Man I am in  a rut right now.  I need to cut down on how many games I play in a row because I think I get worn out.

No, I meant like last night where I played like 7 ot 8 straight games of NHL09 in a row in BAP.  I need to play some of my other games that I am neglecting.

What the heck, I will join in.  Just need to figure out what type of player my LW will be.

Why can't they have one like PUCKHOG THAT LIKES TO HIT.  Embarrassed

I think I am going to just stick with Power Forward.

Oh man, I know.  My soon-to-be-wife and I went on Tuesday night and it was great, then last night was a major bummer but a least that was only watched on TV.  Tonight my friend has great field level seats, so I'm hoping they get it in.  Although if it gets rained out and moved to, say, Monday... then all of a sudden we'll have coveted tickets to the last game at Shea.  If they miss the playoffs, that is.

If I wanted it easier as a sports fan I'd have picked the Yanks and Giants.

Decided to add a table in the first post with recent games.  I wonder if the matchups are totally random or if it tries to match you close to skill level.  Was surprised to see that we have played two Div 1 teams.

Updated our play table in the first thread.

We're definitely getting better and/or getting better matchups.

After going 3-20-1 we have gone 4-2-2 in the last 8. Clap

Lost live here too.

We won two out of two games tonight.

Grambo and I won a game in shootout after coming back from down 2-0.

Then Grambo, Web, and I started a game and the other team dropped.  So we got a 3-0 forfeit I guess.

That was a load of fun!  I can't wait to play again.

That first game was wild.  They had four against our two and were fairly organized.  We were down 2-0 with about 10 minutes to go in the game when Pavel Wang (yes, the famous Pavel Wang) tied it up after Ted fed him a perfect pass.  Then a couple of minutes later I passed to Ted in the slot and he lifted it over the goalie.  We were both imagining how pissed those other guys were.

After surviving me in the penalty box for the first minute of overtime, we went to a shootout.  I tanked my chance by losing the puck while skating in, and Ted had a nice try but the goalie saved it.  Luckily, our goalie held them scoreless until the famous Pavel Wang came through for us again.

Oh, and Ted was the #1 star.

Here's my bullsh*t response from EA technical support:

Hi,

Thank you for contacting EA Technical Support. I'm sorry to hear that you are still experiencing difficulties.

If you have performed all the basic troubleshooting steps but still not able to play the game, then this is usually an indication that the console is having difficulty reading the game disc. This could be for many reasons; usually this is because the game disc is damaged or unreadable but in some situations this can be the sign of a more serious issue with your console .

CHECK THE GAME DISK

1. If there are any noticeable scratches or smudges on the surface of the game disc, try to clean them off by using a non-abrasive cotton cloth. Note: Do not rub hard and do not rub in a circular motion as this could further damage the game disc.

a. If the game disc does not work in another system, this is a good indicator that the disc is damaged or defective. To acquire a replacement game disc you will want to refer to your manual for warranty information specific to your product.

The options we recommend for game replacement, if needed, are as follows. You may replace the game through the store where you originally purchased it, if that option is still possible. This is by far the faster way to replace your game with a new copy. If the store is no longer able to replace your game, you may then make use of the EA Warranty, found on the inside back of your game manual, or you may use this link: http://warrantyinfo.ea.com/ - http://warrantyinfo.ea.com/ .

If you choose to use the warranty, please read through the instructions carefully. If you have any particular questions regarding the policy, please use the Contact Us link as you have before, and choose Warranty in the Category drop down box to direct your question to the Warranty department of Electronic Arts.

If you have any other questions, then by all means feel free to let us know. You can also refer to our extensive Self Help Knowledgebase at http://support.ea.com/ - http://support.ea.com for common technical questions.

Thank you,

John

I really don't think it's my console. NHL is the only game I've ever had problems with and clearing the cache works for a while - it wouldn't work at all if it was my console or the NHL disc.

Also, it's happening to a lot of other people and was mentioned by the producer of the game as something that will be patched.

Now I'm really annoyed. I went to the Target near my house to return NHL 09 for another copy and they gave me a Gift Card for the total  ($64.19). I went over to the electronics department and they didn't have any copies. Like an idiot, I decided to drive to another Target 20 minutes away and they didn't have it either. I was really hoping to get another copy tonight so I could join you guys online.

Oy vey!  Finally meet up with Ted and Grambo and then have my first lockup with this game right upon receiving a pass.  I thought about killing time until the next match, but it was late and I'm getting up at 6:45 these days.  I will try and be on again tonight!  Quickly realizing that this might be the best thing in my library right now, even OTP with randoms (in which I always leave the headset plugged in but the volume all the way down).

Not sure why anyone would play offline be-a-pro when online is available.  I mean, real people are one thing, but I spend half the time offline catching a breather on the bench and waiting for my energy to fill back up.  Realistic, I guess, but not that cool.

I did the same for the first few games, until I realized that I could switch to the less-hardcore, "position lock" setting in the pre-game setup and at least play the other shifts for my position until my guy got on the ice.

That's what I do in the rare games I play offline bap.  Sitting on the bench was novel for awhile, but got old fast.

You do have the option of locking down the position (which let's you play with the players that replace you) or what I do which is leave my player out there the whole time.  I prefer playing the game over realism that makes me sit on the bench.

What the heck could be so different about your console?  Brent, Grambo, and Web all have Tiger with the patch and theirs are working.  I know a lot of people hate PC games because of the difficulty it can be to get games to work with unique hardware setups, but that isn't supposed to happen with consoles.

Have you tried going into your HDD and deleting all of the NHL 09 content and starting fresh with NHL 09?

I cleared my cache again and only loaded the game updates for Madden 09, NCAA Football 09 and NASCAR 09, and was able to play NHL again. I'm not going to install any more game updates and would like to try a club game either tonight or tomorrow night.

I also replied to EA Tech support and explained that a new disc did not solve the problem and that my console is working fine with EVERY other game I own. Their solution was for me to send my disc to them for replacement (I already tried another disc). My response was a complaint at the BBB.

I just Rock Band 2 today Derek.  Really impressed with the new songlist, and happy at how easy the conversion of my RB1 songs and downloads happened (and I like that they show album covers now on the songlist!).  And now I find out that a George Thorogood song is available next week - don't get much better than that!

Oh, back to on topic.  I would love to play some tonight if I can tear myself away from RB2 or Tales of Vesparia.  Oh hell, I scored two goals the other night - that should be enough to draw me back.

If Jason plays, can I check him even if he is on my own team?  Just want to make him feel at home playing with me and pretend it is Nascar.Smile

Kind of a frustrating night at the end there.  Seth I know it wasn't very fun playing that last team, but you can take solace in the fact that they are ranked 14th in the world right now.

Since you and Brent asked during the game and since it is hard to explain while we are trying to play I'll try to post some very basic ideas about what your positional responsibilities are as wingers and how we can do a better job of gaining the offensive zone.

-------------

Posted By: Slumberland
Date Posted: 10-04-2008 at 10:15am
That'd be good... I was having trouble absorbing some of that info on the fly.  One of my wing questions is that I'm not sure how far into the defensive zone to get... I see things happening near the net and want to get involved, but then if we get the puck back I'm not forward enough to get back into the offensive zone in a timely matter.

I just played some Mario Kart afterwards to settle down.  It worked.

That game-the-system deke shot thing is annoying as well.  I wonder if the devs think it is a problem or just how things should work.

Primarily, I guess I understand the need to reward players with skill upgrades and progression, but it seems sort of wrong for online, and a quick way to alienate more casual users.  I would rather there be a set number of points to distribute, and then it comes down to people playing the game well.  Going into a matchup against uber-players who also know the fake-the-goalie tricks... I mean hell, those guys would have beaten us probably 3-1 anyway without that nonsense, and it would have been much easier to feel good about.

I'll be at the Jersey Shore tonight in preparation for Chowder Fest tomorrow, so maybe I'll be back on tomorrow night.

So far I'm not at all discouraged playing with you guys.  I feel like I can play with any one of you in a two man game and we have a great chance at winning the game except when we meet high division teams (top 4 divisions) because they ALL seem to use the so-called exploits.  We just need to start learning to skate with 3 or 4 humans on the ice now.  The primary determination of success in that will be playing sound positionally.

It's still an arcade game and to try and play it like real hockey would be a waste of time and I don't have the knowledge to teach that anyway.  But NHL is still programmed to play like a basic game of hockey and if you use your computer teammates you will have an advantage because they play good positionally and know what to do with the puck.  Most of the teams below division 7  don't use their teammates, especially their d-men so it is easy to gain an advantage by doing so.

If you are using any camera other than classic or overhead I seriously think you are not going to be able to see well enough to pass and play a team oriented game.  This is because you can't see what is developing behind you.  I encourage you high and low camera guys to just tough it out with classic or overhead for 10 or 20 games.  I hated classic in BAP at first and now I can't play any other way.

Usually when we have 3 humans we'll all go forwards.  The fourth or fifth guys in will have to play D obviously.

So just to start let's just establish the #1 rule in each zone that will help us by improving our offense.  Hockey is a transitional game and everything we do is designed to generate offense.  Our defense is fine unless we are playing top teams and there isn't much we can do to stop them right now.

The number one rule in the defensive zone is do not bunch up and play jungle puck.  If there are more than two players on the puck or the puck carrier you are bunched up.  There should only be two players on the puck or puck carrier if there is a scrum for the loose puck.  Otherwise 1-1 play is the preferred defense.  You can go to assist your teammate if he has slowed our disrupted the puck carrier and you then become second man in to try and take possession.  Otherwise you should be blocking passing lanes and shooting lanes and keeping a sharp eye out for a turnover so you quickly transition into your position to start the attack.  When the puck is loose and heading behind the goal line in our zone and there is more than one player chasing it you are bunching up.  Bunching up usually wins us the puck, but we don't have an outlet to start our transition and get out of our zone.  Hockey is a transitional game and we need to make sure we have outlets to move the puck quickly out of our zone and onto the attack.

The number one rule in the neutral zone is head man the puck.  This means the skater furthest up the ice should be taking the puck into the zone.  This is usually the weak side winger (strong side is puck side, other is weak side).  So when we get the puck back look for the weak side winger.  The computer knows to post up high on the boards and do that.  As a human player you should be doing the same.  If you are on the weak side play between the mid boards and our blue line.  When we get the puck head up ice and look for the pass.  If you get up ice and no pass has arrive do not stop and stand there.  Cut along the blue line or circle to keep your speed up.  Standing will only get you checked and we'll turnover the puck at a bad time in a bad place.

The number one rule in the offensive zone is spread out into open ice and keep moving.  The puck carrier needs an outlet to pass to.  We should not crash the net with more than one player before the shot.  We should not crowd the slot with more than one player.  We should not just stand in front of the net or in the slot, stationary, and hope the pass gets through two or three defenders.  Movement opens up ice.  Movement creates scoring chances.  Movement scores goals.  Again the camera you use will determine how effective you can be.  If we were a team that could use the so-called exploits then low cameras are great because you can watch the goalie and abuse him.  But we're a bunch of journeymen types and we need to move and use each other to open up the chances.

Those are the three #1 rules.  They'll help us if we use them.  I'll try to post more if you guys are interested.  The #1 rule overall is this is for fun.  I don't want to turn it into something too serious.

Good stuff. Will try to absorb this and transfer it to my play.

I have a rule to add:

Thanks for the tips, Ted.  I am guilty of standing and stopping at the blue line when I find myself ahead of the puck, as well as camping in front of the net and not moving in the offensive zone.

As for that main goal exploit people are using, surely there's a way to lessen the chance of them getting that open of a look, right?  Is it possible to keep a body on those guys without playing chase-the-puck?

There may be.  Probably a combination of defensive settings with the d-pad, playing tight, and using the center as the primary backchecker since the d-men can't always be relied upon to stay with the low forechecker.

One doesn't always have to use the poke, lift stick, or hit buttons to knock a guy off the puck or disrupt him.  Just skating into him will quite often cause his animation to disrupt.  Hard to overcome habits, but it does work.

Remember, always keep the legs moving in the offensive zone.  No standing around Smile.

Was doing some searches on scoring strategy and came across this, regarding those exploit shots:

"Me and Jedi were playing online earlier today, and when we set the defensive strategy to "Staggered", the AI defenders would block a lot of those cheesy hotspot shots. If you're playing club matches with 2 AI defensemen, try this out and share your results."

Good to know.  I think the default strategy is staggered, but I'll cycle through and make sure it is on that in the future.

Anyone playing later tonight?  I just found out my exam on Wednesday has been pushed back a week, so with my daughter in daycare tomorrow, and me not having to study all freaking day, I wouldn't mind some NHL (after I get Rock Band out of my system).

Sorry I had to run after one game, but it was past my bed time already.  I thought we were doing some good things, though!  Better defense overall.  That go-ahead goal they got threaded the needle through like four dudes.  I need to get some practice time in against the CPU and get more comfortable with shooting.

Both Jake and I had some really bad lag in all of our games.  I hope this isn't the start of the same crap that happened last year to me at this time.

Anyone want to get a couple of games in tonight?

Guys, I'm gonna give notice that I'm outta the club game and the online game altogether.  It's just become an exploit-fest online.  It's all I see anymore and I'm not having any fun.  Gonna stick to playing a dynasty with my son.

Sorry to bail on you guys, but every online game has become a controller throwing experience.  Not how I want to spend my entertainment time.

Really!?  Wow, that's sad to hear.  I played NBA Live online last night and while there's no sign of exploits, there's no real BAP mode and it's basically impossible to play any kind of defense in the game (even though the offline game sort of impressed me).  So all around this OTP stuff seems to be coming up a bit short.  I'm still looking forward to FIFA as my time online with the DSP guys in '08 was pretty awesome all around.

That's a shame. Let see if a patch addresses any of these exploits. We can always play "old fashion", one-on-one games.

Well, NBA Live OTP pretty much sucks, with people bailing mid-game left and right.  Back to Gamefly!

I'm going to keep trying with NHL for a while, as even random OTP seems to yield pretty good results, often with less cheesing than in the club games.  And I'll play a bit more EASHL with the DSP team until the torrent of new game releases forces me to send it back to Gamefly.

Ted - Fazeo is playing this now.  Could you send him an invite to play for the SGN team, or is that something I can do?

I'll get on there and send him an invite and also make you a GM so you can invite anyone you want.  If you guys start playing regularly please post the times you figure to be on.  I think I can bear to try and play it now and again.  I enjoyed our few game, Grambo.

Edit:  He'll need to have created a BAP for me to send an invite I think.

Fazeo,

I'll see if I can figure out how to send an invite to the SGN team tonight.

Anyone interested in a regular one-on-one game this week?

Ok good to know. I haven't had much time lately on the 360, my gf has been playing the heck out of Viva Pinata 2 over the weekend and what lil time I've had on it I've spent on trying to finish up Saint's Row 2.

I'll look for it next time I pop in NHL 09 which hopefully will be tonight or tomorrow.

The invite system is convoluted to say the least.  Look for it in your player hub, which is buried somewhere in the menus.

We should set something up.  Unfortunately, the last three times I tried to extend my BAP character, I got the DDE like Jason did.
