I'm jonesing for some online racing.  Anyone else?

I know a bunch of us have Nascar, but I'd consider other options too if folks have other games.

PGR? GRID? Anything else?  I don't have PGR4 but I'll pick it up if it'll get folks racing again.

Maybe Wed night or sooner?

I don't have Grid anymore, but I have PGR4 and Nascar.  PGR is a better party game IMHO - I have a few non-SGN buds who would love to play if you wanted to fill a room (plus there is Fazeo, of course).

Anyone have Burnout Paradise?  That is probably the best driving game out there right now.

Yup, I've kept Burnout Paradise around.  Really, really well made, and the support post-release has been exceptional, but I've never once tried it online.  I've raced against some of the road rules times you and Web have put up, and that's about it.

I don't have anything apart from Stuntman Ignition at the minute, though I could probably be persuaded to pick up PGR again (again, again, again as it happens...) if it was likely to have any kind of medium-term mileage.

Yes, the post-release support has been fantastic - two major additions that they could have charged for, but gave out for nothing.

The online play is fantastic Adam.  There are challenges you can do as a group depending on how many are in the room - 2-8.  Most of them involve everybody meeting up somewhere on the map and then doing tricks simultaneously ..... hard to explain unless you are playing it, but that mode has the best replay value of any.  Maybe we can get a room going - I know over a dozen people who would love to start playing this on a casual basis.

I just purchased Paradise this weekend, actually.  I had it for a long rental when it first came out, but only grabbed it to own now that it is very inexpensive.  I was looking for a bit more 'standard' racing when I started this thread, but I'd be happy to play in some online Paradise sessions too.

There are some "standard-like" races in this one, but not like what I think you are saying.  Trust me, this is a great game to play with friends who have a sense of humor.  There are some wild moments in it.  Glad you got it Derek!  Now for peer pressure on the rest!

Oy, I just got rid of it... no one I knew seemed to play online, and once I finished my 'A' license, everything beyond that seemed like drudgery.  Poor timing!

I played PGR 3 & 4.  I have to say both were excellent games.  Both games do a nice job of rewarding precise driving and knowing how a car reacts without bogging the game down in simulation.

Personally I am waiting for Forza 3 or Gran Turismo 5.  I would pick up PGR 4 again after watching from the sidelines and seeing if interest was genuine and sustained.

I used to race PGR 4 with some guys that had an interesting league structure.  They would do four or five races in one night and mix up the events.  Some events were solo racing and some were team racing.  It would start with a solo race, followed by a team event, etc until the night was concluded.  All team events were based on current standings to try and balance it out.

It was fun, it usually ended up being pretty balanced on the final scoreboards, and even guys that weren't exceptional at the game enjoyed themselves, especially in the team racing events.

Slumber, that's when I returned my Gamefly'd copy as well, way back when.  In the Feb 6 update though, they are finally adding a 'restart' option, so you can tackle the remaining challenges (like the car-specific burning routes) without all the constant driving to retry.

I agree with you completely, though, that at that point the 1P was more work than fun.

Did any of you lot ever give Forza 2 a go online?  I seem to recall Web might have...Zeppo had a regular race night with that at DSP for a while and it was a blast, though it's probably a little bit too serious for the needs of this thread, and the tracks pale in comparison with PGR4 in both quantity and design.

Is there any car/setup tinkering with PGR 4?  That's when I get lost in racing games.  If you're going to start doing som PGR nights I'd be willing to pick it up.  My racing wheel is very lonely.

I'll buy PGR as well if we'll get at least 4 guys willing to go at it for a while.

Heh, Adam, I'm not sure what exactly you recall with me and Forza 2 over at DSP, but I was looking to do some racing with it that was, as you put it, a 'little less serious' than what some of the regulars over there were doing, but that didn't end up..uh.. working out all that well. Ouch  I traded the game in pretty quickly after that.

I would definitely be up for something a bit lighter here.

Yes, that's...pretty much how I remember it.  Up until some of the frankly bizarre preening of the last week, that was one of the most peculiar episodes I'd ever seen there.

If we're committing to PGR4, I'm quite happy to go and pick it up again, issuing my standard 'no voice comms beyond a certain time' caveat.  I've done all the offline stuff but I have a lot of fun hotlapping, so I'll get some mileage even if online racing dies on its arse.

I have Forza as well, but it is one of those gearheads games.  They can be fun, but I really don't want to spend time tweaking my car - I just want to race.  I wish more people had the latest Flatout .... the demolition derbies in there are great.

Yes yes yes!  I've been saying that for a while on this board.

I just bought PGR4 today, so some of you should go out and buy Flatout!!!! $19.99

I don't know if they have the derbies in the Demo, Jason.  That's where it would be at online! :)

It's definitely an arcade racer, but 1p is not easy and multi-online would be lots of bash-em-up fun!

How about Wed 10pm for PGR?  I'm a complete n00b at 4, though.  I think I rented it for like two days when it first came out, but I don't know any of the cars or tracks or anything.

Flatout Ultimate Carnage.  It's pretty much $20 everywhere now.

Pretty good to very good reviews, too, if you are interested:

One of the fun (but disgusting) parts of the single player is the arena where you have challenges like bowling and basketball - you are basically on a drag strip and have to break at the right time, sending the driver through the windshield and hitting the targets.  The all-out balls-to-the-wall races are reminiscent of old-school Burnout games (point-to-point while inflicting carnage).  The demolition derbies are great fun.  I think the demo has one demo derby arena in it.

PGR2 was the best in the series (on the old xbox 180) - PGR4 is the next best.  3 was a step back IMHO.

If we can get 8 to a room, cat & mouse mode is a load of fun.

I will never, ever part with Flatout Ultimate Carnage.  For all that it has its flaws, I've played few games that have filled me with the same joy that one does.

I can be ready to go by next Thursday, but would miss out on this one by virtue of my not currently having a copy of PGR4...

Adam - if you want to play some Flatout sometime, I'm game!  This is a guilty pleasure of mine as well.  When I had Gamefly last year, I had a hard time giving it up, so when it went down in price, I got it used for next to nothing.  The career mode gets frustrating as you goes on, but this is one of those games that brings a smile to your face.

X-Plane 9... loving it.  I can't run it with terrible high graphics settings on my macbook, but getting familiar with the aircraft, exploring all the freeware planes and scenery, the sense of realism (I did a night flight  over Australia recently, and the sensation of looking out and seeing the lights far below, and the engine sounds, spookily convicing), it's quite addictive.  I actually just posted some questions for you in the flightsim hangar thread.  Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I played a bit of Flatout last night, good stuff.  Surprised to see that it's racing wheel compatible as well.  Can we give that a go?  Do I need to have a lot of cars unlocked to race effectively online?

Mount and Blade hasn't gotten enough time from me.  I'm still scratching the surface.

Yep, I had a great time with Flatout online last night, even with only 3.  With more I could see it being an absolute riot!

Derbies were a blast, and I like the races too, especially when we were rubbing enough to cause some serious damage. (Ted and Slumber both got the best of me there!)  Even the mini-games are decent for a change of pace.

I'd really love to make a Flatout night semi-regular for a while!

Glad to hear it plays well online Derek.  I am game for playing most nights this week.  Monday is the only night that is out for me (hockey league).

I've definitely been bitten by the racing bug lately.  Anyone up for running a few races tonight in anything?

I finally got my hands on Dirt2, and I'm hanging onto Shift, but I'm up for anything.

PGR4?  Flatout?  Nascar?

I can't make it until 11pm, but if 10pm works better for everyone, I'll just catch you all next time.

Guys, I just walked in the door from work so I probably won't make it. Sorry I couldn't post earlier but I was out of the office since 10am.

No need to apologize, Ted, especially for being ill!

Hope you are doing better today!
