"Furthermore, our sources confirmed that EB Games revised its Canadian warranty policies during early 2007 for consoles solely due to the failure rate of the Xbox 360."

"As a result of the high failure rate of the Xbox 360, EB Games corporate nearly doubled the prices of its one-year, over-the-counter warranty. While the previous warranty would give a customer a brand new console in exchange for the broken one, the new policy now states that the customer will receive a refurbished console instead."

"The price increase and policy change wasn’t exclusive to only the Xbox 360, however, as it also applies to all other Sony and Nintendo consoles sold."

"Former EB Games worker Matthieu G. said that the failure rates for all other consoles were not high enough for the retailer to consider revising its policies, and guesses that most other console systems have a failure rate of less than one percent, including the PlayStation 3. Another EB Games manager, when asked if the store warranty was worth it, conceded that in the hundreds of Wii units sold at that location thus far, zero have come back as defective."

" No piece of technology, no matter how well designed, should be expected to completely free of failure. The key metric is whether or not a product falls within industry standards of acceptable failure rates – and from findings based off retailer-supported warranty returns, the actual rate of failures could be six to ten times greater than what Microsoft is letting on."

Here is a good 7 page thread on that very article.

So many things wrong with that article and it is not the first to make up fictional numbers out of the air, as if talking to a couple anonymous sources in Canada is more then enough to go by.

Video game journalism...  It's craptastic.

Point taken.

Is Dailytech not a reliable news source?  I know Anandtech is and they had the article linked on their news page.

I just go article by article now. Some sites are pretty consistent and others have certain editors who are not worth the bandwidth they use up, posting news.

Why is Microsoft still having so many problems with a console that is almost 2 years old?!?

I wish they'd release an updated premium unit with HDMI output and the 65nm CPU. The 30fps issue with EA's games has me leaning towards buying an Xbox 360 again, but I want Microsoft to fix the problems with the console first (and drop the price).

Something to ponder. Why are the Xbox Elite so hard to find these days?  not impossible mind you but much harder. On the flip side you will find numerous core units available.

To me, the core is widely available for people like myself who have a broken 360 but do not want to wait for a warranty unit, or unit out of warranty and they would rather pay for a new one then $140 to fix theirs. The core is really all you need since you have the HD, XBL stuff already, so basically you get a few extra cords and wired controller.

The Elite is hard to find because it seems to me MS is readying for a new model, either the 65nm, or they have a fix on the problem.  The Elite is the same tech as the other 360's: with larger HD and HDMI, etc. Eventually they have to plug the hole in the damn and start sending out units that last more then a year.  Usually you see a big surge when these revamped units are released, not the case here. I think MS is seeing that going with an even more expensive unit was not the best route, due to the competition and what is selling right now.

E3 is next week so might get a little better glimpse into what will be happening in the upcoming months on the hard/price drop end of things.

Good point. I keep forgetting that E3 is right around the corner. I'm getting anxious to play next-gen versions NCAA Football & NASCAR.

Tell you what.  I am already getting another 360 with an in-store warranty. So having a backup unit does me little. If you are willing to wait out the warranty return you can have that one.

You would still need a Hard Drive and XBL  (around $150)  but you can get used Hard Drives for less. I would even throw in the wired controller since I have a newfound love for the wireless. You also have a full year warranty after the repair.

Think of it as a gift of sanity, so you can move on to the next generation.  Then when you are ready you can plunge down the money for the PS3.

Brent,

That is VERY generous of you, but I wouldn't feel right accepting something like that. I really, really do appreciate the offer though.

It's your call because I have no need for a second 360.  You can always buy me a couple 360 games down the road if it would make you feel better. Tongue
