I only played 2 games, but here are some quick thoughts:

-Not much to get 'excited' about.  It's basically last year's game, with tweaks.  I'm not saying that this is a bad thing or anything, but IMO, there is no 'thrill' to anything new.

-I had several of those one hop drives to the outfielder in the two games that in last year's version would go by the fielder.  All were caught.

-Out of the box (default sliders) it seemed to be tuned more realistically than last year's game...more foul balls and balls pitched in general

-This might just be me, but I don't like the catchers calling the game idea.  I think that belongs soley in the realm of the player.  Sure, you can shake off the calls, but then you feel like you are doing something 'wrong.'

-I *do* like how each pitch has a confidence meter this year.  If you don't use pitches, and/or don't use them effectively early in the game, your 'confidence' in the pitch goes down, making them harder to use later on.  To me, this is the most fun new addition.  In my second game, Mussina lost all confidence in his knuckle curve, and by the third-fourth inning I was hardly throwing it at all.  It sucked that then my arsenal was cut by a pitch, but I thought it simulated pitchers not 'having' certain pitches for a game very well.

-As a weird side note and as a combination of the above two points, if you tend to use nothing but what the catcher calls, he will generally not call for you to use a lot of your pitches, causing a confidence loss in ones you don't throw.  I don't know if this is a weird two game anomaly that I saw, but it seems like another reason why you should ignore your catcher.

-The throwing meter for fielders is very subtle in effect.  It's there and it works, but the effect of it is far less noticeable than say, MVP's throw meter.

-There are new baserunning controls. To me, they are not better or worse than the old method.  Just different.

-A little too early to state this definitively, but the 'reward' for guessing pitch type and location seems to be toned down this year.

-There is some chop after batter balls, when the screen transitions.  I don't know if this is the source of what people are calling lag and/or slowdown, but IMO it doesn't affect gameplay at all, or my ability to field.  It is there and annoying, though.

I'm thinking MLB 2K7 (360), Mets of course.

I'll keep on playing MLB '06 on the PSP for a little while longer at least.

I got The Show today,I have 2K7 coming for Xbox via Gamefly.
I am using/updating a roster for MVP 05 Xbox and still playing MVP06 Xbox as well.
There wasn't enough "new stuff" to warrant keeping MVP 07 as the jumbled rosters and much poorer graphics make me want to play last years'.

This will be the first time ever to play as the worst team in the game (Pirates are rated 30th). Now I could cop out and play on pro but I will take my lumps and play it on All-Star.

First game, first inning and two passed balls. I laughed a little but have not seen one since, nor did I reach for a slider upon seeing such a travesty.

Now Is it me or is there no way to change the angles when fielding?  It just feels a little low but nothing I can't get used to. I will miss the zone batting so classic batting will have to suffice. I do appreciate the ability to hit (A) to skip cut scenes and pre pitch/batting motions when I choose to.

Now for a useless rant that does not have much impact on a baseball game but what the heck.  Honestly I never thought rain drops could get uglier then what was in NCAA07. I was wrong. Guess we will get next gen weather effects...  next generation. :)

P.S.  Memo to 2Ksports, 32 degrees or freezing = snow   I was thwarted in seeing the white stuff when I set it to -5 and rainy. Of course the rain looks like icicles falling from the sky so.....  Embarrassed

Nope.  Classic is pretty much the same as MVP05 (timing based).  Press button and by holding up/down/left/right you can assist with the style of hit (grounder/pop/push/pull).

I refuse to use the analog swing because it has never felt right.

Pitching is the same as last year (same three options).

MLB 2K7... it's got some problems (like Joe Morgan announcing where the catcher is setting his target when you're playing ONLINE) but it's interesting and crazy beautiful at times.  If season mode isn't downright broken I'm fairly psyched to dig in.

Had to edit that. Wink Of course I am usually into the second batter while they are talking about things "before the first pitch."

The game is a looker I will give it that.  Two things that caught my eye was the mountain backdrop at Coors field and the fountains at KC.

Fielding just seems less enjoyable without the throwing meters. MVP spoiled me I guess. The more I play with the classic batting the more I am considering trying the analog swing again. I keep trying to move the L-Stick as if I was zone batting, which of course causes issues in hitting ground balls on low pitches, at times when I need to pop one out in the outfiled to move a runner, just to give one example.

For the record, I have stuck with my OOTP league, and we're in the second season.  I definitely have more free time this year.  But, if you guys think I'm not reliable enough, I certainly understand, and I'm cool with it.  Lord knows I've given you reason...  I won't be upset if you don't want me "in."

Thanks for letting me in.  I had great fun playing with you guys.  I'll just have to do better at making time to play, and hopefully I'll be able to!

I played my first two games of MLB 07 The Show and came away with mixed feelings.

On the positive side, the fielding controls feel much better and first the first time, I feel as though I'm controlling my infielders. I like how the outfielders "lock onto" the ball when you get them in position (just like in MVP) and I'm thrilled that an "Assisted" baserunning option was finally added.

On the negative side, the slowdown is really bothering me and the graphics don't look as sharp as last year. I've unsuccessfully tried using different fielding views (high and low both suck) and even tried using the behind-the-pitcher camera to see if it would eliminate the slowdown. It's a shame because it's ruining an otherwise excellent game.

I just listed my copy of MLB 07 for http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y05Y3800766Y8979629/103-1118723-1437422 - sale on Amazon.com . The slowdown and graininess of 07 was just so bad when compared to MLB 06. I played back-to-back games of MLB 07 and MLB 06 to compare the two and couldn't believe what a step backwards 07 took in frame rate and graphics.

What a damn shame Angry.

It was horrible on my slim PS2 connected with component cables to my widescreen HDTV and was slightly better on my older PS2 connected to a 32" standard TV through an S-video cable. I'd much rather save the money and play 06 which looks far better than 07 on both of my TV's.

Web,

I got it on 9 out of 10 plays and couldn't force myself to accept it when a perfectly smooth MLB 06 was still sitting on my self. It's a shame because I was starting to get the hang of the new baserunning controls and really enjoyed the enhanced fielding controls.

One other thing that I noticed: The MLB series always seemed to have this line that ran across the middle of the screen and in this years version, that lower area always seemed to be very grainy and pixelated. It's hard to explain, but I'll see if I can find a screenshot somewhere. Has anyone else noticed this?

Well there is always The Biggs...  Have not heard anything about that game for quite some time.  Honestly MLB 2K7 is not bad once you tweak it a little (I find it a bit too heavy on HR's myself). In theory, after reading the manual the classic batting is pretty similar to zone batting, without calling it zone batting.  While the up/down can influence the type of hit they describe that for the optimum result in a swing, aiming toward where the ball is would be beneficial.

I think it said something like if you have a right handed hitter and the ball was pitched up and away, moving the L-Analog stick Up and to the Right would be the optimum swing.

Keep the PS2 for the baseball game and get a 360 for what is to come this fall. I really think this is the breakout year for next gen football games. First NCAA/MADDEN to simultaneously release on the PS3 & 360. Plus the APF2K8 game from 2Ksports.

That is crazy that the Show ran so bad for you...it is pretty much rock solid for me and looks as least as good as 06.
The gameplay is much improved with hit variety,AI logic, etc.
As a long time MVP guy,I was underwhelmed with last years' Show, but this years' game is quite good.
I will be playing both games this season.

On a side note,I have played MLB2K7 on Xbox and while it doesn't seem broken, like last years' game,it doesn't hold up to the Show or MVP.

I don't understand how The Show can run fine for some people and have so many issues for others - it's not like I'm super-sensitive to framerate issues either. What's worse is that I had the game run bad on two different PS2's. I though about holding onto it in case Sony released some sorta update but will settle for 06 for now.

I am using a really new slimline PS2 and playing over Monster component cables connected to a Sony Wega CRT HDTV.
Maybe it has something to do with newer versus older or worn disc drives?
I can hear the disc whirring in the PS2,moreso than other games-perhaps it has to read more from the disc or some such.

MLB 07 actually played better on my older PS2 (10/2001) connected with a Sony S-Video cable to a 32" standard TV than it did on my slim PS2 (12/2004) connected with a Sony component cable to my widescreen Wega HDTV. I've also never had any problems with either of my PS2's playing any other game.

Hi Jason,

I have to agree with you about MLB 07 The show.  The gameplay is improved over last year, but they really screwed up the grpahics and the stuttering is really annoying (I have a big old ps2).

I dont know why they had to go ahead and mess these 2 things up since it was perfect last year.  The gameplay is good, but whenever I play the show now, I always go back to 'WHY THE F**k Did they mess this up!'.

I'm actually glad to see that someone else feels the same way. What made the problem worse for me was that I still have my copy of MLB 06 to compare with 07.

I like and prefer the way that the ball comes off of the bat in 07 and mentioned that in another post when the first videos were released. It's just a shame that SCEA couldn't eliminate the stuttering while implementing it.

I have MLB 06 too and I keep putting it in to compare with 07.  07 is so ugly when you put in 06 that it makes me not even want to play the game.  Maybe they were concentrating too much on the ps3 version and just screwed over the ps2 version in the graphics department.

I think Sony had good intentions for MLB 07 (PS2) but lacked the time to tighten it up due to simultaneously developing the game for the PS3. I hope they at least did a good job on the PS3 version. I'm very interested in seeing how the PS3 version looks and plays as this game will play a big role in determining whether I buy a PS3 or Xbox 360.

The Show '07 has been quite satisfying so far.  The new "Road to the Show" (a version of "Career Mode") is entertaining for all the reasons cited http://slumberlandgames.blogspot.com/2007/02/shift-is-on.html - here .  I've got a shortstop/OF (a rare but occasional type) trying to become the 25th man on the Phillies and though it's frustrating at times, it's the good kind of frustration.  Updating the rosters didn't take much time at all on my old PS2, unlike with the 2K series wherein changing a single player can take minutes.

Finally got some time with it...  In the little I've played, I haven't even noticed the "stutter" or "slowdown" that many folks are talking about.  I'm connected to a 32" standard TV with RCA cables, and an "older" PS2, for what it's worth.  It could be happening, but it just really hasn't caught my attention yet.  I do agree that the graphics are a little worse.  On the first hit I gave up, the cut scene had the runner walk right through the first baseman, LOL...

Hopefully, I'll continue to have good luck with the framerate.  So far, though, it seems like the same game as last year, which is a good thing...

I'm now convinced that I'm a framerate-whore LOL.

Glad you're enjoying it Kevin. Keep the comments coming.

Road to the Show, baby!  I LOVE LOVE LOVE this mode!  It reminds me of how I felt when I first played ASB 2003's expansion mode - how innovative, and long overdue!

I'm a AA closer in the Pirates system.  I had a very good spring, yet only got a AA offer, although my BAA's against were too high.  I'm getting ready to embark on my minor league campaign here in a few.  I'm only 22 (in game), so I'm prepared to pay my dues...  I love how the catcher calls the game.  I love how I have to field my position (cut-offs, cover first, back up home plate, cover the plate on a PB/WP, etc.).  I love the training system and how I develop my pitcher.  I love how I can fast-forward to my next appearance.  Getting through multiple years shouldn't be too big of a challenge, and I rarely have the patience or the time for that in most sports games.

I've heard about the lack of transactions (I haven't really checked it out yet), but since I'm only focused on my guy, it doesn't concern me too much in this mode.  I'm also not seeing any stutter; at least any that I recognize.

So far, I'm having a blast, just like last year...

More to come, although unfortunately for me, Dan Clarke gets to do the Gameshark review...  Low man on the pole, LOL...

A couple of follow-up notes...  I'm actually in AAA, not AA, so I feel better about that after my Spring performance.  I'm into May (9 IP, 6 H, 6 SV, 7K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA) with the Indianapolis Indians.  We're 12-14, and in 3rd place.  The parent club is also in third at 14-14.  Might be time for me to go up a level in difficulty.  I think I'll give it to the end of May.  Don't get me wrong; I've been in trouble on the mound twice, but I got a key "K" once and induced a DP with the bases loaded another time.  Nail-biting moment for sure!

There haven't been any trades or free agent signings in the bigs so far, but several teams have shuffled their players around in between the majors and between AAA and AA in the minors.

More to come...

During each appearance, there's a "challenge" system.  Depending on the circumstances, you might be given a goal to complete, and successfully completing goals helps to boost your training points.  I like the idea, but the implementation is sometimes wonky.  For example, we're up by 3 in the bottom of the ninth, and I've already gotten 2 outs.  A goal will pop up telling me to strike out the third batter.  Why a strike out?  I could see needing a strike out with the bases loaded and one down, or something, but when closing the deal, I'm just looking for any out, not a strike out.

I guess my point is I don't like how sometimes the goals don't coincide with what you need to accomplish in the game.  That said, I think it's a fun idea.

Kev, would you be up for an online game sometime?

Sure, Web...  I have to find my ethernet cord first, though!  Smile

I may not be much of a challenge.  I've been doing a whole lot more pitching than hitting.  Maybe this weekend?  What's your schedule like?

Also, is there anything special I need to know to set up an account for "The Show?"

I actually haven't gone online with 07 yet, but I can't imagine that you have to do anything special over 06.  I've actually been playing a lot more of 2k7 lately too, as I'm still embroiled in a constant tweakfest with that game, so it may take an inning or two to get re-familiarized with the controls for me as well.  I still don't have a ps2 headset, though, so we'll have to play in silence.

How about...Saturday night?  Some time between 10pm edt and 12pm edt?

I had to call it a night with the 'tweakfest' that 2K7 turned out to be.  I need simpler sliders, like "hit less home runs" and then the game would do what it needed to do behind the scenes to bring that to fruition.  There are just so many moving parts with the 2K7 hitting sliders... it really was work more than play, and had a poisonous way of demanding my attention as if THIS WOULD BE THE TIME everything finally fell into place (which it never would), and then there'd be a game that I always enjoy like Oblivion sitting on my shelf, unplayed, wondering why I spent all my time with that sexy floozy who was only going to string me along and hurt me.

Just curious, were you using the swing stick or classic batting? I found a way to trim down the home runs using classic batting and just making one of those house rules that I do not press up. I treat it as if I was zone batting using the left and right to push and pull the ball and down for the low pitches. Of course playing with a team like the Pirates helps.

Hey Web,

I'm signed up and connected for MLB 07 online...  My name is "KMosley."  I'll probably be in the Central01 room around 10.

Kevin, I'm *SO* sorry for missing you.  The kids were up really late on Sat, the wife was out, it was a long day, and I just forgot. :(

I apologize, and I hope you'll give me another shot sometime!

No sweat...  Crap happens!

I'm leaving for Florida on Friday, so it's a busy week for me.  Maybe when I get back, we'll set something up...

Take Care,

Kevin
