For the FIRST time in my life I had a console die on me. My Xbox displayed one red light in the bottom-right corner with the E74 error message. Luckily it's still under warranty, but it looks like I won't be playing Madden 10 this weekend.

Yeah, it's dead. The E74 is a common issue and is covered by the 3-year warranty.

Yes, more FSX for the next few weeks.

Amazed you made it as long as you did. I had to have gone through 3 or more myself and I baby my consoles. Anyway sorry for your loss, would try to bring you over to the darkside but I know that is futile. Guess you could always break out the Wii and let Christmas come early for the kids.

These things must be a total crap shoot.  I tried to baby my 360, but my wife will play a game or watch a movie and then go out and leave the thing running for 4 hours or more.  I come home and its been on all day.  Still chugging away.  I gotta say the thing is as loud as a jet sometimes, but it keeps going.

I'm shocked that it happened because I also baby my consoles and still own these still-working consoles:
  • Commodore VIC-20
  • NES
  • Sega Genesis
  • Playstation
  • Two PS2s
I never play my Xbox for more than 2-hours at a time and keep it well ventilated, so I thought I'd avoid any heat-related issues - guess I was wrong.

I'm so tempted to go buy the Arcade console. It seems like you're guaranteed a Jasper with those.

Some people think the new dashboard update is causing the problem with older Xbox consoles. It did happen to me the first time I played my Xbox after the update. Hmmm....

Sorry to hear, Jason.  And bad timing for you.  I'm on my second, but my launch console lasted a long time as far as these crappy pieces of engineering go.

I was under the impression that was true for the UK, but I did exactly that a couple of months ago when my Elite died and didn't get a Jasper.

It does seem like a crapshoot, though.  My first 360 ran merrily for a couple of years before I traded it in, but my Elite barely made it a year even though it was used less.  Like you, Jason, I'd never had a console die on me before.

Here's the dope;http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/qna/927749.html?qid=48176

I will buy another ASAP if my Elite craps the bed,and let the refurb POS MS sends back be a second unit for another room.

Of course, with the price drop to 299 next week on Elites',I may just get another of those.

So, they'll replace my unit with a refurb instead of repairing it? If so, that kinda pisses me off because I took great care of my system and don't want some sh*tty one in return.

The Arcade units with 512MB of onboard memory are built with the Jasper chipset. The SKU is XGX-00055. I may have to look for one.

Sorry to hear that, Jason.  No wonder MS's hardware sales are remaining fairly constant!  Those Evil Geniuses...  Evil Smile

I have my fingers crossed, but my Elite is still running okay.  I'm sure I just jinxed myself...

That stinks big time!  I think I have gone through three 360s by now.  I bought the Best Buy extended warranty for $20 after I had to replace my first one.  That has saved me a lot of headaches.

Use it as another media extender in your home network.
The 512MB is so the non-HDD units can run the NXE dash.

That raises a question from me. I'm going out tonight and will pick up a new Xbox if they have the latest revision, so what happens if NXE Dash is installed on the 512 of onboard memory and I attach my old hard drive which also has it. I'm thinking I should be able to delete from my hard drive and free up space. I also like the idea of being able to use the Xbox without the drive attached.

The new DVD drive much quieter than the old one and seems to load games quicker...maybe I won't need a bigger hard drive for loading games after all. Some other unexpected benefits are a much smaller power brick and less-mushy d-pad on the new controller.

I connected my hard drive this morning and it seems like the NXE Dashboard loads from the onboard memory (which is what I prefer), but I'm not sure if a copy of the NXE Dashboard is still on my HD wasting space.

Now I just need my copy of Madden to arrive from Amazon (fingers crossed that it arrives tomorrow).

Interesting survey by Gameinformer

http://consumerist.com/5338852/xbox-360-failure-rate-is-542-percent-game-informer-finds - http://consumerist.com/5338852/xbox-360-failure-rate-is-542-percent-game-informer-finds

http://consumerist.com/5338852/xbox-360-failure-rate-is-542-percent-game-informer-finds - Xbox 360 Failure Rate is 54.2 Percent, Game Informer Finds

The http://consumerist.com/tag/xbox-360/ - Xbox 360 breaks five times as often as its closest failure-prone competitor, the PlayStation 3, a print edition-only http://gameinformer.com/default.htm - Game Informer survey found.

The poorly manufactured, http://consumerist.com/tag/red-ring-of-death/ - red ring of death -prone console has a 54.2 percent failure rate, compared to 10.6 percent for the PS3 and the Wii's 6.8 percent.

The magazine surveyed nearly 5,000 readers to get the data. And while the 360's rate is alarmingly higher than the others, it's still bafflingly low because it blows the mind to imagine that 45.8 percent of the consoles have not broken. Also, Microsoft's numbers are inflated because 360s are used the most of the three consoles. Results said 40.3 percent of 360 owners use the console three to five hours a day, compared to 37 percent of PS3 owners. Meanwhile, the plurality of Wii owners (41.4 percent) play their consoles less than an hour a day.

Microsoft also seized the gold medal for unhelpful customer service, taking nearly a month to repair or replace a console, while Nintendo and Sony stuck closer to a week. Only 37.7 percent of Microsoft customers found the company's customer service was "very helpful," compared to 51.1 percent fo Sony and 56.1 percent for Nintendo.

The most shocking number from the survey — and frightening from a consumer perspective — is only 3.8 percent of Xbox 360 owners said they'd never buy another Xbox because of hardware failure.

My repaired Xbox arrived back at my house today, so the entire process took just about 1.5 weeks. I did receive my console back and not a refurbished unit, which I'm very happy about. I just tested it out and it seems to be much quieter now too. I wonder what they replaced inside the console and if it has "Falcon components" now.

It's still a Zephyr. I guess they use a new/quieter cooling system now.

I had a freeze during Zombie Apocalypse on Saturday night.  Today when I got home at lunch my son informed me that the machine RRoD'd with a General Hardware Failure code.  I tried to get it to work for a few minutes, but nothing.  Went to investigate the issue on the internet and just now powered it up again and it is working again, but I have to think it is only short matter of time.

How do I go about sending it in for warranty repair?

Sorry to hear, Ted.

They actually walk you through it pretty well online:

http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/registerdevice.aspx?step=repair

I set everything up that way and they actually updated me frequently by phone in addition to by web.

Good luck!

EDIT: E74?  That's what mine was.  You get the three years on that too.

Not E74, it didn't display a code.  Quadrants 2, 3, and 4 were lit.  Quadrant one unlit.  The diagram said General Hardware Failure.

That's the classic RROD then.  Covered for three years.  I got my launch system fixed a couple years back but then it fell out of warranty again and re-crapped a couple weeks ago.  Bought a new Arcade unit.

Sorry to hear that Ted. I did everything online through the link that Derek provided. It was very easy to do and you can track each stage of the process online. Mt entire turnaround was about 1.5 weeks, but like Slumber, I bought a new arcade unit and sold my repaired unit on Craig's List for $140 with my old controller.

Ted,

The only thing you'll need is a box to ship it in. You'll be able to print a pre-paid label right from the web site and then just drop it off at UPS. It'll ship back in different box from Microsoft. I held onto the box mine was shipped back with in case I ever need it again.

360 just arrived.  They sent me a different 360 than the one I sent in.  They also sent me a 1 month Live card.

So I got a different refurbished 360 or a new 360?

The plate on the back has a "Service Date 2009-08-29".  Not a Mfct Date....a service date.

If it uses your old power supply, then it's a refurb. Also, my old Xbox 360 came back with a Service Date of when it was repaired.

My Elite had a mild heart attack today.Blacked out during a MW2 firefight with 3 flashing red rings.
Powered down and back up and it came to life.
Knowing I was on borrowed time, I made sure to eject my game and pack up the power brick and cables and headed to Gameflop to trade her in while still kicking.

I've wanted a Jasper unit for a while,so I flipped the 'ol girl for 70 bucks and traded iNfamous for the PS3 for 20 bucks and got an Arcade unit.
Slapped my HDD on and I'm chugging right along.
Love the smaller brick and even quieter box.Surprised at the 512mb of onboard memory.

Yes, the new Arcade units come with 512mb even though the box shows 256mb. You'd think Microsoft would want to advertise the extra onboard memory. I'm hoping Microsoft finally go it right with the Jasper units and from what I've seen and heard, they may have.
