College Hoops 2K8 Sneak Peek

By Christian Grant-Fields

IMAGE%20DESCRIPTIONCollege Hoops 2K8

The guys at 2K invited us to their PR studio yesterday in New York’s Union Square to preview College Hoops 2K8. We were all about College Hoops 2K7 in the Dime office, so were fired up to see this year’s version of the game.

Slated to drop in November for Xbox 360, Playstation 2 and PS3, the version we saw yesterday was only 70 percent finished, but you could still get a solid handle on how the final version will look and play.

The controls from last year basically stayed the same, but the guys at 2K have added in a feature called “Maximum Passing.” Basically by holding down a trigger button (it will vary depending on which system you have) and pressing another button you can control which type of pass your player throws. So if you’re playing as UCLA, you can throw those legendary overhead outlet passes with Kevin Love.

In addition to Maximum Passing, a feature called “The 6th Man Advantage” will be introduced. This feature allows the crowd to directly help your team’s performance. The better you play, the more your fans back you up. You can just imagine what Cameron does for the Dukies in this game…

IMAGE%20DESCRIPTION

The game has given all of the major arenas graphic facelifts. Now, the Carrier Dome’s complete with the blue drapes that cover the rest of the football field and the huge “S” that the Orange now have on their floor.

Gamers can now create their own plays and keep their shooting percentage up with the help of the “Active Hot Zones.” Imagine cell phone bars under each player - the closer you are to their range the more bars you’ll have. Tennessee’s Chris Lofton will have full service from beyond the three-point line with UConn’s Hasheem Thabeet’s range will be limited to the paint.

And then, after all of that, there is a special mode on the game where you can match your skills in basketball’s most famous drills against NCAA legends. Always thought J.J. Redick was overrated? Try and take him out in a college three-point shootout.

It going to be hard to balance work and leisure at the Dime Headquarters once this game hits the streets. My prediction: yours truly will reign supreme in the office on the sticks as I did in ’07.

Fact Sheet

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – 2K Sports, the sports publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced today new features for College Hoops 2K8, the best rated college basketball game for five straight years and best selling college basketball video game series this past season.

A brand new feature for College Hoops 2K8 is the All-American Training Challenge, delivering an exciting series of passing, shooting, and defensive tests against some of college basketball's best former student-athletes. Also included in College Hoops 2K8 is the 6th Man Advantage, which brings a new level of interactive atmosphere to the college basketball experience.

"This year, the development team has added more remarkable new features in College Hoops 2K8 than ever before," said Greg Thomas, President of Visual Concepts, a 2K Sports studio. "Having a compelling and entertaining atmosphere is essential for a college basketball title and the 6th Man Advantage adds a new gameplay element that allows gamers to tap into the crowd's energy to benefit their team. With the All-American Training Challenge, gamers will go head-to-head with some of the best college basketball student-athletes in recent history in unique practice drills that provide a fun challenge while improving your College Hoops skills at the same time."

In the All-American Training Challenge, players will be able to improve their game skills by competing in passing, shooting, and defensive tests against former college basketball standouts like Mike Conley Jr. of Ohio State, Julian Wright of Kansas, Glen "Big Baby" Davis of LSU, Alando Tucker of Wisconsin, Al Thornton of Florida State, J.J. Redick of Duke, and College Hoops 2K8 cover athlete, Greg Oden of Ohio State. Gamers can progress through the challenge drills against these great players while tracking their best times and highest scores in the game. With multiplayer support for up to four players, gamers can compete against their friends to see who has the best College Hoops skills.

College basketball fans will truly feel the benefit of playing in front of a frenzied crowd—be it at home or in a neutral tournament venue—with the 6th Man Advantage where the energy of a team's fans can motivate a team to play harder and with more confidence. During a game, the 6th Man Meter measures the current energy and excitement level of the crowd. By scoring often, playing good defense, and raising the excitement level of the crowd, the 6th Man Meter will rise. Once the meter is full, the home team will gain the advantage of playing with less fatigue for a brief period while the opposing team will start to lose confidence in their playing ability. The 6th Man Advantage delivers a realistic element with how a great crowd can inspire their team to victory.

For five straight years, the College Hoops 2K series has been the top rated college basketball game on any console, and College Hoops 2K8 looks to continue that legacy with advanced next generation visuals and hundreds of new animations. With a wealth of new and innovative features, College Hoops 2K8 is set to continue its reign as the most authentic college basketball video game.

Hands on at Gamespot   -    Video

Passing has been changed up in College Hoops 2K8. Now, in addition to the default passing system, you can select which kinds of passes you want to make by pressing the left bumper (on the Xbox 360) and a face button. You hit X for chest pass, A for bounce pass, Y for lob, and B for leading pass, which is really only effective when your target player is in motion. Getting used to these new passes will take some time, but certain moves are sure to be deadly weapons when used properly, such as the ability to bounce the ball underneath a tight defender, or to toss it over the hands of an outstretched opponent. Isomotion controls will also be controlled with the face buttons: B for crossover, Y for spin, and the shoulder buttons for hesitation moves.

The presentation in 2K8 has gotten some overhauls as well. First, big-time venues such as Kentucky's Rupp Arena have been built from the ground up with improvements to signage and more accurate placement of student sections. The game includes a bunch of new player animations, particularly on the defensive side, and new camera angles during stoppages in play add some nice variety to the game.

Naturally, the college basketball game comes after 2K's NBA series, and one of the nice things about that is the team behind the college game can take the best features from 2K and tweak or improve them for the college game. Remember the hot spots feature in 2K8--a cell-phone signal-like meter that indicates the favorable spots on the floor for your players to shoot from? That's been tweaked a bit in College Hoops 2K8 to simply indicate a player's proficiency at shooting from a certain range, no matter where he is on the floor.

One of the underrated features in 2K8 has to be the new 2K Share function. Here, you can create custom rosters, game-settings files, playbooks, legacy files, and even custom chants you've created with the built-in chant creator--then you save them and share them with your friends. We'll be counting down the hours until someone gets that first full NCAA roster online, which we can then use to get all the real player names in the game. You'll be able to search for files by gamertag and even rate files so that the best files will be readily available to everyone.

Now that I really like. No more having to worry about a memory card for rosters (my datel transfer kit had crapped out) - hopefully EA follows suit with NCAA09.

Say that you're getting owned by your archrival for the first half. You can't get your fast break together, you're getting punished on the offensive boards, and your opponent is draining threes on you all day long. You head into halftime in 2K8 and need to make some adjustments, right? This year, at halftime, you'll be presented with a laundry list of things you've done right (and wrong) during the first half. Most, if not all of the entries on the list can be addressed with game-plan slider adjustments. For example, if you're not getting enough offensive rebounds, you pump up the crash-boards slider; you can move up the defensive-pressure slider to get some hands in your opponent's face at the 3-point line; and you can pump up the fast-break slider to generate more chances on the break. Each time the computer decides that you've addressed a concern, it will check it off the adjustments list. Of course, you can game-plan all you want, but the execution will still be all up to you.

Another worthy addition!

Looking like March Madness will be limited to playing the demo. This one is looking good.

Yeah, this game cannot get here soon enough, even though I can only name like two college basketball players.

Outside of Tech and OU I can't really name many players. I used to be like Dick Vitale and could name the starting 5 for Montana State.

I just like playing with Northridge here in So. Cal since it's the only gym I've been in recently.  I love how they have damn near everyone's court exactly right.  Gotta love authenticity.

Exactly and they even take it a step farther and get the lighting of arena right. The darker arenas look dark and the lighter arenas light. They have been doing that since the first CH2K. 2ksports does a much better job with the little details.

2K Sports Unveils More New Features in College Hoops 2K8

PlayVision and Play Designer unveiled as innovative new features

New York, NY - October 30, 2007 - 2K Sports, the sports publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced more exciting new features for College Hoops 2K8, the #1 selling college basketball game last year* and the #1 rated college basketball game five years running**.

New to this year's edition of the 2K Sports' College Hoops series is PlayVision, allowing gamers to execute every play on the court to perfection. PlayVision draws out each play step-by-step, detailing where on the court to pass, move, and watch for a screen. Each step of the play is illustrated with a different graphic, making plays easy to execute with accuracy and precision. PlayVision also works when playing with two or more people on the same team by indicating where the gamers need to set up their players to execute the play.

"Among many other exciting new features this year, we focused on making plays easier to execute while also adding the ability to create your own types of plays. PlayVision and Play Designer work hand-in-hand to allow gamers to learn the fundamental movements of basketball plays and in turn enable users to get a much more realistic college basketball experience," said Greg Thomas, President of Visual Concepts, a 2K Sports studio.

With the all new Play Designer, gamers can create their own plays from beginning to end and customize their playbook. Gamers can determine where their players begin a play, tell each player what to do using numerous moves, and then bring in various types of defenses to test their plays against. Once created in Play Designer, any play can be executed during a game and seen on the court with PlayVision.

College Hoops 2K8, the best selling college basketball video game this past year* and best rated college basketball game for five years running**, returns this year with the deepest feature enhancements in the history of the franchise, advanced next generation visuals and countless new animations to deliver the most innovative and authentic college basketball video game experience to date.

College Hoops 2K8 will be available this fall for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system.

PlayVision is a great idea...  Most often, in basketball games, even after I've memorized a few plays, I divert back to Y-ball.  This should help, plus also help teach my son some fundementals better than drawing X's and O's can.  I'm definitely on board the bandwagon for this game!
