actually forget my online name, but it's WEBPS2 or PS2WEB or something like that. :)  I'll set up the game in an east room, I guess.  I've only been online with the game once, and the set-up is a little clunky, so bear with me if it takes me a while to find you and get started.

What is your online name?

Do you think you can handle all-star, guess pitch?  Or do you want to do veteran? Veteran hitting is just timing based, while all-star is 4 zones.

Posted By: TedSGN
Date Posted: 03-18-2006 at 8:47pm
How is the offensive production on All Star online?  I ask because Jason and I tend to play lower difficulties online than off with the thought that a 6-5 game is more fun than a 2-1.

I also think it is more realistic for the human pitcher to be just as worried about the batter as a human batter is about the pitcher.

However,  I'll gladly play a game on All Star to check out how it plays if that is where you prefer to start.

I figure I'll have to make a tag since this is the first time online for me with a 989 product.  I'll be TedSGN or TEDatSGN so look for something like that.

Looking forward to the game!

Yeah, I play HOF offline so my buddy and I played on All-Star online.    We only played one game, but I think the score was 6-2, or something like that.

I'll start it there, but if you are not enjoying it, just quit or something so we can try veteran.  I'm mostly concerned about you handling the pitch speeds if you are just getting used to the game.

Posted By: TedSGN
Date Posted: 03-18-2006 at 10:58pm
Do you have a headset or will we be playing mute?  Just wondering.

I won't quit in the middle of a game even if I can't handle the speed.  We'll play it out at All Star.

Unfortunately, no headset. :(

I figure we'll use # 3 or # 4 starters, too.

See you in a bit.

Web said he had lag.  It was the smoothest online baseball game I've ever played.  He hosted so I don't really understand the lag on his end.  There is far less button lag than NCAA.  The bit of lag I saw was in the form of an instant pause and then resume while the game synched up I would guess.

I don't like the hitting nearly as well as EA's game, but I like the pitching quite a bit more.  I need to learn to hit in this game.  The game plays longer online than the EA game.  We went about 65 minutes last night and we were skipping through nearly all the replays and walk ups.  And I wasn't being nearly as patient at the plate as I am against you in MVP.  I just can't read the pitch well yet.  The worst part of reading the pitch is that balls in the dirt look like strikes to me.  I don't even see the ball hitting the dirt and it's past the catcher and I still swing because it looks like a pitch at the knees from my perspective.  I need to adjust to stop swinging at anything that looks below the belt.

I really don't like the infield fielding in this game.  I just don't have any control of the fielder.  It's almost automatic and the ridiculous part is that it's easier to field hard grounders (which make up 90%) than choppers.  It does that EA hesitation thing where your fielder decides he's not going to field the ball only in this version it is worse.

I think Web wants to play kinda regular.  Since I own it it's easy for me to say yes to the rotation.  I think Slumber likes it and will be around.  It would surprise me if you didn't like this game, but I don't think it is as good a game as MVP 06.  I'm happy to play ladder games with it for now though.  The bottom line is that it plays a smooth game.  It is fair and balanced and pretty fun once you get adjusted to the different mechanics.

Also, the game has the most professional presentation of any baseball game I've played and surpasses the excellence of the previous versions of the series in that regard.

To add:

I played an offline game Seattle @ KC (they are close in ratings) and won 5-2.  It was a good game of baseball with 25 hits combined evenly for the day.  No home runs, but 5 doubles.

I still think that the hit variety as far as hardness of hits is not that good.  But the pitching game is so good.  For everything this this game does great there is something mediocre to counterbalance and bring ithe overall experience down.  Thankfully nothing seems broken.

Posted By: Slumberland
Date Posted: 03-19-2006 at 11:48pm
Regarding variety of hit hardness, it's light years beyond last year's game.  I'm definitely seeing a lot of different speeds off the bat, and even some neat flares that manage to drop between the infielders and the outfielders for hits.

I feel you on the fielding being sort of automated, but I've gotten used to it.  Some of the animations are just so good, and the diving feels great when you pull it off manually.

Ted, I highly recommend the offset camera for batting.  It makes judging speed and height just a bit easier, at least to these eyes.

I'll give that a try, thanks.  The thing is though that I don't like to switch the cameras I use online and offline and I'm not sure if you can change camera online.
