The demo came out Thursday and I'm pretty damn impressed with the game.  Of course, I am a fairly avid follower of UFC, so it appeals to me naturally.

I don't know if there are any other fans of ultimate fighting here.  Either way, you should at least give the demo a spin.  The technical aspects of the sport are well represented and the gameplay is pretty smooth.

I will definitely rent this from Gamefly.

I'm always interested in a good fighter. I'll have to check it out this weekend.

Thanks for the heads up.  I'm not a follower of the sport, but I am interested in the game.  Will try the demo.

Jake and I played the demo and it is quite fun.  There are so many combos and the animations are smooth and the fighters look great.  The damage in bruising, swelling, and cuts is top notch.  I might buy this one.

After playing the demo some more I am strongly leaning towards buying this one.  Its very fun against another human and solid fun even against the CPU.  There something very satisfying about pulling off the different moves and attempting submissions.  And its always just base carnal pleasure smashing a guy with hammer fists as he lays on the ground.

I've dl'ed the demo but have yet to play.  I've enjoyed some of the earlier UFC titles that came out on and since the Dreamcast.

I'm going to download it once I decide which game to remove from my HD (MLB 2K9 or NHL 09). I really need a bigger hard drive.

I'm interested in both of your opinions of the demo.  Jake and I went from pretty much straight button mashing (which was fun) to figuring out exactly what we wanted to execute and playing to our fighters strengths.  By the time we finished up today you could hardly hear the buttons being pressed anymore and it became as much of a thinking/tactical game as a fighting game.  I found myself balancing my fight between reacting to Jake's attacks with counters and executing my own strategy.

A quick play of the demo is making me want to learn a bit more about the technical aspects of the game.  I've only had one fight, which I won using the time-honoured tactic of mashing the face buttons until something useful happened, but it did feel like there was something much deeper underneath and that button mashing would only get me so far (I was, in fact, knocked down first but recovered).  Until the demo hit I didn't know this game existed, but now I'm very interested.

You nailed my feelings exactly. I especially like the feeling of weight behind the punches and kicks. I took a quick look at the controls and was blown away with how many different things you can do. I'm going to play around with this some more once the kids go to bed. I'll be keeping my eye on the previews and reviews of this one now too.

I've noticed and really like that there are so many ways to connect with a punch or kick.  For example, in one fight against Jake I hit him three times with a left, but only threw two punches.  The first one connected with the fist.  The second one connected with the fist and then again coming back with the elbow.  So the second punch came in on the side of his head and through, then as my fighter was pulling his left hand back again to set he automatically used his elbow to connect with the opposite side of Jake's face on the return.  It was a real "wow" moment.

Jake and I are about even in wins against each other.  One of my favorite fights I beat him in 30 seconds or so with a submission on his shoulder.  It was fantastic.  He usually uses Liddel and I use Rua.

I haven't had the benefit of playing a human opponent yet, but I have logged several matches against the cpu.  The level of depth on this game is amazing.  I really like the fact that the game pulls off the feeling of depth without being a button mashing fest, but rather relies on tactical fighting.

My only complaint with the game is the extremely random knockouts that happen when you turn the game up to advanced or higher.  I know that can be the nature of the UFC, but it seems like an extreme case.  It could just be since I typically play with Shogun and Liddell does have some of the heaviest hands in the sport.  I can control the ground game very well, but I seem to have issues actually dealing out much punishment once I get side control or mount.

Posted By: TedSGN
Date Posted: 05-06-2009 at 10:05am
I concur with the statement about advanced, although I have knocked Liddell down on several occasions with just a couple of punches, well timed and placed.  I've never knocked him out like that, though, and he has me.  It may be a difficulty level issue.  I can say that this doesn't seem to be an issue in human v. human as Jake and I had one punch knockdowns and knockouts on each other, some of the best being high kicks to the head as the opponent was rushing in.

Whats the secret with submissions?  I can only submit people with Shogun when I have a healthy stamina advantage and they either got rocked or gassed themselves from trying to get away from the ground and pound.

Posted By: TedSGN
Date Posted: 05-06-2009 at 4:56pm
I'm not sure.  At first I thought it was a keep turning the stick thing, but now I don't know at all how to finish off the submission.  The only thing I can think of is to perform the controller move over and over until it is done?

I'm officially in chomping at the bit, can't wait for release mode.  I just played my first bout on expert and KO'd Liddell with a knee perfectly placed under the chin in :43 of the first round.

I can't wait to start Teddy Hammerzeit on his career in the MMA

I tried Liddell on higher difficulty settings and found it much easier to win with him then it was with Rua.  I know my shortcoming with using Rua is I get Chuck taken down or in clinch but I can't do much with it on the mat.  I think my problem is blocking Chucks transitions... I don't know how to do it.  I spend most time on the mat transitioning over and over.  If I knew the timings on when to block tranisitions I think I would do much better.

Posted By: TedSGN
Date Posted: 05-13-2009 at 5:52pm
I think Liddell is such a good wrestler that it is hard to keep him down on the mat.  He escapes alot against me.  I found, though, that he seems very susceptible to the Muay Thai clinch with knees to the ab.

I always get in trouble when I go after him, though.  If I'm patient and let him come to me I can mess him up.  If I get too aggressive he buries me.

Jared, if you plan on getting it release day I'd welcome some fun bouts so we can both get up to speed.  That would probably sucker Jason into buying it.  Jake is planning on getting it so maybe we can get some tourney/ladder stuff going.Smile

I sent back a game last night to Gamefly, so I should be able to get the game pretty soon... even if I have to purchase it Big smile

I played Rua some more and focused my GnP game on maintaining position and nailing big wide open strikes.  It worked out much better.  I had a few tap outs and knockouts from full mount, but most victories came from the muay thai clinch.

You too, Jared.  I need to get my ground game under control or I'm never going to give you a challenge.  I only really saw any lag in our very first fight and it either went away or I got used to it real quick. It was just a minor bit of slowdown at worst.

There is so much variety to the fights and fighters.  It's pretty fun and challenging.

I got knocked out in :08 seconds on experienced (2nd lowest difficulty).  Boetsch threw one punch, his first punch, on the button and I went out.  This kind of thing is what makes this arguably the best fighting game every made.

I think I finally realized why I find this game so superior to Fight Night.  I think FN has really come a long way and I like that series, but in UFC the camera is so superior.  In FN I never find a camera I like, just one I can live with.  In UFC the camera is so perfect I don't even realize it is there.  It pans and scans, zooms, and rotates all seamlessly and I never feel like I'm fighting against it.  The camera is perfect.

My biggest gripe about Fight Night 3 was the control system.  Yes, it was pretty cool and worked well for playing against the cpu.  When I played the game online, everyone wanted to stand at max range and throw haymakers all day.  I got tired of fighting for five or six rounds, dodging, countering and parrying haymakers and then getting caught by one on accident and getting rocked from there.  It doesn't really seem like there is cheesy, agitating stuff like that in UFC Undisputed.

I bought it.

Honestly, I only have two gripes with it.

1.  The menu system is a nightmare.  That combined with the constant saving of the game and the fighter make navigating and doing things outside of the octagon a chore.

2.  I don't like that career fighters don't age.  They progress, but my 23 year old is still 23 4 years later.

It look like you can use your career fighters online which is a plus.

Training is much deeper than FN's strength, speed, cardio routine.  You have those three things to train, but you also have skills to train so you have to balance building up your fighters core attributes (speed, strength, cardio) with his skills in the different aspects of the fight like striking offense and defense, kicking offense and defense, takedown O & D, grapple up and down, submissions O&D, etc.  You do this by sparring with your sparring partner and depending on how well you do in your spar you earn so many points to apply to the skill.  As you increase in skill each skill point costs more sparring points to purchase (progressive system).  The third thing you do to improve is train with different schools.  So you go visit these schools and if you perform specific tasks during your 5 minute training session you earn points for them  When you get enough points you advance to the next level in that discipline (for example Judo).  At the next level you learn some new moves that were not available to you before.  You could press those buttons, but it wouldn't perform the level 2 move if you were only level one.  So you can take a BJJ fighter like Rua and he would have a larger tool set to use against someone than my created BJJ fighter.  Finally, you have to balance all of this against your weekly stamina that goes down different amounts based on what training you  did and the intensity.  So some weeks you rest to regain.  You regain 50% each week.  Some training takes as little as 12 or 15% away and intense training can take over 50%.  After each fight you immmediately schedule your next fight through Joe Silva, who schedules all cards.  Occasionally Dana or Joe will jump in early with an email asking you to fill in for a hurt or sick fighter and you will fight on short notice with maybe a lack of rest.  In other words, not 100%.  You can refuse these fights and sometimes I do.  It isn't clear if there is a penalty for refusing the fights.

Outside the octagon, the career is very deep and there is quite a bit to manage, but it isn't hard.

I'm either too old or too fumblefingered for this one. (or both, I guess)  I got to a point in the demo tutorial where I was clinched or something and was told to press the 'opposite way' to break it, and could never once manage to do it.

http://www.pastapadre.com/8649/patch-in-the-works-for-ufc-2009 - Patch In The Works For UFC 2009

THQ is currently working on a patch for UFC 2009 Undisputed. Given the time it takes to create the patch and get through the certification process we are looking at probably over two weeks and most likely a month or so away. The patch will address the online problem with no result being recorded when people quit and also will work to eliminate some of the lag that has been experienced.

No word yet on what else, if anything, would be included in the patch. Hopefully some of the minor grievances with career mode will be fixed up as well. Given the apparent success and popularity of the title it was inevitable that it would be patched, though how significant and effective it will be remains in question.

Derek,

Breaking the clinch isn't certain.  Much depends on your clinch defense rating compare to your opponents offense rating, as well as timing the break (it can be countered) or your opponent performing an offensive attack on you that you aren't countering.

Much going on during the fights.

So the career has an interesting aspect to it.  Jake's 155lb fighter just got retired after 8 seasons in the octagon.  The fighters don't age, but at some point (don't know if it is always 8 years) they do not get their contract renewed by the UFC and Dana.  So this fighter ended up a 77 overall.  He can still be used in exhibitions and online fights.

This aspect has given me an idea for the SGNUF league fight nights.

Jake and I talked about it for an hour today.

Basically a scheduled fight night with an undercard and maincard, including 1 headliner.  Can be done with just two guys or as many as want to participate.  Can be participated in casually or dedicated as often as you want.  Most fights seem to take less than 15 minutes so participating in 3 or 4 fights could be done in an hour which seems to sit well with folks around here.

Since you can create up to 100 fighters you can get really creative.  You can use just 1 fighter or have a "stable" of fighters.  Your stable can only have created fighters in it.  You would probably want to fully develop your fighter to retirement before participating, but matches will be setup with close overall skill level in mind.

There may be a ranking system and belt for the different weight classes if there are enough fighters and it last long enough.  Right now just keeping fighter records will be cool enough I think.

It will take awhile to get going because it will probably take someone several hours of committed play to get a fighter to retirement.  But I'm hoping we'll see fighters for every weight class.  While we're getting fighters ready we can do some fighting with existing fighters maybe using a draft or claim system to get started.

I'm thinking a once a week fight night that goes through the summer and maybe beyond if there is still interest.

So if you want to participate just come up with a name for your school and start working on careers.  When you retire a fighter register him with his name, disciplines, and overall skill rating.  Then I'll try to start matchmaking and line up fights for the card.

Still rough ideas, but we're working it through and are a bit excited about the prospect.

Dale Sturmodick (heavyweight) retired at 24-10 and won his last fight against Cheick Kongo.  Sturmodick was ranked 10th before this fight.  He TKO'd Kongo in the first round.  Dale never got a title shot and was ranked 8th at his highest point.

Very comfortable.  Just start playing on beginner or experienced.  You will have good fights at those levels.  The controls start to become automatic and you get to a point where you can move up.  I'm on advanced now and can easily see myself moving to expert with my next career fighter after I'm done with my current lightweight.

The thing to know is that all those moves you see are generally the same r-stick or button combos.  Everything is contextual.  Depending on the position of yourself and that of your opponent you use the same r-stick movement, but it execute a move specific to the situation for both fighters.

So your r-stick movement combined with your opponents r-stick movement (or lack of any counter) will result in an animation specific to that combo.  It's like a choreography of sorts.  So after a few dozen fights you realize that you are only going to see 2-4 possible outcomes from your move.  Then you start your next move.  So you tend to start thinking one, two, or three moves ahead.

This applies on your feet as well.  While the striking and kicking game are generally less complex than the ground game it is still very tactical.  You go in button mashing and a skilled opponent will counter and take you apart.

The in game tutorial is very thorough and great, but I would recommend immediately starting a career and learning that way as well because part of career is going to camp every few weeks where you have to execute certain moves in practice and once you level up you learn new moves.

Jason, really,  get the game.  Put FNR4 on hold for awhile.  I can't imagine you not digging UFC.  It's really good.

Jake and Jared are both interested/committed to creating fighters and having them participate in the fight nights that we'll start having soon.  We're going to have 5 to 7 fights on the card, probably two undercard, two maincard and then a headliner.

-------------

Jason, to give you another example.....

The Y button is always a right hand when striking.  So if you are on your feet and in probing distance that will be a straight right.  Move a little closer and that same Y press will throw a right hook.  Move closer still and that Y will be a right elbow.

Add LB to Y from beyond probing distance and it will be a lunging overhand right.  A little closer and it becomes a roundhouse right.  Get closer still and it becomes an uppercut.

So the controls don't change, it is the context and position of the fighters that dictates what happens on the screen.

Ted, thanks for all the info.

I've been through the tutorial 2 times and I'm pretty comfortable with the punches/kicks. I guess it's the ground game/submission holds and defensive counters I'm worried about.

I may crack and pick it up this weekend since I get paid on Friday.

Oh and here is something else to think about.  I wasn't comfortable with the ground game either.  So my first fighter I made him a terrific boxer/striker and a good enough wrestler to escape the ground game.  So you could do the same thing.  Learn the moves to get OUT of the ground game and keep the fight on your feet.  I did this with very good success.

Now my second fighter I'm so curious about the ground game that I've gone completely opposite.  Great speed and just enough striking to keep me out of trouble on my feet, but I look to go to the ground immediately with him.

There are so many strategies you can employ.

I printed out the gameplay controls from Gamefly. Hopefully they'll become more familiar if I have instant access to them.

Not sure if you are aware of it, but from within the fight you can pause at any time and open up controls (I think) and it should open right to the page that is relevant to your current position in the fight and list the moves that you can perform.  I'm assuming you would pause anyway to read your list.

You can also thumb back and forth to the different control lists if it doesn't open to the right one.

Finished up my second career with my lightweight, Hank Salazar.  Mediocre record of 24-16.  Hank really struggled mid-career and had several 3 loss streaks that would drop him from rank 12-14 down to 20.  By the time I got my head around what I really wanted him to become he only had a year left on his contract.  I made a hard push to get him a shot, but two losses in a row to the 7th and 8th ranked fighters pretty much put that to rest.  He finished his career with a 2nd round KO of Rich Clementi who was fighting in his 77th(!) fight.

He's a 73 overall BJJ fighter.  I played this entire career on advanced.

One of the signs of a good game for me is how emotionally involved you get with the characters.  I felt like I let Hank down and he could have been so much more had I focused on certains things at the right time.

Think I'll create myself as a light-heavy next.

I just picked up a rental copy from the store, so we'll see how it goes.  Honestly, I don't think I'm into it enough to attempt to deal with these controls, (The diagrams in the instruction book showing all the crazy analog stick spins made me LOL) but I'm going to give it a shot.

Very much digging other games at the moment too, though, so my frustration tolerance is going to be low.

Careful, I heard that Ted is a dick.

Let me know if you want to try it out online.  You too, D.

Are you serious? I've been going through the tutorial in the demo and studying the gameplay controls from Gamefly just so I could kick your ass online Wink.

I have a question about the practice mode. Does it just allow you to perform offensive moves on the CPU character, meaning the CPU just stands there, or can you set it up so that the CPU performs offensive moves so that you can practice defensive moves too?

I may have to hold off one more day since Toys R Us is offering a $10 gift card with the purchase of UFC Disputed starting on Sunday. I can then use the $10 gift card towards the purchase of Virtua Tennis 2009.

Practice mode?  Are you talking about the sparring in career or the training camp in career?

In sparring you treat it like a real fight because the better you do the more points you get to distribute among your techniques.

In training camp you are assigned specific moves or strikes to pull of and if you do so you get points towards the next level in that discipline (boxing, judo, etc).

I'll have to look at the menu.  Is there a straight up practice mode?

Oh and study hard.  Wink

Jake and I had a fight that went to decision last night.  His 85 created guy vs my 73 rated submission specialist.  The first fight I submitted him in 20 seconds lol.

So then I went in just trying to work on grappling in such, but still trying to win.  I wanted to see if I could do it without trying a submission.  He took the fight 30-27 on all cards, but it was a really good fight.

I could have sworn that I saw a "Practice" option on the demo menu, but it wasn't accessible.

I'm really excited about playing online. Are you still having no problems with lag?

There is the tiniest bit of jitters, but it either goes away or I am concentrating so hard on my position and opponent that I really don't notice it after the first few seconds.  If it is there it is really easy to adjust to.  I'm like you...lag really really bothers me, but this game's slight lag doesn't for some reason.  If anything it affects how the game looks, but it has not bothered my gameplay once.

Thanks for showing me a little of the ropes today, Ted!  I'm enjoying the matches more than I thought I would, even though my game is still quite a bit random, which is caused about half because I don't know the real moves and positions of UFC and half because I'm still not sure how to execute some things.

Definitely want to play some more during my rental period, though!

Here is that cool .gif I mentioned:

There's a practice mode option when you go into the tutorial menu. You can set the CPU opponent do to a bunch of different things, including just standing there. I'm finding this very helpful in practicing my moves.

North South!  North South!

Ha ha... the fist vid I watched of this game looked like a homoerotic manual for face-to-genital contact (not that there's anything wrong with that), but the more I hear and watch about it, I like the specificity and unpredictability of the combat, though I'm no UFC fan.  But then I read reviews saying that shouldn't dissuade me either.  Like I need another game to get into!  This is like November of 2004 all over again.

Mostly, if Web likes it, I'm afraid I might like it, because more and more I am thinking that we are the same person. Smile

This game earned me some bad parenting demerits, it seems.

So, my kids (6 & 3) were really smacking into each other a little while ago, more than my wife had ever seen them do.  After pulling them apart, she asked them what they were doing and they answered that they were Ultimate Fighting.

I got a phone call. BoxingOuch

I've moved on to Expert level and it's a whole different game.  Believe it or not, the action has slowed way down since the CPU reaction time is so much quicker.  I have to really think about my attack and mix up my game.  I also am more defensive minded than ever.

The game just keeps getting better.

I win about half my fights on expert.

I just started my career mode, and man is the interface/loading clunky.    They really need to work on that for future titles.

Had my first one-strike KO in my third bout, taking out the CPU in 15 seconds during one of those last minute substitution fights that pop-up.  I had reduced stamina for it too, so I guess my guy figured he'd better not waste any time!

Sparring seems awkward in that I seem to get more points by simply whaling on the dude, rather than trying to perform the suggested moves.  Is that right?

You are absolutely right about the interface.

It might seem like you get more points for whaling, but I think you will do better if you strike as well as defend.  You may be able to out slug your partner one series and not the next.  The sparring partner is sort of a clone of the guy you are going to face.  And it seems to me his skill rises and falls according to that.  So one series he is awful and then for the next fight he seems unbeatable.

You and he both earn points for everything you successfully do.  Strike, kick, elbow, takedown, transition to better position, ground strike, knockdown, knockout, submit attempt and submit.   BUT also sprawl and blocking his transitions.  You can win the whole spar and get max points by just blocking his transitions on the ground.

Remember you get the same points for winning by 1 as winning by 50 so the spar is a great way to work on you defensive game.  Score just enough to win the spar and take the points.  Also use it to size up your next match and figure out what his weaknesses are.  I usually spar the first week after a fight just to size up the next opponent and see what I'm getting into.

Date Posted: 06-17-2009 at 9:44am
Well, I learned your first point the hard way, as my partner kicked my butt in two sparring sessions before a fight, and then I got my first loss in the fight itself.  And then the dude beat me in the re-match, so I went from 5-0 to 5-2. :(

I was cruising along always picking the highest ranked fighter on offer for matches, but I may have outpaced myself.

I'm keeping this one, BTW, (Was on the fence for a while, largely simply because there are a whole bunch of other games out now that I'm really enjoying a lot), so I should be around for some future cards.
