I totally disregarded this one until I saw that Gogamer is selling the PC version cheap.

I read some reviews and this statement caught my eye.

The multiplayer game plays just like the single-player game, but with all of the units being commanded by real, live players, the battles can vary wildly. There are nine multiplayer maps, many of which are taken directly from the single-player game. You can play with up to seven other players, each player commanding a specific ship, fleet, or squadron. The battles are all team-based, and you can choose to play as Japan or US forces. Each side has unique units, but they are still balanced. The maps aren't quite as balanced, though, with one side often starting at a significant disadvantage. Even then, sound tactics and good communication between teammates can easily give an underdog the upper hand in a battle. As with any multiplayer game, your enjoyment depends on the people you're playing with, but that goes double here because of the higher level of cooperation and strategy required in these battles.

That sounds like fun to me.  The game is consistently reviewed in the 7's with much praise given to the multiplayer.  I'm gameflying the 360 version and wondered if any of you guys might be interested in trying it.

I had some fun with it for a little while.  A few of the DSPers hooked up to play when it first came out.  It had some issues that kept me from keeping it, though.  Let me know what you think.

Played through a few missions last night.  The single player is a little boring, but I like the commanding of units, especially issuing orders to my flights from my aircraft carrier.  It is very tactical in that respect.  I'm interested in going online with this and seeing how the battles play out.

I tired it out a few times with DSP guys and also with KOFF guys.  What I remember about it is that first, some maps / missions were much better and more fun than others.  Also, every game took well over half an hour, and it wasn't unusual for a game to take over an hour or an hour and half, not least because the 'end game' could take forever as one or two ships left on the losing side could run and hide forever.

It was normal for me to end up getting destroyed relatively early, and then spend the rest of the time trying to convince whoever had control over any planes to let me get control of one. (a very cool feature, but only if the man in charge has enough mental energy left to pay attention to keeping his dead teammates happy).  Every game night ended up being only one round long because the game took so long, no one was ever up for more after the first was finally over.

There was a lot to like about it, but I found it to be pretty far the opposite of a casual game.  To  get much of anything out of it, I think it would require a dedicated group big enough to have full games every time, and everyone with enough of a handle on all the vehicles and the maps to really make it work.  And bring a book so that once you are out of commission you have something to occupy your time for the rest of the match.

Interesting insights, Zep.  What is KOFF?

When this first came out, I played the hell out of it.  Of course, we had a good room going, and interest eventually waned.  The SP was boring, but MP can be fun if you have a good group.

My problems with the games stemmed from a couple of things.

1) Many units -and pretty much all ships- tend to do better with the CPU controlling them than under direct player control.

2) The unit limit and refueling requirements of planes often make it a better game strategy to kamakazie them rather than attempting to return them to base.  This may not bother some folks, but it did me.

Still thought it was a decent game, though, but nothing great.
