IGN is reporting that Gran Turismo 4 will ship before the holidays but lose its online play. What a shame as this was a MAJOR selling point for me.
http://ps2.ign.com/articles/550/550786p1.html
The article states that SCE plans on releasing an online-compatible version of the game in the future. If they are serious about that, then they should just delay GT4 (again) and release it when the online mode is ready unless they plan on giving away the online version or making it some type of inexpensive expansion pack.
I doubt an online version will appear on the PS2 since work has begun on GT5 for the PS3. This news is really going to be taken badly by PS2 owners. It doesn't really matter to me because while I was going to buy GT4, I wasn't holding my breath for it either.
SCE probably forced Polyphony Digital to release it for the holiday season. Don't forget, GT4 was supposed to ship for the holidays last year and was delayed. Sony does not want GT4 to miss another holiday season no matter what it involves.
While the game will sell a ton of copies, there is going to be alot of negative feelings towards the GT franchise because of this move (People still complain about TimeSplitters shipping without an online mode). It doesn't help that Polyphony Digital has been hyping the online features for the past six months as being revolutionary and now they just drop the entire mode.
