could get me back on the 360 full time.

Man it's looking good and I'm pretty excited about the multiplayer aspects, especially free roaming with a gang.

As you might have guessed, I'm all over this.  I'm still mildly unclear as to how multiplayer works exactly, but just traversing the landscape in a rainstorm with a posse will probably be worth the price of admission.

Is this a sequel to the cowboy game you used to play a while ago (possibly on the original Xbox)?

Sequel in name only, Jason, as the gameplay has been greatly revised and expanded.  This one is more of a Grand Theft Auto in the old West.

probably Red Dead Revolver, but this is a very far evolution of that series.

I hope some of you guys are planning on exploring posse play.  Jake and I will look forward to joining up with whoever does.

I was up way too late and I barely touched multiplayer, but riding the west with a posse of pals seems like it could be loads of fun.  The actual shooting (unsurprisingly) reminds me of the GTAIV multiplayer.

Ted, definitely let me know when you guys will be on.

So far I am really enjoying 1p.

I'll give a report on multiplayer from Jake.

He just did free roam, but all by himself and didn't join any random players.  He said he has fought AI gangs (which I like) and didn't have to engage in player v player.  He died a bunch of times because he was all alone and it took him about 10 tries to take down an AI gang hideout.  He said he has also come across AI people wandering the landscape and has been attacked by cougars and killed and been killed by them.  His impression so far is very positive, but he says it really cries out for a formed posse and not a loner (which is expected).

Hope hope hope mine arrives tomorrow.

Yeah, Ted, Jake ended up in a room later in the evening with a bunch of DSP guys.  I had a really, really fun time in player vs player in a posse of friends, but the free roam stuff actually was a little surprisingly underwhelming, as it seems like shooting up hideouts and gunning down the wildlife could get a little old after not too long.  We did some of the hideouts with a big posse and they were actually pretty easy because of that.  Possibly there is a sweet spot of posse size to maximize enjoyment of those battles...maybe 3-4 guys.

Anyway, the movement of the characters is also a little clunky (GTA-style) but overall I'm enjoying the heck out of the vs multi and the 1p game.

Oops, sorry Jake! LOL  Jake wasn't in the DSP Posse (we had come from free-roam) so he was on the other side, usually as one of the highest scoring players.  Killed me a lot too, although I managed to hold my own once or twice.  Guy manages to be everywhere I am on these maps. AngryLOL

Derek,

Sorry I accepted and then bailed.  I thought maybe you couldn't get into our room and then I saw you were with all the DSP cats.  I already had a posse going with Jake, Bob, and an old friend from 1985 named Brad.  Didn't want to abandon them so I went back.  Hopefully we'll get a chance to play in the next few days.

So far I really like free roam quite a bit more than the standard deathmatch stuff.  That's really my preferred gaming style now...to co-op with guys and just hang out and have fun taking down AI.  We played all the modes and while I did have some fun in the mutiplayer games, I had the most fun in free roam.  I think Brad and Bob agreed with me, but I think Jake slightly prefers the multiplayer matchups.

Jason, looking forward to your copy arriving.

It really is for a guys like me and Bob.  We're just really sick of the 13-30 everybody calling everybody else a "fag" or "bitch" every time they shoot someone or get shot by someone crowd.  The other problem in the public free roam, and this might just be because the game is new, is that you can't really free roam and find a posse because everyone is just shooting everyone dead as soon as they spawn in.  Private free roam with buddies is where it's at for me right now.

I got a chance to play the single-player game for a bit tonight while a local storm wrecked havoc with my internet connection. I may not be the best judge of the game's graphics since I mostly play sports and racing games, but damn do they look good. Rockstar has done an impressive job of creating a living world too - it's amazing how everything and everyone reacts to your presence.

My wife was little surprised to see me this playing this and said "I can't believe you bought this type of game", but I have to say that I'm enjoying it so far. I'm sure it will be even more fun once I finally get online with it (hopefully tomorrow or Saturday night).

Title update coming next week:

"We are aware that there are still some of you out there experiencing issues with Red Dead Redemption, including multiplayer connectivity and getting the Mo Van Barr bounty. We are currently testing a Red Dead Redemption title update for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 that aims to fix these and other items. Due to the unpredictable nature of the testing and console manufacturer submission process, we cannot pin down a very specific date and time, but we do expect this to be released for download for both systems by the end of next week. We can assure you we are working with our partners at Microsoft and Sony to make this title update available literally as soon as possible."

Free Outlaws to the End DLC for Red Dead Redemption

Rockstar has already given us one of the best games of the year, but given that wide-open world, there are any numbers of ways to expand...

So now, the developer has announced the upcoming "Outlaws to the End Co-Op Mission Pack" for their destined award-winner; the expansion DLC will be available on June 22 on both the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace. Featuring a total of six new co-op missions along with fresh co-op challenges, bonus multiplayer XP rewards, and plenty of chances to unlock more Trophies and Achievements, this is great for all you RDR fans. Up to four players can indulge in the extra goodness and oh yeah, did we happen to mention that it's free? That's right, the Outlaws to the End Mission Pack won't cost you a dime, which is good news for all those who have already spent a pretty penny on other DLC in 2010. New content for big games is always popular - even if it does cost a bit of money - primarily because the fans don't want their excellent experiences to end. Red Dead Redemption already presents gamers with a ton of stuff to do (you could easily spend 100 hours with this one) but at some point, we could always use new stuff.

I'm barely into Mexico myself, so we're about in the same place.

After a flurry of love for the multiplayer and the feel of the game environment, I'm finding that the game is grabbing me a lot less than I thought it would, as I'm only playing sporadically.  After the series of missions for the marshal, the other 'running errands for lowlifes' section of the first area was a little too close to the typical GTA IV formula for me...I thought this game was going to avoid that same feeling.

I'm also not really into the environmental challenges like the hunting and flower-picking.

I'm hoping the feel of things gets a little better in Mexico.

The 'errands for assholes' section right before Mexico is a real low-point.  Mexico is beautiful but has some more unsavory stuff as well... I even had one of those "I might not ever play this again" moments.  But then I started mixing in the ambient challenges and for some reason things got way better.

This game is a weird mix of 'towering achievement' and 'will Rockstar never learn?' though... Right now I'm heavily on the 'towering achivement' side of things, but that could easily change, depending on what inexplicable thing they make my Marston do next.

I wouldn't steer anyone away from them, as I played through all of GTA IV and both expansions, but the controls are so much more responsive in RDR, I'd have trouble going back.

I think one of the reasons I'm enjoying RDR and could never get into GTA 3 and Vice City is because I find the John Marston character to be interesting - the amazing graphics and fun horse riding also help. I'm trying to play the game as a "good guy" and don't kill random people and try to help out as many people in need as possible. I'm kind of surprised that I like the game so much since I've never been a cowboy or "old west" fan.

This is definitely harder to do in the GTA games.

you weren't kidding around.  Did you do much of the side quests?  Do you think you'll play through again?

I did a decent amount of side quest and plan on doing the rest now that the main story is done. I want to see how much the game can hold my interest with the main storyline complete. If it gets boring, I may play through again and be a little less honest this time around.

I have to say that I found the John Marston character to be very interesting and felt a connection to him during the game. Great job Rockstar. I can't wait until you guys finish the game so we can discuss the ending.

Just found out that there's a secret ending. Looks like I have one more mission to complete Thumbs Up.

Well I caved in and bought it.  This and a copy of Alan Wake.  Local store had 20% off your purchase this week and I was, well weak. Embarrassed

The new co-op missions are much much better than what shipped with the game.  They're harder and force teamwork and cooperation.

If you would not die every 5 minutes, I might have some time to pull off a round or two, instead of having to jar a needle in your back.
